Last-Chance Planter | Rescuing and Designing with the Half-Dead! ☠️🌱😵

Hey friends! Nothing makes me feel more powerful than bringing a plant back from the brink of death. Today we're going to kick it up a notch and design a container with a little collection of forgotten treasures that were destined for the dumpster.
Come along as we bargain shop and save lives. We're practically superheroes today!
Stay cool out there,
Kate

Kate I so appreciate you. Thankyou for always taking the time to explain what the plant is and how to care for it. I have learned so much from watching your videos. I decided at the age of 72 to take up gardening, go figure! So running into your channel was a God send. I also live at the Lowe’s bargain clearance rack, I figure if I wind up killing the plant due to my ineptness I won’t feel so bad! So today’s video was so informative not only how to revive but then how to put together the plants you bought in a pot. Thankyou thankyou thankyou my dear.

Great gardening tips, thanks, I’ll look out for the half price choices now that I know what to do about reviving them.

Love this planter. One of my favorite things to do is resurrect clearance plants. I’ve done it with trees, shrubs, roses, perennials and annuals. Your container already looks good and is going to look amazing in a few days-and you have the satisfaction of knowing you took something headed for the landfill and gave it a new lease on life! And it’s so much fun to do something like this during the most miserably hot time of the year when I just don’t have the energy to do much else.

Thank you, Kate! I live in Southern California. It’s supposed to be 100 degrees today. It is the perfect weather for crispy plants. In addition to water deprived, I often find these plants are severely root bound and can’t soak up water well. I will just remove them from the pot entirely, rough up the roots and let them soak overnight. Then I will plant. Sometimes I have luck with that.

Loved this video Kate! If I were making a video of my flowers this year, it would be called Bedraggled Grandma Attempts Resucitation of the Same Half Dead Flowers More Than a Few Times. I bought gorgeous annuals back in May, but my spring and summer hasn't gone according to plan and the flowers are still in their store cans. They are worse looking than your rescues. Some new growth is happening but the poor things have gotten too many sporadic waterings. Your video is just what I needed to muster up some energy to go out there and give those little buggers one last chance to grow. Thanks for some much needed inspiration to save my own plants from my own self! Lol 🤣

I have been unable to do much in the garden the last few weeks but your garbage plant video today inspired me to run to Lowe’s to see what was available at a discount. There were four racks but not much I could use. (I was really wanting perennials but no luck.) I did get a huge pot of deep pink and orange lantana for $10 (originally $29.99) and a pretty hosta for $7. We are smack dab in our blistering Alabama summer with temps expected near 100 for the next ten days. Add to that some pretty intense humidity and we don’t spend much time outdoors other than early morning forays to water. This lets me reassess what is working and what isn’t so that when temps cool I can make needed changes.

Your video is so me. The first place I go to when I visit a garden centre or DIY store that sells plants is the bargain plants area. They seem to put so much on sale that just needs a bit of water or has just flopped over because they haven’t given it some support. Their loss is my gain. I have also bought pots of plants that I know are perennials that are on sale as they’ve finished flowering and split them and planted them in the garden for the next year and gained multiple plants from one pot.

I was looking for some Bird of Paradise at Home Depot today, no bueno. But I did see several pots of Plumeria, like each one with two rooted cuttings, no inflow, so no way of knowing the colors. Nearby was a trash can with a 10” broken plumeria trunk, leaves wilting in the sun, and sap had already stopped bleeding. Just laying I. The trash, broke my heart. So I asked the clerk if I could have it out of the trash and take it home. She had to call the supervisor. NOPE…she told me I couldn’t have it, had to be thrown away and would have to buy a full plant. Is that dumb or what?!

Do you use a different criteria when buying dead and damaged perennials versus annuals? I rarely ever look at annuals unless it’s something special and early in the season but I’m always looking for perennials because I have a huge garden so I grow everything I can find seed for myself especially annuals. When I lived at my previous property I gardened solely in containers and didn’t have the space to grow all my plants so I was just wondering if you approached selecting and or your reviving differently? Love your container plantings and your sense of humor. Thanks

I have a flower that needs some trimming now. And all these plants are perennials. Year number 2 and they were all 99 cents. This year they are filling in and blooming. Time for trimming and shaping and fertilizer. I use plant tone and black cow compost. Only lost one plant because I for got to water it. Ugh! But, now it's time to love on them after our days of intense heat. We have had 3 out of 5 light rain days. Had to watch this one! I am so encouraged to try some more in my emptu pots. Oh Florida zone 9b/10.

I always like the way the crescent planters look, wish they were not as expensive but I’m going to save up. Do you have a link we should use to buy them so you get a little credit?

I’ve picked up many sale plants over time. The major problem that I’ve dealt with with some of them is insects. Check them over and be ready to deal with pests.

I’m ordering some of the blue crescent garden containers. I think the colors you have are beautiful and so convenient! Thanks for sharing:).

I love rescuing plants! Today I saw racks of plants they were throwing away at the garden centre at Home Depot 😢. They never bothered putting them on clearance and they wouldn’t let anyone rescue them.

Excellent Episode! 🎉Favorite line, “Free .99!”😅. Phrase would make a great title for a ‘dead and dumpster plant’ seasonal show! 🤔 😊🙏🏾

Such a fun video! I wish we had nurseries here where I could rescue some plants, however Home Depot and Lowe's do not allow it. They say it is an agreement with the growers. Booo!
