To me, the creepiest part was when Lilly was staring at the camera when she was first brought out on stage. It seemed like the demon was in control of her the whole time, it was just putting on an act.

Possibly. I think he is meant to be an unknown that the viewer can fill in. Is it possible he's just a guy in a costume? Perhaps, the audience will never know for sure. Interesting to wonder - when the crowd disperses, what does the skeleton do? I don't know if it's shown what exactly he does. Does he run away, or maybe he just walks.
Dastmalchian confirmed in an interview that Jack absolutely did not know he would be sacrificing his wife. It likely just seemed like a weird silly ritual to Jack, something he had to do to fit in with the powerful people who could help his career. Jack won’t get charged for murder because the footage shows the demon killing everyone. All the people who ran out would confirm a demon started killing people. And we see how he was hallucinating towards the end. Dastmalchian said he’d likely be in a mental institution. I think Minnie was absolutely trying to help Jack. That’s why she was trying to communicate through Christou. Christou said “you have to accept”. And Jack didn’t. When Carmichael told Christou to channel Minnie again, he began vomiting. That was the demon ensuring that that Minnie wouldn’t be able to help Jack. So all she could do is just stay near him with her hand on his shoulder, helpless to stop what’s going to happen.

I have a theory, of course it happened the demon killed everyone but since all happened as what the elite wanted they could hide and make like Jack was crazy and killed them all. I mean they have a ton of money they could hire people to pretend it happened or pay the survivors that it not happened. At the end Jack would likely be in a mental institution

@@karolina285 Yeah the filmmakers wanted to keep a lot of things ambiguous but I saw Jack as a genuinely good hearted person who loved his wife. And Dastmalchian said that’s how he played him and that Jack wouldn’t have sacrificed Minnie. The other thing worth thinking about is whether Jack really sacrificed Minnie at all. Can a person just sacrifice another person if that other person hasn’t made a deal? If that’s the case, then the demon can just kill anyone. And if the demon can kill anyone, why wouldn’t he just take over the world? I don’t think Minnie was sacrificed (knowingly or unknowingly). I think Jack feared that he caused her death. And the demon picked up on that and used it against him. As June said, demons love to confuse people.

@@marioargiropoulos7555 ooh, that reminds me of a comment someone made under one of the videos about this movie. That he thinks that Jack made a deal (probably thinking it's some silly "welcome to the club" things) at the Grove but didn't do what he promised on his end (again, thinking it wasn't serious). And that's why he's wife died of cancer as a punishment.

@@karolina285 Yeah there are tons of possibilities due to the intentional ambiguity. Personally I prefer thinking Minnie’s cancer was purely incidental and Jacks fear of causing it was used against him. I don’t like the idea that a demon could give cancer to someone they’ve had no contact with simply because of the actions of a loved one. Another interesting thing to think about is June. It was weird that the demon was so distressed when it found itself restrained. Almost like the demon was the victim. June says “What is your mission?”, and the demon immediately calms down and says “He’s here. Isn’t he?” I think the demon acted way weaker than he really was. I mean look what he was able to do at the end. Yet he was distressed by restraints? We see that June’s chants suddenly don’t work anymore either. I think June got played in order to get Lilly on the show. Perhaps she made a deal with the demon as well. Maybe to make Jack fall in love with her 🤷♂️

Watched this movie last night and was impressed by the cinematography and casting. The historical context was great too. As someone who prefers backstory and suspension of disbelief over jump scares and gore, it was the right movie for me. I'm tired of Hollywood's tendency to overuse dark environments and slow, panning/zooming shots for scary scenes. The only thing I wish had been improved was the pacing of the ending. The killings happened to abruptly that I had not time to soak in the horror of it all.

