On teams I've played with. Giving the last ball to someone in the middle going up is to bait balls on that player. Usually giving it to the best dodger/blocker/surviver so it takes the attention away from the other teammates and hopefully getting back enough balls to setup an attack. That player also has an option to take a throw if the other team isn't respecting them. There might be other subtleties to it, but that's the gist of it.

My boy Max is right. I usually tell people to "go fishing". Get some ammo back. Make yourself look like an irresistible target, to the point where the other team might crack and take a shot they shouldn't. Plus, you technically are still a threat, so it takes pressure off the wings who are probably the preferred target.

In the very least, your messing with their throw cadence. With 5 balls, they’re likely going to send at least two over. If you’re the single ball survivor, you can often pump fake to mess up their count/coordination. Even if they’re not sending anything at the single ball (which is rare) they’re less likely to have a coordinated attack in their intended target. Bonus points for this role if you let them select their target before giving your survivor the ball. They might target your winger if they have the last ball, and if you pass the ball to the survivor after the play call, they don’t all know who is throwing and at whom. “Are we throwing at our initial target, or the annoying guy 15 feet off the line?”

Honestly, that used to work 3 years ago but now that everyone has strategies to counter it, it usually results in the middle getting smoked or some other defenseless players. Losing 1-2 players for 3 balls is not worth it.

@@Devosimms Well to be fair, the west coast has only been playing this format for about 3 years XD and that is including lockdowns. The Nocturnals have been playing for even less than that. I am sure if it stops working for them at national and international tournaments, they will adjust. Maybe drop some fat knowledge about the hot strats that counter it.

Stepping out is a reasonable move in cloth rules, because the half is 10 minutes and one set is 3 min. If you are losing on points and you are for example 1v3 you want to step out to start a new set as quickly as possible, because your opponent will most likely play to waste time and try to finish the whole 3 min set without actually hitting you. Also if the last 3 minute set ends on main 10 minute clock with less then 1:30, you get an extra set of 1:30 at the end of the half

Hey Dudes! Great video, love seeing the breakdown! Everyone has different skills and playstyles, so very interesting to see the different perspectives and reactions. the single player forward is fairly common in Canada from what I've seen, what do most of the Australian teams/players do in that situation?

I see that play of the one person moving up, but I've also seen that one person stay back and then when the other team go to throw the one player charges forwards to try to get a quick and close shot off.

Oh, and my team has played with the idea of moving up, passing the ball back, trying to catch, but having someone else with the ball to split the focus

When I’m the last player, I first think “what does my team need?” Just like you guys said, sometimes the solo has to drag things out or try and force a quick finish. I also think “what is my plan?” If I think I can play defensively and throw people out when they’re on defense, I’ll be really conservative. If I think they have better throwers than my defensive skills, I’ll look more for catches and quick counters. To me, that last player should always have a plan!

Last man standing becomes survival mode. I try to block everything and only throw when needed. I like to run down the clock…
