Hello everyone.
There are many different types of welding.
TIG welding, MIG welding, electric welding, CO2 welding, laser welding, etc...
Each welding method has its own advantages and disadvantages.
Accordingly, their uses are also different.
TIG welding and laser welding are widely used for thin sheet welding, sheet metal welding, and high-quality welding.
It's probably because it's appropriate for that purpose.
Today, we will briefly compare the differences between TIG welding and laser welding.
We will introduce the contents of how to use the laser welding machine and more various comparison videos later.
Thanks for watching and have a nice week.

    I have welded mig, tig and arc for years and usually with those 3 you can get the weld speed and penatration, but these new welders seem to look like a nice weld and apparently they are fast and efficient but I have been told that the flash from these machines can be very dangerous to other workers if you don't have a well sealed welding area.?.

    Its still a laser, and a very high powered one, essentially. And while looking directly into a regular welding arc is unhealthy over time, a high powered laset can essentially blind you pretty quickly. I dont know the absolute specifics here but, based on my knowledge of industrial lasers and their safety, this would be the main issue.

    The Laser welder was feeding in filler metal for starters and the TIG was a simple fusion weld so apples to oranges. The discoloration of the tig was due to a lack of shield gas flow. If there had been sufficient flow with the gas lens on there the discoloration would have been minimal. With the TIG and a piece of small filler simply layed on top of the joint of the fusion pass it would have resulted in a far better finish.

I work stainless steel mostly AISI 304 and 316, I work for pharmaceutical and alimentary, so for me full penetration welding is a daily thing. Can I perform a full penetration weld with the laser? Can I get a good weld on the outside protected by Argon? If it's possible, can I perform a full penetration welding with the same level of "non-deformation" saw in the video, due to the cold precess? Thank u in advance whoever can answer me, I really would like to know, I love improving my workshop and make my employees's lives better.

    One important key point is that fiber laser welder is capable of adjusting the output power, of which affecting the laser beam energy thus giving a different penetration on different materials. At present, the most common handheld laser welder is able to coupled with 3kW laser power, with a max penetration at 7-8mm on mild steel materials, 6-7mm on stainless steel. Copper, aluminum or brass are hard materials to be welded by laser due to its high reflection rate on laser wavelength. However, laser technology continues to improve, we will soon have a powerful handheld laser welder which can have much deeper penetration

    I think you should stress test both welds using a simple H shape, table design to test the sheer force to see which performs at the highest loading of weight. The methods work but we should ask ourselves, which is the stronger weld, by testing.

  • @JAY-fq7sb

    @JAY-fq7sb

    That was my thought also. Almost every weld test I have done didn't care how fast I did it. They wanted to know two things. Did my weld have flaws, bubbles, and did my weld stand up to a stress test? Fast doesn't always mean better. You're stitching two pieces of metal together. That isn't a process that needs to be rushed in some applications. As in pipe fittings. That could mean a failure or even catastrophic failure that could harm, or even hurt, or kill someone. When something is under that much pressure. I would rather burn a weld in for as much longer time than speed up the process and take the risk of a failure. I do see where this tech could be applied in other areas in manufacturing. In some applications it just wouldn't replace the tig welder at all. Those areas Tig is King and will remain superior until someone comes along with something that can beat it. It is a neat rig. I will say that.

    @@RestorationWatch I am someone who worked in a manufacturing environment that used mig welding robots and handheld mig welding. We produced lawnmower parts. This application is for the Aerospace industry. The original video didn't make that clear. It was making a show of how much more superior this laser welder is. In this guy's description. The cost would be WAY too much for a lawnmower manufacture to apply this to its production line. Unless you wanted to mow Mars. The lawn mowers would cost so much it wouldn't make since. Have you priced the cost of Nitrogen gas for welding? Just a small bottle for me to tig weld was $450+ in 2019. I don't want to know what it is now!!! This Laser welder may be Awesome, but it will be for specific applications where absolutely no contamination of the weld can be present, and it MUST be perfect and strong. It is just very new, and everyone needs to see what it is capable of. 👍

