The Man With The Target on His Chest
In this serial killer documentary, take a look through the events of the Zodiac Killer - a prolific serial killer who terrorized the San Francisco area in the late 1960s.
On the 20th of December 1968, at a turnoff on Lake Herman Road, Benicia, a mysterious man would claim the lives of two teenagers. Unbeknownst to the investigators at the time, within the next year, this would be the start of one of the most infamous unsolved mysteries in the realm of serial killers.

Hey everyone, Over the last few days, a lot of new eyes have seen this video, and I am endlessly grateful. As a result, I have seen a few comments regarding future content, so I just want to give anyone new an update on that: I am working on a new video, and I hope to release it later this year, but this is unfortunately not a full-time job, and I am in my first year of a Science Degree that has been taking up a lot of my time. You can check out my community posts for a record of what I have been doing since this video released about a year and a half ago. Thank you all for supporting the channel. The dream of going full time is always burning, and the support is just fuel to that fire.

@@banditoyt Your research is also SO thorough; I've watched a great many documentaries on this subject, and the this is the first time I've heard some of that info you gleaned from the very early police reports. I'm almost certain I've never heard anything about "Peggy" the witness, the mysterious "George," nor that one of the early victims had told a babysitter she'd been threatened previously. I've also never heard that anyone specifically described the attacker as not wearing glasses, or that 3 women reported a suspicious man loitering around before the lake Berryessa (sp?) attacks. Even the professionally produced TV documentaries never mentioned any of the above. Also, FWIW, "The Most Dangerous Game" was one of my dad's favorite stories as a kid, and according to him it was required reading for many students in the 1930s-40s. This is definitely one of those supremely disturbing cases, considering the fact that the killer was never caught. I know the likelihood is that he's no longer alive, which almost makes this more creepy. Just the thought that he COULD technically somehow still be out there, walking free...ooh, it gives me chills!

You have done such a great job here... Hats off to you man... I also can not see anyone but Zodiac being Arthur Leigh Allen... I have my reasons and my thoughts. Your first run at ALA is pretty bang on... The Stine witness by that I believe you mean the 3 kids, Fouke and Zelms. Now, they said it was a black guy and if I had to guess (and it's just a guess) that Zodiac called into the cab co and said there was a black man attacking the driver, just my guess. As for the kids, I think they were too far away to get a good look at him and I believe the same with Fouke and Zelms, they were not close enough to get a really good look at him and it's only after they realize they were looking for a white man did they try to remember what he looked like. The one thing I believe they got right is the nose... As for prints, I don't think he ever left any... As for DNA, it's known he had other people lick his stamps for him... And most recently they tested his stamps to someone else and it was a match but it was said, he was not the Zodiac, not sure what to make of that yet but this came from Tom Voigt... Worth a look. As of the glasses, I believe he totally used them when he did his thing, along with a wig, which I am pretty sure he used when he was killing. As for ambidextrous, totally seemed like he was faking it cause everyone who knew him, said he would right with both hands and said Leigh didn't have a preference for either his left or right hand... The last time they saw him, before he died, they found quite a bit of evidence, bombs, his typewriter, etc. In any case, you did great man and I'm so happy you see something here, I do as well. Great work!!!

Thank you for the kind words. The Zodiac case is quite intriguing and quite special. I have read comments both here, and on Reddit, and it's fascinating to see how many theories and suspects there really are. In the video I chose to focus on my personal prefered suspect, and two more "obscure" ones. But ultimately, the goal of the video was not to make anyone agree with my conclussion, but instead to present the facts, give some personal insight, and allow the viewer to be inspired to form their own conclusions, or to do their own research. So it is motivating seeing so many, including yourself, throw out your own prefered suspects and theories. Absolutely love it.

A strange case, you have a killer who lets two of his victims survive and another live for two days before succumbing, lets one escape completely and uses a .22. One who doesn't wear a mask to kill, but then decides to for the third killing. But not any old mask..... He has a gun but decides to stab, which he obviously wasn't very good at. Kills very/ young couples and threatens school kids....but then kills a cab driver. He definitely had more energy for killing the females and it seems he almost killed the male through necessity. also.... he goes to a killing scene wearing a mask and glasses ( disguise), then doesn't kill either of them before leaving them for dead... so the victims can give a description of him. It's almost like he wanted them to survive .To me this suggests a man who was out of luck with the ladies at high school, didn't fit in at school and wanted to hurt the world like it had hurt him. I could also see it being like th ABC point story where perhaps Darlene is the target . He may well have been murder for hire, at least to an extent, but also liked doing it.

Much appreciated. Hopefully I can keep improving from here on out.
This is surprisingly good for how small your channel is. Kind of reminds me of Lemmino. Edit: I mean that as a compliment

No worries, I took it as such. And I do appreciate it. LEMMiNO was the inspiration behind this entire video and the channel, so the comparison is a massive compliment. Thank you.
Wow! This is very well done! And even contained information I didn't know about despite being interested in this case for yours! I'm convinced Arthur isn't the Zodiac Killer, personally. And I thought that the driver had threatened to kill the woman and throw her baby out the window? Either way, great video, you earned a subscriber!

