Thrash developed in the early Eighties as a subgenre of the broader heavy metal category and gained momentum throughout the decade. From the pioneering "Big Four" bands-Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer and Anthrax-to Exodus, Testament, Overkill and Sepultura, thrash metal pushed the boundaries of aggression, speed and stamina with fast, muted open-string-based riffs and furious lead breaks.

Best thrash lesson I've ever seen.
The demonstrations in this video are very well done. I really like the multiple passes and how patient he is with his teachings. Not all of are experts yet and he is easy to follow for us learning players.

I LOYKE YOUR STOYL !
I was in the mosh pits when the thrash movement exploded - I saw Metallica as an opening act, if that tells you anything. The thing that I LOVED(and still do) about thrash was the emphasis - or 'featuring', if you will - of RHYTHM guitar. Yeah, there are crazy leads too, but a lead is like a flavoring, whereas the rhythm is the entire meal. I'd much rather hear a chunky riff than a fiddly lead any day.
This is not only the best thrash lesson I’ve seen but also perhaps the best beginner lesson for someone wanting to play metal. Incredible.
Brilliant. It really helped me a lot, specially with your picking explanations. Greetings from Buenos Aires and great job!
Listen to that punchy, bass-y tone! I vote this guy has the best metal sound - you can hear all the notes, the signal stays clean, the chords aren't muddy, and the riffs have the kick to stand up to the drums; way to go!
3:00 Ohh don't gotta worry about my forearm stazzing out. Button mashing a controller my whole life has prepared me for this. XD
Thank you for this great lesson, Martin (and Guitar World).
Nice man simple to the point no showing off. I wish everyone would teach like this!
the song is: Anthrax - Caught in a Mosh
I’m back again. This is the best galloping practice I’ve found
That's really cool AND easy. Nice little set of riffs to add to my arsenal. Thanks!
Much appreciating a guitarist who speaks rhythm in the lingo of drummers.
Lamb of God, Pantera, and other groove/death metal bands are completely inspired by thrash. Thrash is the reason why death metal even exists. Genre elitists everywhere.

I would explain that breaking it down and counting the beats until you get it internalized helps make one a tighter player, but then I probably would be talking over your head.

I like his teaching one and two and a. Me a beginner, has to start at the beginning. Learn correctly and accurately. Some day it will be fast and tight for the right tempo
This guy gave terrible advice for EQ. If you want a bedroom tone then listen to what he said. If you want a decent tone: Turn the gain down from full until it sounds just a little too clean, then bring it back up just a little bit. I start with my bass turned all the way down and turn it up until it starts to really add balls to the low end, too much more and it becomes boomy. My midrange I try to keep cranked up, this is where most of your definition is as a guitar player, learn to love mids. I turn them up until they're a little too loud and then bring them back down just a bit. Highs I like to adjust by playing a full open E chord with the treble turned all the way down, and I turn it up until I can clearly hear the high notes when I strum the chord.
@theconqueror8687

Depends on whether you're into a very heavy rock/metal rhythm guitar sound,or if you prefer a much more 'rounder' mid-rich tone :)When I'm playing rock or metal rhythms/riffs,I usually use scooped sound..But when I switch to rock/metal lead guitarplaying or shred,I will increase the mids.It works with my Jackson with EMGs 81-85.\m/

Shannon DeLorme I want that guitar though!I looked at their site but it must be a custom job for him!
@kdchrm

The Conqueror, all in all it really depends on the context in a given mix. Genre doesn't matter so much as occupying the proper Hz range in the band setting. This may also require a different EQ pattern for recording vs playing a show. Obviously this is more of a general guideline than a hard rule, Dimebag used scooped mids and it worked in Pantera. But as a lone guitar tone it mostly sounded like shit, the soul all comes from his playing and style. However in most live situations scooping the mid-range in your guitar is going to bury it under the bass/kick drum and the hi-hats.
@kdchrm

Gary Hundsrucker I was thinking it's just an older model, but you might be right about the custom. Looks like the M-II with a slanted single coil in the neck instead of the usual humbucker.
@marcusdavies4069

he is talking about the rhythm sound which with these settings will be awful for lead work but thats the setting alot thrasher did use during the 80s
you're a great teacher Martin....thank you
you sir, have an amazing pick
DO NOT SCOOP YOUR MIDS thats the worst thing ever
@AnnihilaticJC
10 жыл бұрын
Lots of metal bands (including metallica) scoops their mid quite a bit. not a whole lot, but definitely not boosted in their mid range. so i guess its quite flat which is considered "scooped" to some people. for me i just max out all my eq for that sweet brown sound by evh
@takingdaggers
10 жыл бұрын
Agreed. Most actually boost their mids. It's all about getting it right where it sounds awesoeme.
@MetalMarauder
10 жыл бұрын
John Schiermeister Untrue. Most professionals don't scoop their mids because it makes it hard for the guitar to be heard past the bass and drums.
@Mikeyprs21
10 жыл бұрын
Metal Marauder ^ indeed, some people do forget that the guitar is a mid-ranged instrument - so live-wise play to it's strength, don't weaken it! recording wise, it's not quite so bad - but still need to be careful with it.
@kornklone
9 жыл бұрын
It works fine for rhythm playing and it can be great, but in leads there is just no way to play without mids. Just like Martin said
This lesson is great, and the technique is brilliant, but that tone is not conducive to teaching this style well. Your really don't want the gain all the way up, and you should really up the treble and use SOME mids, otherwise you get a flubbery and limp sound.
Amazing perficet and so great , That is you . I had to follow your lessons .
Holy shit this lesson is so in-depth, really well done
Never set the gain on full that is a terrible idea.

Jeez! Loads of these beginner guitar lessons give way to much attention to tiny fine tuning details before even explaining the basic technique! 5 minutes of how to use your wrist? Just tell people how to play the damn riff, then refine the technique!

I've always had the same issue with instructional lessons dating way back to the 90s. Some of them start off slow enough, but then you are bombarded with 4 years of theory.

Hi. Really great exercise. Learnig this since 2 days, now I'm at the 3rd part. I come from the accoustic guitar, singer songwriter such things so I never used power chords. Think this exercise is perfect when you are already an accoustic guitar player with no much experience in metal guitar. Hope it will be my introduction to this :-) Thanks a lot and greatings from germany!

Are there any videos out there for intermediate metal players. Seriously I don't need to know how to palm mute every time. I don't need to know how to crank my bass and treble to get a "metal tone"
He pretty much nailed each style to the band perfectly.
That is some monstrous tone.