  • @RestorationWatch

    @RestorationWatch

    @@JAY-fq7sb I was working in a manufacturing environment where we had robot welders back in the 1980s. I also had my own manufacturing business not long after where I used my skills as a First Class Welder MIG welding mild steel. With LASER welding you don't need to use nitrogen at all, in fact, it's REALLY dangerous to be working with nitrogen! With LASER you only need to use standard argon or helium with CO2 being the most used gas for laser welding. Just to be clear, there are much cheaper Chinese LASER welders that come with wire feeders already on the market that are VERY affordable, and when compared to a TIG welder are 4 times faster (up to 4.6 times in fact). They also can clean the weld up with the LASER afterwards, as well as be used to cut metal much like a plasma cutter, but even cleaner. We've all seen LASER cut metals by now. By the way, India are also manufacturing LASER welders with MANY manufacturers. They also use the process heavily in their industry. This is not a niche welding process, but rather the future of welding manufacturing processes. It is not "new" at all, and it taking over in a big way already. All that said, the MIG welder is still king for general manufacturing when it comes to manual welding of mild steel. Not to mention the millions of robot welders that are already in use that populate factories all over the world. These welders have very long lives and are reused in new ventures regularly.

    One thing I've noticed about laser welding is that, unless everyone gets the settings incorrectly, it does not penetrate the base metal very much

    this is not entirely true ... during laser welding, the penetration is small, but due to the low temperature of the weld and minimal heat dissipation (energy is applied precisely to the weld and in a much more controlled way) around the weld, you get a weld with much better strength parameters

    Лазерная сварка очень специфическая технология. Основной недостаток - нагрев только поверхности и очень низкое КПД лазера. По этому варят лишь тонкие детали. А в космосе варят электронным лучом. (Как кстати и поворотный узел крыла у ТУ160)

    @@ikuznyetsov Специфическая ? Да ! И у каждой специфики есть свои предпочтения. Неоспоримые достоинства лазерной сварки это скорость, отсутствие термической деформации в зоне сварки, что в общем то является неоспоримым преимуществом по сравнению с другими видами сварки в автомобильной промышленности при сварке кузовных элементов. Если бы на сервисных центрах и СТО при проведении ремонтно-сварочных работ применяли именно этот вид сварки то кузова в местах сварки долго бы не подвергались воздействию коррозии (имхо).

    I've only learned about this form of welding recently and I'm convinced this is the future of welding in manufacturing settings. For small scale stuff and outdoors I think MIG and TIG are still the kings due to the safety requirements of this type of welding, you can't exactly setup a tent everywhere you want to weld. But if your producing stuff in a workshop I don't see why one of these wouldn't be perfect, just throw up a few barriers in a corner somewhere and you're good.

    The bending from heat on the tig example was due to low travel speed, notice he reduced the amps to 80. This reduces his initial heat and delays the welding pool creation and forward movement meaning you have to move slower to keep the weld pool. This in turn adds more heat to the workpiece. Set the machine to 100-120 amps and hit it right away, get your weld pool going and get moving. This kind of seems like a promo piece for laser welding and setting up TIG to fail. Just my opinion...

This machine only welds in one welding position, which thicknesses limit to be welded, pipe welds, and which thicknesses of the consumable material that in this case is the wire and what kind of gas to use for weld protection? and finally a better video could be made with different materials to be welded and positions and also what weight is the size of the machine.. a big hug from the Brazilian people who follow your videos and your channel

    Laser has a much sharper focus, this concentrates heat. GTAW power supply is constant current, meaning variable voltage since arc length dictates voltage. Long arc means higher voltage which means more heat over larger area. Laser will not do well in chrome moly, the rapid cooling will make a brittle heat affected zone.
