My history teacher was talking about the book and mentioned that Metallica wrote a song about it. He said he couldn't remember the one song. The ONE song.

This explains why in "One" it's a landmine and in the book/film it was an artillery shell. James had come up with the idea by himself and they later found out about Johnny Got His Gun.

Dude they made it on their own basically and honestly I think it’s one of the best songs/ videos I’ve ever heard/seen
When Lars was talking about the radio edit and how they cut 2 minutes out, it's crazy how 2 minutes can butcher a video concept. Thank god for youtube.
I remember people getting totally ticked off at Metallica for "selling out" and making a video. Honestly though, I was excited to see them playing and actually getting some of the attention that they deserved after so many years of being "underground". Anyway, it was a great first video and definitely "one "of their all time best songs.

The characters name in the book & movie is Joe (not Johnny). I believe Johnny stands for all the men who went to war. I’m not 100% sure but that’s my interpretation. Johnny Got His Gun is an incredible book and so is the movie! This song totally does it justice!! 🖤
@nessaasdfghjkl5015
2 жыл бұрын
I’d say that’s a good interpretation, they got the title from the phrase used to recruit soldiers “Johnny come get your gun.” The title is implying that he went and “got his gun,” even though he’s an amputee and is suffering he has still succeeded in getting his gun. Kind of criticizing how the government doesn’t care as long about the suffering and deaths as long as they served their purpose in the war
I can't remember anything Can't tell if this is true or dream Deep down inside I feel to scream This terrible silence stops me Now that the war is through with me I'm waking up, I cannot see That there's not much left of me Nothing is real but pain now Hold my breath as I wish for death Oh, please God, wake me Back in the womb, it's much too real In pumps life that I must feel But can't look forward to reveal Look to the time when I'll live Fed through the tube that sticks in me Just like a wartime novelty Tied to machines that make me be Cut this life off from me Hold my breath as I wish for death Oh, please God, wake me Now the world is gone, I'm just one Oh, God, help me Hold my breath as I wish for death Oh, please God, help me Darkness imprisoning me All that I see, absolute horror I cannot live, I cannot die Trapped in myself Body, my holding cell Landmine has taken my sight Taken my speech, taken my hearing Taken my arms, taken my legs, taken my soul Left me with life in hell

I read that book in the 9th grade, pretty wild.
The film is free to view on KZread.
The person on the phone calling was Jason, asking how the bass was sounding in the mix.
Was the phone ringing planned? Because that’s a major theme of the book in the beginning! So crazy.
The book was published September 3rd 1939 two days after the start of WW2 when Germany invaded Poland. And no the main characters name isn’t Johnny, it’s Joe Bonham. The title of the book was inspired by the saying “Johnny get your gun!”, which was a common recruiting slogan during the late 19th and early 20th century in the US. the 1971 movie wasn’t a huge hit because Dalton Trumbo had been blacklisted by Hollywood in 1950 and jailed for 11 months because of his affiliation with the Communist Party in America. Prior to his arrest and blacklisting he was actually Hollywood’s top screenwriter for a time. A movie came out about it in 2015 starring Bryan Cranston as Trumbo. The movie itself is called Trumbo, it’s a great movie

This is has to be one of the darkest, most eerie thrash videos simply because it's so stripped down and talking about the worst situation a person could be in. To be dead but also alive, to be able to think but be devoid of other senses. "All that I see, absolute horror".
The character's name is Joe.

So many ppl in the comments shitting on Lars. Personally he's definitely not in my top 5 drummers but before he did the PR nosedive with Napster he had a lot of heart he played hard basic as can be but he always kept a beat nothing to write home about but without him let's face it the Metallica of the 80s wouldn't of been the same. When Guns N' Roses hired Matt Sorum the Sound changed Steven Adler isn't the best drummer by far but his style was appetite for destruction the illusions albums were so different sonically that it worked with Matt and a great piece of work but it's not Appetite yet ppl don't shit all over Adlers drumming and he was often off beat live plus his own media debacles and I love Steven like Lars. I hate how everyone is a critic but themselves have never a day in their life been in a band let alone a day playing an instrument

You know, I first saw this in the early 1990s and I've seen it and tons of other Metallica footage since then, but I don't think I ever noticed Lars' accent before! You have got to remember that the main reason Metallica did not make music videos was because back then, everything was either so contrived and fake, or it was just bands playing live (which wouldn't do their live shows justice, no pun intended) or pretending to play to a tape. So that's why they were anti-video: there just wasn't anything that really appealed to them. But yes, of course they did a number of crap videos later. But this video is arguably the greatest metal music video ever.
