Agreed! No matter what grade I've taught, I don't like non-structured days. Do you have any advice for working with upper elementary students? This could be academic, social emotional, or advice on their personal interests. My admin is moving me from 1st to upper elementary next year, and I haven't taught them for at least 6 years (I keep being moved around in my district because of COVID/enrollment numbers).

It sucks that you’re getting moved around so much, but I love upper elementary! Joke around with them, hang out with them, show them that you care by listening to them and asking questions. They are getting to the age where they are trying to be “cool” and more independent, but if you can develop a good relationship with them, they still want to talk and hang out with you, which is why I love them! Consistency with routines, expectations, and consequences are huge. They will test your boundaries and run with it if they find a weakness. It’s tough sometimes, but if you can find a good balance with those things, then you’ll be great! Overall, they are super fun and interesting and funny, and I love getting to work with the older kids because you can have some deeper conversations but they are still kids at heart.

I feel you! This year has been that way for me. I am missing them a lot and a little sad that I won’t see them again. We have them transition to a middle school so we won’t even be in the same building 😢 but yeah I miss their stories. But summer is gonna be good for you to recharge. Also, I love karaoke! If you need a singing buddy I’m down :)

Yep - same here! They go off to middle school in another building, most likely never to be seen again. 🥺 And yes!! Let’s go karaoke!
