Larry Holmes: Mike Tyson is Bigger & Stronger, Roy Jones Shouldn't Even Do It (Part 14)

Ойын-сауық

Part 15: • Larry Holmes on Visiti...
Part 13: • Larry Holmes on Retiri...
Part 1: • Larry Holmes on Droppi...
--------
In the latest clip, Larry Holmes gave his thoughts on the upcoming exhibition bout between Mike Tyson and Roy Jones Jr. The boxing hall of famer stated that both men will be competitive but Tyson's chances of winning will decrease as the fight goes on due to fatigue limiting his power. Holmes also stated that Roy's best shot at winning will be to box Tyson and avoid trading blows. Despite liking both fighters, Holmes believes it's not a good idea for the two boxing legends to compete in the ring at their advanced age.

Still not getting enough in my opinion. It's sad to see that a man who spent 40+ yrs married to his wife, made his way to the top with no leg-up against all odds, never looking down on people to feed off his ego, retiring rich with all his functions, and overall just simply an amazing human being with values of integrity. He is basically the polar opposite of what the Mike Tysons and the Alis and the Leonards and many more... Love you champ.

@ I have no idea what a casual fan is & what a real fan is. Do real fans go to the fights, read the trade papers & spend a fortune watching every ppv fight, subscribe to all the different networks....because that is very difficult nowadays? & is a casual just a geezer who takes a few beers round his mate's house every time there's a big fight on the telly?

@Juan carlos Often, fighters, champions aren't fans of the history of boxing.......it's just business & that is why they are prize-fighters. Tyson has an encyclopaedic knowledge of boxing history & talks with genuine warmth, emotion & respect about champions. Yet talk to Wilder/A.J etc & they know very little. Lennox LEwis, for instance, never mentions boxers but will yabber on about how great bruce lee was as a fighter lol

Mike was made for heavyweight. Dude was 220 pound powerhouse at 19 years old. Just because he's short doesnt mean he's small. He's a tank. Larry was right, Mike was able to take big shots from big dudes and it took many shots from much bigger guy than Roy in order to stop Mike. Mike being 54 will not be much of an adventage for Roy cause Roy himself is 51.

Yeah and i think Roy has more miles on him because he has never really retired, and he's def been rocked way more times than Mike. I just don't see this ending well for Roy Jones. Mike is just naturally a much bigger, stronger man. I just hope Roy doesn't get hurt, he shouldn't be doing this fight PERIOD.

Roy's legs are f*cuk:d seriously how's he going to move out of mike's way. I know roy's not going to try and go toe to toe with Mike. Don't think he has a choice here. His knees are gone bro.

You're right. he is Roy Jones which means he's not got a chin no more. a light breeze might knock him out now. Roy loves to proof people wrong and entertain. so he'll accept this challenge at this age. he had a much better chance when he was a legit heavy weight champ but not now. but he ain't no fool. Roy can dance if he wants to and just frustrate Tyson diving in and out

Ha you must be a young buck. Maybe 50% after his stem cell treatment. Power does go. The thing is even a 20% Jack Dempsey can knock out the average guy barefisted, that's why incidents like that happen. I saw someone try to mess with Mike when he was in his 40s. Mike knocked him out with just a jab. As to Roy, I don't know but he's gotten his butt kicked a lot. He ain't no civilian, but if he's wise he'll get some quick pointers from Mayweather and try to win on points.

Who wouldn't put him in the top 10? Roy at HW against Mike isn't too different to Spinks fighting Holmes from LHW & winning twice, or Holyfield at HW, or Moorer from LHW to HW. Spinks won, Jones won, Moorer won, Holyfield won. Everyone is watching the Tyson videos & thinking he's 20 again....how fast he looks, how fit he looks, how hard his punches look.....but the real facts of the matter is that mike is 54, he's a stoner & he looks in shape because of the PEDs he is taking.........the video sessions just show mike throwing the combos he has thrown in infinite repetition every time he is in the gym, they are muscle memory & obviously, not responsive, reactionary or targeted like they will need to be against a live, real opponent.

I think it's really dangerous for both Tyson and Jones, excpet if they are REALLY well prepared, cause they're old. I'm not sure it's a vey good idea. Most of the boxers end their life with brain damage and dementia. It's sad but true, boxing is a tough game.

Roy is a technical fighter and Tyson is a brawler ... If they go the distance Roy has a chance, 1st 3 rounds are crucial for Roy. Tyson will live in his head rent free if he lands a hook or uppercut.. Maaaaannnn

I think Roy is going to come in around 210 to 212 lbs and I think Mike will come in around 220 lbs. so Mike will only be slightly heavier for this contest. But surely Mike is probably a fair bit stronger plus he fought his entire career around the 218 to 230 lb range so this is definitely his weight class.

