Thank you for this video! More people need to be aware of this birth defect. My son is now 9 years old and thriving. However, he was misdiagnosed until he was 16 months old. He was finally correctly diagnosed with moderate/severe Laryngomalacia and a Laryngeal Cleft. After a swallow study, it was very obvious that my son was aspirating. He also suffered with severe GERD from birth. He was unable to breastfeed well and I had to switch to formula after a week of desperately trying to breastfeed my son. He vomited ALL the time but wasn't ever in the 'failure to thrive' world. He was 7lbs 5oz at birth and 18lbs at his 3 month checkup. Lol! At 23 months, my sweet boy had a Supraglottoplasty and gel foam injections at Children's Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri. I'm so grateful to those who listened to me and saved my sons life!

I'm now in pediatric laryngology team, dealing with lots of children with laryngomalacia. Cutting the aryepiglottic folds, the surgical management you mentioned, is actually not a good way to deal with it. Usually it heals back and symptoms recurred. We now preferred CO2 laser, so called laser laryngoplasty, to remove redundant soft tissue around larynx or to make epiglottis harder.

My son just got the Supraglottoplasty yesterday; I had to suggest it to the ENT. The ENT did not suggest it or even say anything about the CO2 laser.

@@meganlynn83 omg my daughter was diagnosed with a Laryngeal cleft type 1 last month and she had the surgery 2 weeks ago for it. She also has Laryngomalacia mild as well as long with dysphagia and moderate persistent asthma it’s been a tough ride . They never diagnosed her because she was always a chunky little she is 2 and 40lbs and so they differ think That was the issue. We had a swallow test study and it showed she was aspirating as well we are 2 weeks post opp from her cleft repair and currently waiting to see if the surgery corrected the issue but won’t know till another swallow test study.

I believe my son has Laryngomalacia. He hasn't been diagnosed as of now but he presented with a failure to thrive due to slow feeding, large epiglottis, floppy airway, omega shaped epiglottis, and a rattling sound after feedings. Also breathe holding spells. Just got Supraglottoplasty. Going to see how that helps after he heals. Currently intubated for 8 weeks He is 4 months old.

My son was born with this. And we were told that it would go away at age 4. He is almost 13 now and you can still hear the purring, for lack of better term, when he breaths hard. Curious if we should have this looked at again. No one says anything at his regular checkups so never questioned it.