@marioargiropoulos7555

@@NachoAvDad It really is a fascinating movie exactly because there are so many possible interpretations. I feel it’s even better after rewatching it. Personally, I see the whole movie as a fight for Jack’s soul, fought between Abraxas (who represents money and fame and power) and Minnie (who represents Love). Minnie tried speaking through Christou, but Jack wouldn’t accept. When Car offered Christou money to channel Minnie again, Abraxas immediately made him vomit and then killed him. That’s how threatened Abraxas was by Minnie. So she then started showing up on the monitors, creating the loud feedback and shattering glass, and eventually right behind him with her hand on his shoulder. Jack had one final chance to do the right thing when it was time to go to the jazz singer. Earlier in the show he said they will absolutely not bump the jazz singer. It’s likely they had bumped her before, which was very common for live late night talk shows since musical guests always come on last. Had he kept his word and gone to the jazz singer, everything would have been fine. But in that moment he decides to continue on with Abraxas. Because he knows that would get better ratings. And that seals his fate. I believe the final sick Minnie Jack stabs was just Abraxas fooling Jack into stabbing Lilly. I think that’s what Minnie was trying to warn him about the whole time.
There's also the line Carmichael says after Christou spews on his coat ("That coat was a personal gift from Charles Laughton!") that codes Carmichael as gay, which is another characteristic that James Randi shared with Carmichael. Randi came out as gay in 2010 when he was 82, but he would have been deeply in the closet in the 1970s. Charles Laughton was a British character actor who appeared in a lot of classic Hollywood movies, but although he was nominally married to the actress Elsa Lanchester, he was secretly gay. Another factor linking Carmichael to James Randi is that both men started skeptics' organization, Randi being a co-founder of Committee for Scientific Investigation of Claims of the Paranormal (CSICOP).

Carmicheal is a parody of "The Amazing James Randy" A magician who tried to disprove all paranormal people with abilities. He even had a cheque just like Carmicheal did in the movie, i believe it went upto 1million dollars in the end, many tried and all failed. James randy rigorously went after Uri Geller "The spoon bending guy" and others too like Peter Popoff (man who claimed he spoke to god) and James Hydrick (claimed to be a telekentic). You should watch the documentary called "An Honest Liar" might pick up on some extra things that you didn't see the first time. Also when Carmicheal hints that he would love to me a member at "The Club" to Jack during the commercial break and that "he would fit right in" in the club, eludes to the conspiracies about the orgies at the groove and how there are only men and no women.
I think you are right that the demon was getting Jack to complete the ritual. I also think that he was tricked about his wife being the sacrifice. I have watched quite a few videos about the film, but haven't seen anyone talk about the captioning on the screen at the end which flashes between END TRANSMISSION and SO IT IS DONE (the same words are used in the satanic ritual documentary).
I loved the movie. It knew what it was trying to do and commited to the bit. The acting and the back and forth between live and behind the scenes were handled so well and never took away from the momentum. David Dastmalchian knocked it out of the park.

The imagery of the owl for his program, bohemian grove is known for its own mascot… I loved this movie.
Did anyone else notice that when Lilly first came onto the stage, Jack looked at her almost in reverence and bowed to her? Like he looked completely in awe of her, said "wow" and then when they shook hands he bowed to her.
The film actually leaves the ending (and in fact the entire film) up to wide interpretation, ranging from everything being taken at face value to it all being a guilt delusion. One point I haven't seen anyone address yet is the fact that Jack may not be responsible for his wife's death the way you might think. She is said to have died of lung cancer although not having been a smoker. Well, Jack WAS. Her death could easily be explained as arising from second-hand exposure, not a deal with a demon. On another aspect, you could surmise the Grove group rituals are also connected to Abraxas and that Jack was tricked into completed the sacrifice of Lilly which was supposed to take place when her cult went up in flames (since the "reel" about the cult specified that they bred children for human sacrifice). Another interpretation of the Skeleton guy is that he represented the skeletons in Jack's closet. There are numerous comments during the film implying routine sexual indiscretions by Jack. Very cool film.

I agree people are reading too much into it. It’s meant to be ambiguous, like alot of similar movies. Did jack actually kill them all ? Did he only kill Lilly in an attempt to redeem himself ? Did he not kill anyone and was actually framed by the demon ? Did he knowingly sacrifice his wife and had heavy involvement with the cult, or was he actually confused when confronted by the demon that they knew each other? The fear of the unknown is a lot scarier to people than demons and gore mainly avid horror fans. The more you think about it and the possibilities the more freaked out you get. It’s similar to eyes wide shut or Donnie Darko in that aspect and that makes it great.
I liked it. Wish there was more back story on demon and the "club"

