Late Night With The Devil - The Most Interesting Horror Film in Years
Фильм және анимация
Late Night With The Devil is an extremely fascinating horror film, and it one of my favourites in recent memory. Today, I attempt a narrated video essay where I break the film down!
All my ratings are based on a 'thumbs up/thumbs down' list. Here they are below.
Thumbs down:
1: F*****g Terrible (Really bad)
2: Snoozefest (Dull, uninteresting, unmemorable)
Thumbs half up/down:
3: Know who you are (It may only appeal to a small portion of the audience)
4: With a little help from some 'friends' (Either watch with some friends.... or watch drunk)
Thumbs Up:
5: Worth a watch (Check it out on streaming)
6: Buy it (Watch in the cinema, or purchase the physical release)
7: Top Notch (As good as it gets)

If you like this, may I suggest an obscure old BBC Halloween special called "Ghostwatch". It is set in the UK in nearly the same era as this movie and is framed as real paranormal investigation show that goes horribly wrong. It even used real BBC snews commentators and presenters for versimilitude and was so effective it created a War of the Worlds style panic across the country as people thought it was real. Due to the legal fallout of the resulting panic, the show never got a proper release but if you hunt around on-line, you should be able to find it. P.S. if you watch it, always look in the background.

I'm a massive horror fan, and I don't know what everyone else was smoking. This movie freaked me the fuck out too haha.
David Dastmalchian was born for this role. This is what I’d consider a career defining performance. However, I was incredibly confused on their choice of "demonic entity". If they'd done a little research they'd have found that Ipos wouldve made much more sense than Abraxas.
I loved how it switched from "found footage" to " movie footage" in between breaks. Im assuming these black and white sections are not part of the docu as the video quality is way too modern for that. Love how it shows the neglect of the guests and the situation they gradually put themselves in as they progress the show. Even my gf loved this movie despite the fact that the generally only likes the more gory horror movies. Really well done movie and I can't wait to see what these guys do next
@GetFramed

I personally believe they didn’t have the budget to create ads in the breaks so they decided to say they found unseen behind the scenes footage. It stretches a bit of credibility maybe, but it doesn’t bother me one bit. Glad you and your gf liked it!
KZread recommended this video out of the blue. Your first few sentences encouraged me to pause and go find it. David Dastmalchian being the star sealed the deal, I had to see it. Now I'm back and really enjoyed your video essay on it. The only thing I don't think you touched on was Lilly saying she knows Jack from the tall trees (the Grove). There were hints earlier that the Abraxus cult were charged with kidnappings. I did wonder if Lilly was part of the Grove's creepy gatherings, facilitated by the cult's human trafficking services, and that her inner demon remembers what she's blocked out. Those are the dark places my mind went anyway. It might have just been the demon saying he knows Jack was at the Grove gatherings. You watched 3 times? Does Lilly in her human form also mention Jack in the tall trees?
@GetFramed
Ай бұрын
Awesome that you watched the film and came back to this, glad you enjoyed hearing my perspective on it. From my interpretation, Lilly herself never said anything about Jack at the ‘tall trees’, that was all the demon that was inside of her (Abraxas). Lilly says some creepy things (‘you’re going to be very famous after tonight Jack’), but I don’t believe that Lilly mentioned the Grove herself. Interesting ideas though, that does certainly give food for thought! Such an interesting film and the kidnapping stuff went straight over my head. Maybe a fourth watch will bring new things into light!

