Nathalie Stutzmann, Orfeo 55 - Handel: Rinaldo, HWV 7b, Act II: "Mio cor, che mi sai dir?" Contralto by Nathalie Stutzmann pays homage to the deep-voiced female singers of the Baroque, often overshadowed by their castrato peers. "We must remember that the opera composers of the early 18th century saw the female contralto and the male castrato as vocally interchangeable," she points out, “and that the voice most closely resembling a castrato is not the countertenor - produced using a falsetto technique - but the contralto, which is a natural voice." In this program of Handel, Vivaldi, Porpora & more, she sings and conducts Orfeo 55, the instrumental ensemble she founded in 2009.Nathalie Stutzmann, Orfeo 55 - Handel: Rinaldo, HWV 7b, Act II: "Mio cor, che mi sai dir?"

This is very, very beautiful. Mme. Stutzmann is singing it here in D Major (at A=415), which gives it a new emotional dimension and tone colour that are truly extraordinary. Handel scored the original aria in F Major (for the soprano rôle of Almirena (sung by Isabella Girardeau at the 24 February 1711 premier of 'Rinaldo' at the Queen's Theatre in London). Buy there is no 'paycheck' high note in this aria (two and a half octaves up on the dominant) so it is entirely possible that Mme Stutzmann could have sung it a minor third higher even today, had she chosen to do so. But no young soprano could have given this aria the ineffable depth of pathos she brought to it with her mature and experienced voice. All kudos to Nathalie Stutzmann.

I've heard renditions of Lascia ch'io pianga by trebles and countertenors, but there's something about the deep richness of a contralto singing this that really does it for me.
