Lars is one of the few guests who has the ability to combat Bill's constant interrupting. When he's been drinking or high he's even worse.

Np Lars style and cymbal work is unique and instantly identifiable. Thomas lang is an accomplished drummer but does anyone but drummers like myself give a shit? No. The answer is no. The band exists because of James downstrokes and Lars weird feel.

@@NPK476 wrong. He is one of the most influential drummers in music history. It’s called 80s disease. Music is not about chops. It’s an art not a sport. People succeed for sounding good not sounding impressive. Lars plays drums in a way that sounds good for his band and the songs end of story.

I met Lars at a signing back in 2008. Just a genuine good Dude. Glad he's still going!

Why does Bill cut off his guests and either change the subject, or inject his views? Stern is bad about that too. Totally ruins the interview.

That's awesome! I think they've always been like that, which is one thing that I like about them and will always respect about them. They've always done the best they could to stay in touch with fans. I've heard from multiple sources they would stay out in the cold 2 hours after a gig to chat and sign stuff. You can't fake that; and I think people have a pretty good barometer for sensing fakeness.

Good one! As a drummer, (started in 1988) Lars was my inspiration. Thanks Lars for your music. Thanks Bill for being Bill Maher!

I saw Metallica for the first time in NZ in the 90s, I went with my severely handicapped cousin, Hetfield did a really awesome tribute to them on their elevated platform, Metallica are on another level and I don't care if their new songs aren't what they were, it's an experience , everyone should see Metallica at least once🤟

People who criticize Lars' technical drumming need some perspective. He is, along with Hetfield, one of the most influential musicians in the past 40 years. And has been the vision behind Metallica's success. In that respect, he is without peer. While Hetfield is the "art" of Metallica, Lars is the "vision". He is a musical and artistic legend and deserves our respect.

I can't imagine anyone but Axel Rose being described in Lar's second eye-contact anecdote. A friend and I were music shopping on Melrose Avenue in Hollywood around 1990ish and walked past Axel in front of a restaurant. I didn't make eye contact but said loudly enough for him to hear "This place is a jungle!". He could have just ignored us but instead sneered back "Ha, Ha. Very fucking funny!".

Lars is so laid back, intelligent, and COOL. Mad respect. RTL and MOP are two of my all-time favorite albums...

Modern artist should forever be thankful to Lars for standing up to Napster back in the day and thus helping create the streaming services that pay artists of today.

I love the first four records, but I don’t know how you can like the first four but not like death magnetic or most of hardwired, and even the newest record? Maybe you haven’t really listened to them front to back but they have a lot of that magic that the first four have. Load/reload is definitely a different flavor but there’s some great songs there also. I implore you revisit these records with an open mind. Your denying yourself of some great songs.

Lars is a great interview. He has chilled over the years.

It's popular to hate on Lars, but dammit, the first 4 Metallica albums still rule to this day. \m/

Metallica has been my #1 band since I was 11 years old. It was 1993. I discovered the black album first, then their 80’s stuff. By the end of summer I had come to know their whole catalog. And I love almost everything they’ve put out since. They are 100% legends.

It's good that Lars still remembers the Napster incident. There was so much backlash of them selling out when Load and Reload came out and they all cut their hair. It was another time with the band. Everything had its place. Great interview.

I think the backlash was mainly due to the fact that it was a primitive version of "file sharing" (aka cassette trading) that built their fan base and made them popular before the internet existed and no radio station would play them) So the thing that built them he didnt need anymore so he wanted to complain about.

It wasn't that different than copying cassette tapes which I did for a lot of thrash bands in the 80's. But it was on a bigger scale. It was the industry's fault for being slow to adopt new technologies. I blame the record companies. As for Metallica, I actually did own the original cassettes. For a band I really like, I'll flip over the cash. Even if I didn't have a lot back then delivering newspapers.

Me and my friends, 15 years old in 1984 in Butthole Crick, Michigan never thought 'Fade to Black' was a sell-out song. We loved that song as much as any other on the album. 'Ride the Lightning' was for me in the early days was the first album I discovered smoking weed and letting the music sonically floor you. That album absolutely blew me away as me and my buddies took off from school at lunch to smoke killer weed and jam Ride the Lightning full blast in the car. At the time, there was nothing like it out there. Very soon followed the phenomenal Megadeth - Peace Sells and the Metallica's Master of Puppets right after. Metallica was the greatest band then and we saw them at the Kellogg Center two months before Cliff passed. They blew the roof off the place and were on a major roll that tour. They annihilated every city night after night. All the while Slayer and Anthrax filling the gaps. And then in the late 80s was a great time of so many thrash and death bands arriving. Fates Warning, King Diamond, late Maiden, Forbidden, Dark Angel, Sepultura, even Queensryche, early Cannibal Corpse and Morbid Angel, Death Angel, Flotsam, Kreator, man what a great time to be alive. Locally we had the great Thought Industry here. And Newstead was from here. I really miss the 80s. We were very fortunate to live through the entire metal scene. It will never return and it's sad AF.