Mike took serious beatings before finally going down, I'm not talking about the end of his career though where he just laid down. Lennox Lewis took some rounds to finally put him away. Roy doesn't have that power at heavyweight, and we seen Roy get 1 hit and his chin shatter. If Mikes serious, Roy won't get out of the first round, first 2 rounds. Even a solid light heavyweight champion, one of the greats, Bob Foster who had a left hook that had serious power couldn't deal with Frazier/Ali at all. Only a few heavyweights can have a career like Foreman or Larry had, they're tough as nails and their skill never really went away, and in Foreman's case, he picked up something extra in his second career, patience and trying to set people up. In his first career he'd try and literally kill you lol.

Yae, it took Lennox 100+ clean punches to put him down, and its 2002 version of Mike. Lennox was 250 pound guy while Mcbride won by using his weight leaning on Mike every round. Roy doesnt have any adventage in this fight. He's only like 3 years younger , similar height, less heavier, no punching resistance.

As someone who's followed boxing since the 80's, let me tell you Larry Holmes is one of the greatest heavyweights of all time. Prime for prime he would of beaten the likes of Tyson, as his movement and jab was too good, that's how good Holmes was. Now lets talk about Tyson. In my opinion Mike Tyson is the best come forward boxer I have ever seen, technically even better than Joe Frazier and Sonny Liston. It's just a shame Tyson's mental strength was never as good as his ability, as he likely would of gone undefeated. The only boxer that could of stood a chance in beating Tyson in the 90's was Lennox Lewis. Prime for prime, lennox and Tyson would of been great. Unfortunately I can't forget the tears I shed when Tyson declined and lost to the likes of Williams and mcbride. He's certainly won't be nowhere near the boxer people remember. The problem for Roy is he's fast enough to beat Tyson, but Roy seems to have a bad habit of backing up and fighting on the ropes. He can't do that against Tyson, because even though Tyson is older, who will get tired quick, he's still a humongous puncher with supreme leverage in his punches.

@K Gehringer The 90's was one of the greatest heavyweight periods. It was Tyson's 80's that was in a boxing decline. In the 90's you had holyfield, bowe, mercer, Foreman, lewis, tyson, even moorer was a very good pumped up light heavyweight. In the 80's you had Holmes, Spinks and Tyson. Even then Holmes was in his upper 30's by the time Tyson got to him, and spinks was a great pumped up light heavyweight. Tyson saved the 80's heavyweight boxing as it was badly weak and not entertaining, that's why the middleweights of the 80's were taking the limelight.

@K Gehringer The amount of heavyweights in a certain period doesn't mean quality. You're telling me that the 80s heavyweights were better than the 90s Kid? Name me all these great cluster of 80s heavyweights? This will be fun.

@@ghanahumber937 The only fights Lewis ever lost were fights he was to complacent in. In the rematches he completely outoxed those opponents. I'm not saying he would beat Tyson, i'm saying Lewis was good enough and mentally strong enough to always cause tyson problems. I'm not sure what you mean by David Tua. Lewis outboxed Tua.

The only way Roy will win is if he uses his speed correctly; He gotta move faster than his step. He gotta anticipate correctly. He gotta strike faster. He gotta move faster than Mike so if he gets hit, the impact won't be as much as it would be if he was standing still. He Gotta Find His Soft Spot. If he can control his breathing and focus while doing all of these, his stamina will last longer. He gotta make it fast or Mike's gonna eat him alive.............. I Think Mike's Gonna Win

I really feel bad for Roy Jones. Perhaps Roy Jones is doing it for the money as well as something from his bucket-list. Mike Tyson doesn't even have to go for Roy's head. The body shots alone will probably damage Roy. There is no way this is going to be an Exhibition fight. At least not in the traditional sense. Now that I think about it, Roy is definitely doing it for the money. He has got to know he is not winning this fight. He may be praying for a miracle and hoping it will be a draw. But, there is no way Roy is winning this fight. I really like Roy Jones but, Larry Holmes is right. Jones should not have taken this fight.

Speed goes before power. RJJ speed is gone and with it his elusiveness. MT game is not speed and elusiveness but swarming inside power. So MT has lost some of his game but RJJ has lost a lot of his game. And then there´s the reason for weight classes - not giving punishment but absorbing punishment. Hope RJJ doesn´t get hurt bad.
