This song was written in Pleasant Grove, Utah in 2006. I was working with Ryan on his 3rd Kaskade album in a rented warehouse space, poorly converted into a studio. On one side of us was a boutique dog-food-making business and on the other side, metal workers . Needless to say, we did all the live recording at night to avoid the noise.
Ryan’s DJ career was just starting to gain momentum. He’d play the weekends and then we’d convene back at the studio and try to make magic. One Saturday night at about 4 in the morning, (Sunday morning), I get a call from Ryan. He just got done playing a night club in LA. He was so hyped! “I think this is going to work!”, I remember him almost singing it. The show was an existential experience. He described it in detail along with his emotions.
Over the next couple days, the imagery of that conversation and night stuck with both of us. When we hit the studio the next week, 4AM was born… directly inspired by that experience. Becky was the perfect voice to compliment the vibe and,… I guess the rest is history. It’s one of my favorite songs I’ve been a part of. It truly was inspired and has a potent ability TO INSPIRE.
Reimagining the song for Echos was a lot of fun! We hope it still speaks to you.