I found when they discussed how they tour to be fascinating. I enjoy this podcast, but I wish Bill would interrupt his guests less. Also, It would be nice if he stopped bitching about young people. It's normal for young people to annoy the older generations, it's been happening since the beginning of time. In every generation, young people start off idealistic, get a dose of reality, and mellow out a bit. It's the circle of life.

I have been a huge fan of Metallica since i was 13 .. I am 42 and i have always enjoyed their music choices ...artists evolve and change over time ..that seems to be something people don't understand.. I am a musician as well and if i write something it's not thinking of pleasing anyone in particular but my own desire to make the music i want to hear...they've always done that...ALWAYS!!

Finally, Bill has a guest who talks more than he does and does not allow any interruptions. It is quite comical to see Lars employing the same techniques Bill uses to dominate ‘conversations.’ Lars is well known as the voice of Metallica because he never shuts up, while James is the creative heart. This was a very interesting session.

I don’t agree with all of Bill’s takes, but I do respect him because he seems to be one of the few people out here at least trying to call it down the middle. Was a HS kid (& learning guitar) doing a job one day around '85 when they came back from their first big European tour and got to meet them. Epic story.

i really enjoyed this and have the utmost respect for Metallica. Great to hear him talk about the investment they make in themselves to keep the band together. Being on the road damn sure isnt easy.

I Saw Metallica in San Diego at Brownsfield in 1994. Great Band I was only 16 years old lot of Bikers there Mosh pits. But Lars is down to earth. Bill puts everything in perspective Bill is a badass. 👍

TRUE STORY , with Napster I had been making audio cd's for work, I was a nurse in a nursing home. I took requests from some of the people who could recall the music they liked. A lot of Big Band requests and after the Napster melt down I couldnt do it for free anymore. I was so bummed.

What an amazing life. I was just thinking about and commenting on Metallica's good music and thinking about Lars in the unforgiven video looking like he's enjoying playing the music. I've always wondered how bands could have synergy and harmonize so well together. They must enjoy the music and process of playing it. I always wanted to be a singer since childhood and for several years now I change song lyrics to more be more positive and write my own songs out of the blue. It and music make life much more tolerable to wonderful. Thanks Bill , producers and crew plus Lars/Metallica. For having open back to and forth dialog and guests that you don't always line up with politically or spiritually and ethics wise. It's always better to talk and get along than just hate those different than you. 🙂 Spiritual love, good and truth to all of those deserving. Great stuff Bill and Lars!!

Those who say Lars is a bad drummer chase perfection. Metallica's sound has always been about being frantic and Lars' drumming is the one creating that. It's like Ringo Starr in The Beatles. He didn't play what 99% of most drummer would have done but it created the Beatles sound. Rock and Roll is all about standing out, doing your own thing and Lars has most definitely done that.

I like Lars and still buy metallicas shit but Lars and Kirk both have gotten lazy and they’re playing has not developed over the years. I’d probably get lazy on my instrument too if I’m their shoes. Ringo also didn’t play on a ton of studio tracks. Bernard Purdy himself did 21 of them between 62-66.

Dropped everything and watched this immediately.

Bill I’m a big fan. Love Club Random. Your mom probably said this growing up…when you have a guest…make it about them. If she didn’t ever say this…it’s still good advice.

They were a bit lighter than most of what I used to listen to, but the first five albums are so good. The Black album had been the last that I really loved, but the last 2 have been much improved over the previous 4 (imo)

I agree 5'8 since high school. Mainly when they checked for scoliosis??? Curved spine thing. I'm 33 now. Recent measurements I was 5'7. Metallica! Can't wait to see them again!

Anyone who plays guitar likes metallica enough said. I got back into them about 3 years ago and never got bored. Ended up learning a solid 20 of their songs back to front, bought the esp iron cross and a mesa boogie rectifier.

If I live to be 90, I'll still be listening to and loving Metallica.

Rush is the best example of a band who stayed together cohesively.

Much respect to Mr. Ulrich- great career! Integrity matters. Though I know very little of their catalog (radio) I respect them for the work ethic & value of artists being compensated! Come on people, pay the artists.

Loved the Dylan analogy! My dad was at Newport Folk Festival that day, and said it was a really cool surprise.

On a similar note to what Lars said about ego in bands, I recently did something related to work, and it involved a music theory lecture on the Beatles, and that guy said that one overlooked things about Ringo is that he was a good drummer and writer (I'll take it from the music theory guy, lol), but he didn't have a big ego, and that gave Paul and John more room to move about. Like, a drummer with a massive ego would have doomed them to fall apart even faster, according to him.

Their first two albums were their best showing. Crazy how young they were….

Not a wild-eyed head-banger fan of Metallica but as these guys are around my age and have stuck it out together this long, they have my respect.

Interrupting celebrities: I once interrupted Arnold/Maria at the Rose Cafe' in Venice. Walked right up to their table. Handed Arnold a note.