While people have been bringing up "Ghostwatch" (which is true) it also reminds me just a bit of a movie called "Noroi the Curse" a Japanese film, which has a somewhat similar narrative device, not of being a tv episode, but like a documentary, which also looks very much like an actual documentary from the time. First, I enjoyed your video. If this video is your first time at this format, I would say your future is good. And I’d say your interpretation is not one I’d previously thought of, for a reason that I’ll get into in a moment, but it’s a good one, and I’ll have to see the movie again after I’ve given it a good pause. Spoilers, naturally, will follow. What bothered and distracted me-even though I really enjoyed the movie-about _Late Night With The Devil_ is that it seemingly broke its rule: what we are about to see is the footage interlaced with backstage documentary of the episode. And why wouldn’t Jack Delroy want behind-the-scenes footage of what would likely be his most infamous episode? He seems like that kind of guy. But we get a set piece that seemingly breaks the footage rule. Go ahead and laugh, but I stayed awake for two hours trying to come up with the solution. Then one hit me, and it made the film that much creepier. At one point in the movie, a character is hypnotized with a lot of fanfare, and we see the entire hypnotism set-up before we are treated to a scene with worms, nasty and monstrous, wriggle out of the body of the primary subject in a gross horrifying way. (Tangent: the demon is called “Mr. Wriggles,” by Lilly, and there seems to be a fair amount of phallic imagery, like really big worms, throughout the movie-more details pointing to Jack’s use and abuse of women?) After the tape is rewound to where the subject believes he’s pulling worms from his body and worms start bursting out, we see no worms, just a guy acting like he’s being attacked from the inside by wriggling creeps. It turns out our magician/hypnotist has hypnotized nearly _everyone_ watching. Why we don’t see worms on replay is that we didn’t see the magician’s prep work, or build up, into his act of mass hypnotism. Later, Abraxas manifests itself in the body of the girl. Lots of really bad things happen. But the weirdest and I think, most frightening thing is that we, the viewers, were _hypnotized a second time._ This accounts for the breaking of the footage rule. I think we cease to see view footage (until the end) just before Jack believes he forces his way backstage. I imagine we were hypnotized by Abraxas, but I also wonder if it wasn’t Jack’s psychic scream as he sees the Hell that awaits him. Maybe it’s both. I don’t think it’s ever clear. And having squared that circle in my mind, I feel a bit more satisfied, but I’ll watch the movie again as I think your ritual completion angle has a lot of merit.
@GetFramed

Enjoyed your essay, and I really enjoyed this film. One I'll enjoy repeat viewings of for many years to come, i think. I knew he was being shown a super dark version of his show at the end, but it never occurred to me that it was Abraxis giving him a quick taste of what Hell would be like after he dies. It's an interesting theory and it makes a lot of sense. But it was pretty clear his soul was damned. I had mostly thought of it as an elaborate trick to get him to sacrifice the girl who got away from fulfilling her role in the cult. I thought that maybe even the intention was to have Jack sacrifice Lily in the end all along because even after his wife died he never got those ratings. So they use that first "sacrifice" as part of the plan to trick him into doing the second one. Crazy devious. Oh btw, I'd call this a mixed medium film. Definitely not pure found footage, which, apparently i like better than you. I thought a couple of the Paranormal Activity sequels were pretty good. 😂

the movie's great but the fact they used AI art for intermission messages sucks

@@tawrelineI think that there’s a couple of things that need to be said regarding the AI art. Firstly, the film was shot and edited in 2022, well before the SAG-AFTRA strikes. Had it been made after or during those strikes, I don’t think they would’ve experimented with it. Secondly, the negative response that this film has gotten will probably ensure that no one else will ever use AI art again, which is a good thing. Thirdly, the film isn’t good for that intermission message. It’s a minuscule part of the film that wasn’t done with any bad intentions, it was just being used as a resource. Fourthly, the film had a very small production crew. Here’s a quote from Colin Cairnes, one of the directors of the film. “Our producers also happened to be our VFX artists and graphic designers. That’s how small and tight that, you know, our little family is. I mean, this is like hard labor from a very small team with limited resources. So I don’t know. It’d be nice if people just understood some of that context”. -Colin Cairnes Sure it probably wasn’t the best idea to use AI as a template for the interstitial, but the directors admitted to it, explained exactly how it was used and said that they won't be utilising it in future. I just hope we can now all enjoy the film for what it is, because I think after the discussion this film caused on the ethical nature of AI in film, everyone’s on the same page with the use of AI, including the filmmakers. Long comment, sorry, but I find it to be a real shame that such a great film has been seriously hindered for some people over one mistake.

