This video shows my number one selling woodworking item for craft shows. Not only does it sell well, but it also increases traffic to my booth and enables sales of other items. For the side hustler, or small business minded maker/woodworker, there are some great tips here. However, there's also loads of tips for the hobbyist on styles, designs, and efficiency.
There are variables on styles, materials, and labor. However, ornaments alone can bring in a couple thousand dollars for a craft show, and increase sales for your other wares, not to mention returning customers and marketing for your brand, as they’re gifted to others or pulled out each year for the holidays.

    Great video! Should try dying wood also. Powder dye mixed in denatured or isopropyl alcohol. So many more color options and the colors are very vibrant. Just did a pile of books keepsake box and got lots of compliments.

    Like you I work with lasers and CNC's in my shop, I use a lot of spray cans also...but recently what I did was buy the new refillable 32 oz sprayer can (no cords, no electrical connections) just unscrew the cap put in your clear and then charge with air from your compressor...( spray cans are now $6.95 each..and I go thru them quickly) it's $29.00 at harbor freight. I only have one right now for the Satin clear but when they come back in stock I will get a couple more for Semi gloss and Gloss. ( maybe flat black cause I go through that a lot also) I can send an image if you like.

    Hi, I am pretty new to Lasercutters and the stuff you can do with it. Frist of all thanks for the great video :) I have some sign designs where I would love to stain wood, but I have two questions about the staining, 1. What kind of Stain should I use? Oil based or waterbased (maybe bad for plywood bc of the would maybe work when drying after stained)? 2. What type of plywood do you use for staining in terms of color? I guess I cant turn a walnut (dark) plywood sheet baby blue with stain..

  • @SixEightWoodworks

    It’s pretty quiet. I’m able to run it late at night without impacting neighbors or my sleeping kids above the garage. Most will pipe exhaust outside of the house. (Drill a hole like a dryer vent) Asmoke purifier eliminates most of the smell, but you’ll run through filters a lot.

    I have an in-line fan that pulls the fumes out more plus the built in fan to pump it outside. If I run it at night I use a smoke purifier.

    You better get those made now…school starts in the next week or two, I’m sure! Those ornaments look great! A couple of questions: What do you think was your average cost for materials? What do you price them? Is that $1000-$2000 your total sales or your profit? Any idea of how many people attend the craft show? What percentage of your buyers are you able to up sell to some of your higher priced items? Thanks for the info. I’m trying really hard to justify the purchase of one of these machines and these actual numbers would be very helpful with deciding if we are in similar markets.

  • @SixEightWoodworks

    @SixEightWoodworks

    Great questions! Obviously, there are a ton of variables. Typically, I sell my ornaments in the $10-$25 price range depending on materials and labor. Not accounting for labor/overhead/etc. it’s about 80-90% profit after materials and consumables. The show I do is a local elementary school and I’d say it’s a medium size foot traffic one. Probably 100 customers or so. What’s great about the ornaments is they usually will buy multiples as gifts or stocking stuffers. Then, once they’ve committed to coming into the booth, by seeing the smaller items they’ll actually look at the higher end woodwork and such. About 30-40% of my customers just get ornaments or small signs. But the rest also get bigger items too. Attaching business cards can get more future projects from the recipients of the ornaments (kind of works as marketing too). Again, loads of variables. But a couple of shows or a some client customization projects (find a realtor or mortgage company) can pay for the machine in my opinion. Best of luck!

    You bet. Different tiers based on style. Last year I did the MDF ones at $10 each and they sold out. The hardwood ones are usually $20 and sell out. So that $10-$25 range. Depends on how many layers and material/labor.

    Have definitely thought about adding the xTool F1 to take to the craft show. Will definitely be personalizing for friends and family at least. Love the drum sander. I’ve had it about 5 years now. Huge time saver on so many applications. Doesn’t eliminate sanding as you’ll still need to use a ROS to remove sanding lines. But one of the best models out there in that price range.

    Fully realized I didn’t sell it well there. Just a one day sale, I sell out whatever I have. Usually $1000-$2000 just for the ornaments. More volume would yield more. Biggest reason is it drives more traffic to my booth for selling other higher end items like pictured in the thumbnail.

I also find you one of the most honest people out there when it comes to letting us know what you do, how it's done and what profit can be made. You must have sold a ton of ornaments to reach that price. Annnndddd you are right, these being traffic to your booth to buy other things.