I think that Christou had begun to vomit the same moment Lily landed. As soon as they cut to break they make Jack aware that lily just landed. I believe his powers made him extremely sensitive to the presence of a demon. Just shows to scale how powerful this demon is Christou could feel it from the studio.
2:54 - I’ll tell you what Jack got. He wanted to be the most famous talk show host in history. And he got what he wanted. A psychotic mass murder caught on live TV. That episode would become infamous.
Something that I missed on many viewings was when they rolled the tape back on lilly's conversation with june and you see minnie's ghostly spirit over jacks shoulder, after that was shown theres a close up of Jack shocked and you can see a hand on his shoulder only for it to disappear in the next shot, signifying it could be a demon of sorts controlling over everything.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but I will say that for me, the context was way different than the Blair Witch and Oculus. In fact, it was done better as well. We know why it happened and what the motivations for framing him were. Killing him was the easy thing for the demon to do, instead, he kills everybody, including his wife, and his career, and sends him to prison for the rest of his life to think about it. Hard price to pay for one night of success if you ask me. If that's not terrifying, I don't know what is.

A stunt like that (dropping F bombs on a network show) back then could absolutely be enough to end a guy’s career, so he had reason to be furious and he still stayed composed and didn’t become nasty towards her during break. @@marioargiropoulos7555 he mistreats everyone the whole movie, he dismisses they’re concerns for his own curiosity of what he knows he did and his wife. He lied to them all, even the producer he keeps conversing with during breaks just to make the show revive again, but he knows something is wrong and still continues. He puts the 2 girls at risk knowing something bad is going to happen and they end up dying. His co-host warned him SEVERAL times. The only guy who deserved to die was the scam artist, who would also do ANYTHING to make himself famous all for it to blow up in his face at the end just like Jack. Desperation does not make you innocent, his actions showed otherwise.
*I absolutely understand the ending from historical legal points of view and therefore adds more layers of complexity to the films narrative *Indirectly or directly this film is referencing what lawyers and law enforcement can or cannot do today legally via hypnosis??? *The court case(s) and decades of appeals after what happens, would have been fascinating in itself
I liked the ending, i think we were hypnotized in the end by the demon and what it really happened is that Jack killed the girl under the order by the elite and the demon. While the others deaths were made by the demon, at the end the survivors would not last long since the elite does not want to tell the truth so they might to silence them, they hace power they could do it. Jack might end on a mental institjtion he was just a toy for them

We saw it from the viewers perspective and they played the tape back showing it really happened. Even the actor confirmed they viewed and people saw the demon. He only killed lily it seems but everything else was the demon and everyone saw it. The girl was literally floating and got her throat slit and the other dude neck was snapped around . Any forensics or video or witnesses would know this isn’t possible and isn’t what happened otherwise they all wouldn’t be running and then how would you explain the psychics death
I’m so glad I watched this. The ending left me so darn confused so your explanation is super helpful Thank you! Makes the film so much better now
Thanks!
i have a question, did the host bring this to fruition? he doesn't seem like an evil guy who wants to rule the world. he just wanted a number one late night show.
i really loved this movie and your commentary
Maybe it's only me but I think Carmichael is the devil. The film centers on Jack's pursuit for the truth and Carmichael attempts to dispel that the devil exists. The clue is in the title, Lilley is a distraction, yes she is possessed but not by the devil. The other major clue is Carmichael performing magic, that we all saw...I.e master of illusion. Another reference to the devil and finally as an illusionist he performed the greatest trick....that the devil does not exist by finding ways to discredit Jack. He then appears to be killed by the demon but listen to what he says, he calls it master, he knows what it is. I have watched this movie several times now and I am fully convinced the plot lines are there to deceive us that ultimately the devil doesn't exist yet he is named in the title. Another clue is that there is a presence already on set way before Lily appears suggesting the devil was already there ie Carmichael.

