LARRY CARLTON - MR. 335 PLAYS FUNKY BLUES

Музыка

LARRY CARLTON plays funky blues. Heerlen, The Netherlands, November 8, 2013.
This is an old Crusader's tune called "My Mama Told Me So" (thanks Lee Hodgson and Jon Hanson for your info!).
Please select "HD" for High Definition quality. The music was also recorded with my camera, I hope the result is fairly ok.

Frédéric Jacquet Thanks for your reaction, Frédéric. Well, of course we hope that Larry will stay among us for many years to come and can keep playing live as long as possible! But when artists like Larry have passed away I will keep listening to their recordings and watching their videos. My biggest worry is: will real quality music made by real musicians like Larry exist in the future? Look at the music which is popular now: the music industry is dominated by hip hop and dance music. Well, in my opinion hip hop artists and dj's aren't real musicians. And those non-musicians have driven the real musicians to the background. I'm 57 years old now and many of my music idols have already passed away. Are they replaced by new talents? Have you witnessed the rise of new supergroups like Led Zeppelin, Queen or Pink Floyd? And jazzrock or fusion doesn't exist anymore! Well, I will fight until my last day to make the world not forget that there is or once was very good music, real music, played by fantastic real musicians like Larry Carlton!

They are really classy players to say the least. Lately I've become obsessed with Jack Pearson. He's just stellar and I keep looking for a performance featuring JP with Larry or Robben -- I think the combination would be killer!

This from the greatest jazz funk blues album i ever done heard in my life. The Crusaders Those Southern Knights. Will always remind me of 1976 when as a teenager growing up in Fiji, i was blown away by the quality of the music from this, years ahead of it's time album, and the musicians skill when i first heard it. All those years ago, And Still The Greatest. Thanks 4uploading S.S.S.

Robben Ford is a very good guitarist, too. And he's also a master of the blues, like Larry. I think Larry is the greatest master of the blues guitar, that's why I like him so much. And (one of) his most impressing live performance(s), to me, was the concert he did together with Lee Ritenour in Tokyo, 1995. Fantastic! Watch it on KZread.............

@Cicliste C: sorry, my reaction took a while ;-) Best wishes for the new year......as Larry says "time goes fast, man". Yeah, Larry is just a genius. And he is so all round, he could do anything on the guitar, if he wants. But his strong point is that he's a personality, he's 100% himself, pure, sincere, kind, down to earth. No gimmicks, he doesn't need to "show". Those are the great ones! I remember his live performance (on KZread) with Steve Lukather, also a gifted guitarist, but with a much louder and fatter sound. First comes Steve, wow, really amazing, he has some show but plays really well, with feel, it's the man's style. I thought "Pfff, now Larry has to come, I'm glad I'm not in his shoes". There he is: down-to-earth-Larry! But with self-confidence! No show, no gimmicks..........he plays with HIS sound, the Larry Carlton sound.......loud enough, sure! But not made fatter to keep up with Steve.......it'd be easier to impress.......but WOW WOW WOWWWWW............there's Larry.......mr.335 himself......the only one.......as bluesy as hell, I mean heaven........builds up his solo.......he plays from his heart, from his TOES.......the best blues player in the world......and Steve knows it! He is impressed!.........but Larry doesn't give a shit about it........he goes on playing and enjoying, being himself, coz there's only one Larry Carlton.......who doesn't have to prove anything...........Those are the ones!.........

SixStringSurfer.... Your Spot on!! I saw Larry Carlton in concert in San Diego after he recouped from the gun shot and... he came walking out on stage in a Hawaiian shirt, faded levi's, no socks and blue tennies. He was grateful to be back on tour... he was grateful to be anywhere he told us. It was late in the afternoon and close to sunset over San Diego/Shelter Island, there was a warm breeze and then... and then... the music started AND Larry Carlton did his MAGIC. Absolutely the best concert I have ever been to... beautiful bay with sunset, chilled white wine, sailboats docked next to the event and appreciative listeners enjoying the best live jazz by Larry Carlton AND my sweetie next to me. I'll NEVER forget it......................SUPERB!!!!

Hi - I was at that concert (New Morning, Paris) and thought exactly the same thing as you. The contrast between the two was terrific and Larry was ... well Larry. Steve Lukather's enormous love and respect for Larry was one of the things that most struck me about that evening. He is the same as all of us in his love for this great musician.

Larry is a gem. Had a chance to chat with him at the Ventura Theater years ago. Just a regular guy. Robben Ford is cut from the same cloth. I had not personally met Robben before, but at a studio session, I run into this guy getting coffee - jeans, t-shirt, quiet, nice, polite. New guy to the studio. I was surprised to realize this was the Robben Ford. I had a chance to sit in a session with him for 8 hours. The cat never repeated the same idea twice in that entire session. The great ones let their playing make the statement for them. They don't need to "sell" it through personal affect.

I have seen that vid and I think Lukather was intimidated as he knows Larry is a far superior musician, not just a superior guitarist. Not having a go at Lukather as I have massive respect for him also.