Dune 2 used AI to create the blue color in the actors eyes, no one really cared. A small film with 90% lower budget uses it save money and spend it where it’s used more efficiently, film gets shit on.
This was the craziest damn horror movie i think i have ever seen
Did … did Jack make a deal with Stolas?

Sorry I didn’t get that reference. Had to look it up haha
I thought it was an excellent video, and it didn’t feel like your first self narrated one. I very much enjoyed it, but I need to watch it again , because I didn’t think her cancer was something he had to sacrifice, or was supernaturally caused. I thought it was just part of becoming famous, successful, etc. and how he got far less time with his wife, even after she was ill. The moments that she appears, or things related to her, are making him feel the guilt, are more of his ultimate payment. He does become successful, snd in that world, he may behave men one of the famous people ever. He may have started the end of the world. 😄 I think the main message, is just that the television, and now these phones being far worse, as far as how long people are looking at them, investing time, is all a metaphor for how we’re already possessed. Can we get the demon exorcised, or can one control it, and limit how much they use it, that isn’t specifically, to make one’s living, or any other examples, such as how the tech can help the deaf and the blind.

Thank you very much! That's a really good point that you make about it being the end of the world, especially with the phones, as we are always looking at screens. If the devil travels through screens, then he may reach us all! And the idea that we're all possessed is very interesting too, I didn't think of it that way, thanks for sharing another perspective. As for Madeleine's cancer, I am pretty sure that the cancer was supernaturally imposed on her. She contracted terminal lung cancer, despite never being a smoker. It'd be like someone dying from alcohol poisoning even though they don't drink. But it works your way too, that she was secondary in his life and she faded away as he chased fame and fortune.

@@CorbCorbin Thanks so much! I hope you like my other content! Also I can’t remember the exact line of dialogue, but there is a scene near the end where Madeleines ghost confronts Jack and says something like ‘how did you manage to forget this Jack?’ referring to his deal and his inability to connect her cancer with his sacrifice. Let me know what you think once you’re finished!

Found footage you need to watch if that's your opinion of found footage: Lake Mungo, Hell House LLC, As Above So Below, Deadstream... Can anyone else think of good suggestions? I feel like the genre is easily dismissed but there's some real gems. Also, the constraints tend to produce really original ideas

The only one of these I’ve seen is As Above So Below and it’s one of my favourite found footages! I have a review on it actually so do check that out! I also love Cloverfield, but I’ll put those other ones on my radar!

Horror in the high desert is pretty good. The first one sets up a mystery, the payoff is kinda weak tho. The 2nd movie adds to it a bit but mostly shows that what happened in the first movie, happened many times more. And there's a 3rd one coming, promising the actual payoff to the mystery. And ngl, these movies were good enough as a build up for a potential great experience for the last movie. Rec is also really good if you enjoy a more chaotic movie. Dashcam, but as a warning i have to tell you how annoying the main character is. But the things that happen and the actual horror going on is pretty cool. The main character just drags everything down, as she can't shut her mouth and is the typical COVID denying twat that harasses people on stream for money. Even during the cool horror moments she doesn't shut up. And speaking about hell house. The Carmichael manor is probably my favourite of all these movies. Its far better then any other hell house movie imo. And now one movie i wanna steer everyone away from even tho there's some people who like it for some reason. The outwaters. It has some interesting ideas, but the characters are all a bunch of dumb pretentious twats. 70% of the movie takes place in complete darkness, with a main character/camera man who's holding a wide range flashlight, a high quality one. Even showing off he can basically light everything off. Only to proceed and only use the long range mode on it. Meaning you can only see glimpses of what's going on. The ending is bonkers tho and I didn't see it coming at all. But it's not worth 90 minutes of your life only to get a glimpse of a potentially good concept and an ending where some unlikable twat cuts his own dick off for some reason.

To be fair, Lake Mungo is less Found Footage and more Fictional Documentary. Still an absolutely phenomenal and haunting film. That ending stayed with me for months, just thinking about the tragic implications and imagining how absolutely horrible going through that would be. While not necessarily a typical horror movie, it is absolutely terrifying and filled me with dread in ways that slashers or monsters never have.