Yes. I think Minnie and Carmichael are far more important than the actual demon. Minnie shows up during the most potent bouts of supernatural activity. I believe the electricity in the film represents her. I believe she is much stronger than the demon, I think she even embarrassed and intimidated the demon by causing the chair to levitate. Carmichael definitely has significance but I can't figure it out yet. He mentioned multiple times near the end that he needed Jack to focus on his hypnosis. Carmichael is the world's best illusionist/hypnotist, I don't believe he is supernatural as none of his fears affect lily or the demon. I do think he is manipulating Jack for some reason though
I thought this movie was awesome- love the 70’s nostalgia and fresh storyline
WTF! how did this go unnoticed... best thing I've seen in ages!!! hilarious, with a nice build up to the gore. The demon girl is a scream!
FANtastic!
My theory (from people’s reviews) is that because Jack denied the aid of Satan and other demons to get where he was then in his career the demons destroyed everything and forced the truth out in a way. I mean the demons got him there and he can disregard the safety and well being of everyone else who helped his reputation and fame, but Satan dose not take kindly to being walked on like that. I think if he embraced them during hi interview Satan and/or the demons would have further supported his career. Jack betrayed them and Satan got the final laugh. It also fits within the theme of doing everything for fame and power even at the cost of others

The same he got was for killing Lilly. You can't be this dense
A good investigative documentary about the Satanic Panic & Michelle Remembers is the 2023 film Satan Wants You. Unlike Lily and Dr. June Ross-Mitchell, Lawrence Pazder and Michelle Smith, the authors of Michelle Remembers, actually got married in real life. Pazder's first wife is understandably sore about Michelle Smith causing the break-up of her marriage & she ended up completely debunking Michelle Smith's story by finding an elementary school yearbook, which proved that Michelle Smith was in school completely uninjured and unharmed when she was supposedly being kidnapped, tortured, and beaten by Satanists. In addition, Michelle Smith's sisters also go on record to say that everything Michelle said about her supposed Satanic cult experience is untrue.
Good movie...Iwish they didn't use CGI...it was so unecessary.
Watched this tonight! Heard good buzz about the film but hadn't heard it was filled with so many great references and homages to real occult and Satanic Panic era stuff. Loved that aspect of it! I think I was annoying my partner by blurting out in excitement everything I noticed. You hit on a lot of the major ones and I think there are some more subtle references in there too. As an example, the girl being named Lily which is likely short for Lilith, who was closely associated with owls (as is Bohemian Grove's Moloch). Perhaps the naming of her character was just coincidence, but I doubt it considering the heavy-handed use of symbolism and references in this film. Makes me wonder how many other little winks and nods to occult history I might have missed.
I didn't sleep after watching this movie, even the Terrifier didn't frighten me like how this one did. 😂😂 I even remember regretting watching it at night
To me, thought skeleton dude was part of the cult-keeping tabs on Jack Watched it at home, some things I missed-this movie was awesome 1st, this episode’s sponsor-4got name but the picture is of 2 hands shaking, both a bit different skin tone (darker/lighter)-absolutely felt symbolic of “a deal being made” 2-b4 actual movie “the episode” begins-during the intro speaking about Jack & his history-there’s a news clipping. It’s an interview w/Jack about the show’s previous host & how he died on an elevator that crashed down. It quotes Jack “He told me he was going down, I didn’t think he meant so literally!”-the beginning of Jack’s deal & rise? It was interesting to pause & read that. 3-think he caught this one-I didn’t catch it at the theatre. 1st part of Lily’s interview, the glades start shattering due to the overblown loud sounds of the cohost’s theremin (spelling? Device that makes eerie sounds w/out touching it)-but there’s a tiny vanity/beauty mirror, & Jack’s wife also appears in that mirror suddenly. Caught me way off guard. Sure there are some other ones, this show actually has plenty to unpack-but one I really liked that I think most prob did catch-after Jack realizes he’s killed Lily, & you hear sirens on the way-show cuts to black, bottom left says “end transmission” or “error transmission”-but it changes in & out to “So It Is Done”-mirroring what Christ said on the cross for His final words “So it is done.” Loved this film, masterclass Now? I am as giddy as a damn kid b4 Christmas about Long Legs-Nick Cage a serial killer of the occult, Maika Monroe (It Follows actress)-the federal agent hunting him, but somehow gut wrenchingly she is very much linked personally in some way to the killer. Marketing crew on this movie have been genius, portraying absolute dread but telling us nothing at all. Movie looks properly twisted & bleak…much like Se7en but maybe even darker. Anyone hasn’t seen the teasers to Long Legs-CHECK THEM OUT! “There’s another every year” “Say your prayers” “You have the teeth of the hydra upon you” “The daughter of the seventh She” Anyway-loved the vid, thank you for your work on it m8👍
Just watched this - definitely one of the best horror movies I've seen in awhile!
This movie is fuckin amazing I watched it 666 times
I disagree with the narrative that the demon is the big bad of the movie. Consider this: Minnie devastated christou, she absolutely hurt him and she caused the electrical disturbance when christou was being affected. The demon wasn't even in the studio when this happened and that's extremely important. I believe Minnie is the antagonist. I believe Minnie to be the ELECTRICITY. The demon appears to slightly affect cameras and maybe break those glasses. When electricity SURGES during the possession that's when the chair gets lifted. The demon/lily are terrified and embarrassed by this. The demon didn't know why he was levitating. Minnie took over. There is a scene during the possession when the demon talks directly to Jack. I paused the movie and went frame by frame and there is an instant where minnies ghostly likeness shows up in lillies head. This movie isn't as simple as the demon did it. I think in time the true sequence of events will be revealed. I believe jacks whole scene at the end where he is out of it after seeing Minnie in the frame by frame may be caused by the Skeptics hypnosis. He multiple times insisted to Jack to pay attention to his hypnosis. I think the electro demon was some time of merging or alliance with minnies ghost. The demon just isn't that powerful on its own.
Great movie. I liked the ending too. Keeps you guessing
I had to check my playback speed to see if it was off. Turns out you just speak without taking pauses.
Finally someone who got the ending right
The ending is bs. The entire film is found footage, which means we do not see whats going on in his head. Remember, the possessed girl DID NOT GET HYPNOTIZED LIKE THE WHOLE AUDIENCE! The ending in ridiculous. If they were trying to be clever they failed miserably

