I was working with Ryan on his Strobelite Seduction album. The album was in its final stages of production, almost ready to mix and then master. This was probably around early February of 2008. We were working in my home studio I had just finished building. That album had some heaters on it… “Move For Me”, “Angel On My Shoulder”, “Step One Two” and of course, “I Remember”. My personal favorites were probably “Pose” and “I’ll Never Dream”. Sooooo… around this time the idea for “You Can Be The One” was born.
We created the great driving sample sound from a few random synths and cut-up stored sounds we had laying around. I remember remarking “that’s a million dollar sound”. It really didn’t call for much more production besides bass, drums and vocals because that sample-sound was so rich.
The hook… “You can be the one I want. I can be the one you long for”, I pulled emotion from my lonely teenage years. Ha. I remember looking up at the ceiling in my room as a 16 years old listening to Air Supply and feeling a great loneliness. Telling this story makes me laugh, but there’s a loneliness deep inside me still that can torment and destroy meaning… but yeah, how amazing is it to find unconditional love.
So the song is 80% complete and the album deadline is looming:
Me: I think this is a big song
Ryan: Yeah, I like it. It’s strong.
Me: I think it should go on the album
Ryan: I don’t know if there’s time… and, I don’t think it needs it.
And that’s the story of how “You Can Be The One” didn’t make it on “Strobelite Seduction” and made it onto the 2nd Late Night Alumni album. Strobelite Seduction didn’t need the song… Late Night Alumni did.
This one has a special place in my heart. It tackles the heaviest of emotion; rejection, in a light way. I love our new take on it. More somber but still very hopeful. Enjoy!