Thank you. I appreciate it. My first time warching the Zldiac movie was after doing research for this video, and I found it interesting that they had the driver threaten Johns. Probably just for dramatic effect.

@@banditoyt I see, but I heard it from other sources as well. The lack of consistency about this case in my eyes is as fascinating as it is frustrating.

Completely agree with you. This video was shared on the Zodiac Killer subreddit, and even there people had misconceptions, at least, that is in regards to my research. Most of my research was done using the police reports from the cases, and I have noticed many of the disputed facts are in cases where the noted person, or someone close to them, disputed it after the fact. So when even the involved people are somewhat changing their stories, getting the correct one is difficult.
Amazing work!
Very well made video, thank you for posting it

Thank you for watching it.
This is an excellent video, probably the best rundown of the probative evidence in the case I've seen. It was probably a wise decision to keep the discussion over the ciphers to a minimum, as well as the various literary references (real or imagined) that appear in his letters. From what I've seen, those topics tend to invite a lot of extraneous speculation that goes nowhere and makes an otherwise fairly straightforward canon of crimes needlessly complicated. There has never been new _real_ evidence that has come from that line of inquiry. I know that it's out of LEMMINO's bag of tricks, but rendering the layout of the crime scenes and the locations of witnesses is an excellent edition that I have not seen done well in any other documentary and that alone, in my opinion, would make me recommend this video first to anyone interested in the case. There are only a few things I would say could have been useful inclusions (not that you're remaking this just because some genius writes a comment). First, a clearer overview of the neighborhood of Pacific Heights and the immediate area around Washington and Cherry, up to the Presidio (the area of the Stine murder), as well as the cab route that Stine took, beginning I believe at the downtown theater district. I think it's sort of important to understand that since you bring up where Lawrence Kane was living at the time and that it was relatively close to the pick-up point. Of note, it was A) a major population center that was the central hub of the entire region, so a lot of people lived there and B) the killer departed the scene heading north and away from central SF towards the Golden Gate bridge, and that's also the direction of all the other canonical crimes. Whether he actually left SF or stayed in the Presidio is an open question, but I do believe that whole area was searched with dogs that night, so it's not a trivial point when we're trying to geo-locate the killer. Second, if I remember correctly, there are some nagging issues with Kathleen John's story that get lost in the mythology. I am not well read on that story but I'm aware of some of the controversy, so I'm relying on Richard Grinnell's website. I don't think there were any witnesses of her abandoned car prior to it being set on fire, and she appears to have given some conflicting reports about the timeline of that day if you include Graysmith's book (obviously could be a classic Graysmith problem of course). I think she also said that the people who rescued her from a vineyard next to a highway offramp just dropped her off at the police station so she went in by herself. I'm not sure these people were identified and I don't think she could remember their names, only that they were from Missouri, so unless I'm mistaken there aren't any statements from them, although I'm happy to be proven wrong on that point. Finally, whereas we have two separate witnesses who heard Zodiac's voice and described it in fairly specific detail (Hartnell and Nancy Slover) here you have someone who spends 2 hours in a car with the guy who is clearly having a conversation with her since he "evades and changes the subject" and yet I don't think she ever managed to describe his voice much less anything specific he talked about. Add to that the letter from Zodiac describing this event (like with Cheri Jo Bates) was completely without detail that couldn't have easily been sourced from the paper. It's still ambiguous and could go either way, but when you compare the amount of effort and _planning_ that he put into proving he was the perpetrator of Lake Herman Rd., Blue Rock Springs, Presidio Heights and (at the scene) Lake Berryessa, it is very much an outlier and deserves some serious skepticism. Exactly the same for Donna Lass, and exactly the same for Cheri Jo Bates. This is why the letters are as much a curse as they are important pieces of evidence; they are full of bullshit as well as the truth. circumstantial

Thank you for the compliments, and thank you even more for the criticism. You make a great point about how I presented the Stine case in relation to location and the implications thereof. Adding the route would not have been a major inclusion at first sight, but I do think it would have added value for the viewer. The Johns case was also one of the harder cases since details surrounding it are both scarce and somewhat contradictory. Most of the information in that particular case came from a newspaper article.

@@banditoyt I've got a lot of respect for the person who eschews the mythmaking impulse of True Crime. There were multiple times I was watching this video waiting for you to bring up things like the phone call to the dispatcher Nancy Slover, and the way the dude said, "goodbye", which are completely useless from an evidentiary standpoint, and frankly pretty cringe, in order to make the case seem creepier than it is, and you never did that so I knew I was watching something serious. I am subscribed and eagerly looking forward to more content that takes that approach.

The goal of the video was always to pack as much useful information into an as compact video as possible, so minor details such as the exact tone Zodiac used in his phone calls was somewhat irrelevant to me. This is also the reason I chose to cut the call to the TV Show. It makes for quite the dramatic scene, but ultimately, it does not add much more than that. Hopefully I can only improve from here on out and produce even better content in the coming months. And if all goes well, I might even be able to do this as a full time job eventually, which is the dream.
