Latch

This is the promised video that outlines how to install the latches I make and sell on my Etsy store. It’s a bit eccentric and I beg your forgiveness on the amateur nature of the editing and cinematography. I’m sure I’ll get better at this as time goes on. I had lost my camera man at this point and was working solo making the footage.

    Well, it's made using my CNC router, and then hand-tooling for a bit with some specialty jigs I've made for that process. Not very interesting to me but I'll consider it Mr. Rick.

    @rolandgdean heck... and here I thought you made it by hand. Lol. I have no CNC equipment. I do have a router though. It would be neat to have a detail video of how you made it. Cheers!

    You do very nice work. I'm attempting to learn some woodworking and I have the scars to prove it. Sorry you lost your cameraman. If you want to appear more engaging when doing video alone, be sure you're looking at the camera lens. It can be difficult to learn NOT to look at your screen when doing video, but watching yourself instead of looking at the lens has the effect of making you look like you're speaking to someone beside or behind the viewer. I'm a huge fan of the Star Wars intro and nerdy mechanical sound effects though. Great job.

    Thanks for the compliments. I was thinking about getting some post-its and sticking one over the screen and drawing eyes on it where the lens it...lol. Because YOU ARE RIGHT, I cannot seem to stop looking at my reflection in the phone. My camera man that day was supposed to be my sons but he decided to sleep in...lol. Since then, I've been a solo operation. Also, I'm glad you like the nerd editing, I was dubious that the woodworking audience would appreciate it. Thanks for watching and commenting.

    Very nice. Not only the latch, but also wooden hinges. Cosman or your own design hinge ? 😀

    Thanks Richard. The hinge is MY OWN take on what Cosman does. He learned it from one of his teachers decades ago. I'm not sure if HE has made any changes through the years. Thanks for commenting.

    I like the latch Roland. What kind of wood is your box?

  • @rolandgdean

    @rolandgdean

    Жыл бұрын

    That really RED wood is Padauk aka: Vermillion. It's a really pretty wood and most of the boxes I sell are made with it because people LOVE that red color. I don't like working with it because the dust makes me sneeze and the dust is ALSO used as red dye in some parts of the world because of how mush is stains things...which is just a problem for me working with it.

  • @Mr_Rick

    @@rolandgdean I thought it was Paduak but wasnt sure. Paduak I buy is a little lighter. Work with all hand tools only and you'll have shavings and no dust. One question... Do you have a spring in your latch?

    How much experience do you have with these latches? In other words, what can you say about their wear life? Will they still work nicely in a year, 5 years or 20 years?

  • @rolandgdean

    @rolandgdean

    Жыл бұрын

    That's a great question Jaime. I invented them in July of 2020 and the fist one I installed is in a box I use pretty often and it's still working VERY well. ALSO, they CAN be routed out and replaced just as easily as they were installed in case one fails. Over these past two years, I've installed them in MANY Customer boxes and had ZERO complaints of failure or even minor malfunctions of any kind.

    Hi Roland. Do you sell these wooden latches? If not do you mind sharing how they are made?

  • @rolandgdean

    Yes! I DO sell them on my Etsy store actually, since most people don't have the CNC machine to make them. I think the link for that is in the description under the video but let me see if I can drop it here as well.