I haven’t seen a comment about this but I remember him saying at the end the same thing the hypnotist said to Gus when he was trying to wake up ( maybe he didn’t and I heard it wrong and therefore this theory is all wrong). What if the whole time he was hypnotized in the forest before fame or anything and this is what they were showing would be the consequence? Idk why he would say that at the end. He could’ve just been saying it to not believe he just killed lily. I need someone to clarify and haven’t seen anyone talk about his last lines in the movie. They have to be significant right? Anyways I have a love hate relationship with movies that end like this lol. I want to know!
I think all this film was missing is it forgot what its actually setting was, this wasn’t the actual live show this was a recording being played for audiences in retrospect. The film started with an intro to Jack and his story, here is a recording and behind the scenes of what happened that night, why not end it with a similar segment explaining what happened after the show, what happened to Jack? What were the nations response, I feel that would have made it five stars but instead it just ended

Sold his soul for the price of fame the truth in plain sight an I wonder just how real this movie is
Worth owning on VHS/DVD/BLU-RAY
Jack was part of it? I watched the whole movie, and the thought never entered my mind.
The actress who played Lily did an amazing job! That couldn't have been easy to portray something else Also inhabiting and controlling you. And she did it so effortlessly that it really felt like there was two people in possession of her. In her awkward movements, sort of like there was two people tugging over the remote control. She was amazing!
Is it just me or does the Jack Delroy character look like Christopher Lee?
Is the owl statue a reference to that weird occult gathering that happens by Hollywood elites where they gather atound some giant owl statue??
It had so many reference to real stuff
I think the demon was trying to get Jack to finish the ritual by making him sacrifice his wife’s soul. The demon tricked him into thinking that he was helping her. After he stabbed her and gave her soul to the demon, Jacks wish finally came true and he became the greatest TV host.

I feel like this was made for a certain demographic. I remember all the things it references, but a newer audience would not know any of this, and without that outside information, the movie seems pretty flat. The end made me think. That maybe Jack lost his mind after killing his wife. Maybe out of mercy. And that he actually killed everyone in the studio. And none of it was actually real.
The guy in the skeleton is the devil that's why he doesn't move or react. He is watching his investment for a return.
I liked the whole movie. It felt like a whole stage play, especially the ending. I felt like Jack unknowingly traded Minnie for fame but contributed to her death. Something about all the smoking we see in the movie and how she died while never smoking in her life. I think this was a bit stunt to show Jack what he traded for this last night of glory.
