Just a little warning: while copper and lead have been traditionally used for pipes and even silver has been used to store liquids, they are all heavy metals and not chemically innert. Especially acidic liquids will dissolve metal ions and we know from home brewing that copper can stain the product and alter the taste. If you do it regularly, it can even impact your health. Else, a beautiful gadget.
@isaacschmitt4803
2 жыл бұрын
Very true. This has come into light lately with Moscow Mules and their copper mugs, though the main point of concern with that is the amount of *time* the acid is in contact with the copper. For a quick coffee brew, it might be fine, though if/when I make my own, I'm definitely going with a different pipe material like aluminum or something.
@edi9892

@@isaacschmitt4803 Aluminium has gotten a bad reputation recently too... Maybe, you put in some more money and work with gold. LOL
@raenfox

@@edi9892 Good idea. Doesn't need to be solid gold, you could just use the copper tube and gold-plate it.
@edi9892

@@raenfox AFAIK, that's fairly easy as copper and gold mix readily. Thus, it's not like trying to put gold on plaster or wood.

@@isaacschmitt4803 Plastic tubing would probably be best, as any metal tubing capable of handling the heat, without being too heavy, or a health risk, is going to be too expensive to make this reasonable. Steel straws, would be my only other suggestion, but im not sure how well they would hold up to the kind of heat needed for this.

As a woodworker, leatherworker, nerd and coffee drinker this is one of the coolest projects ive ever seen!
For those wanting to be extra alchemical, I would add to your kit some butterfly pea tea. Use on its own or with another, pale coloured tea. If you brew that, it comes out blue. If you then add an acid (e.g. lemon juice) with an appropriate dropper, it will turn red. Nice little bit of extra magic.
@AriThecraftydragon

That's neat. Thanks!
As someone who has messed with alcohol burners for decades, there is that efficiency factor you spoke of. The sweet spot for most alcohol burners is right at 1" above the burner. So a pot stand is usually used along with wind shield as they are VERY ineffective in any wind.
@OwhatOtoOcallOmyself

Thanks for this! Once I make it I will include a windshield!
So, quick tip. For that homemade burner, you can actually put a cloth or something like that inside the main chamber to suck up some of the fuel, making it to where there isn't that much more of a mess if you spill it, and it'll increase the duration of the burn time
I genuinely thought you had bought a kit from a look at the thumbnail. This set looks nice as hell
Cool idea. With two one-way siphon tubes, butterfly pea tea instead of coffee, and some powdered lemon, you could get a "potion" which changes color after it returns to the original bottle.

First time ever watching one of your videos and am thoroughly impressed. As an avid coffee and tea drinker, who ALSO happens to be playing an alchemist in a LARP it's perfect. I do plan to build it once I have the means. It is amazing.
That FMA reference at the end though... truthfully, this is really cool. Just might have to make one of these.

This is honestly so cool. I have a friend who is practicing wiccan, and I'm sure they would love the little "coffee spell" detail on the lid.
This is the single coolest craft build video I've ever seen! In fact, it's probably one of the coolest video I've seen on KZread. Period!
Nice. Not realated to LARP, I've been trying for years to figure out a good way to convert a travel bar into a self contained coffee station. I use a vintage Trav-L-Bar for my alcohol, and it's always a hit when I bring it to gatherings. I've got a spare, but haven't quite figured it out yet -- I usually use an aeropress and hand grinder, but hot water is tricky. Nice solutions to that!
I came to this channel for the leatherwork, I stayed for the brilliance. Incredible build sir, many kudos.
Only thing I would have done differently would be to add a leather or otherwise carrying handle/strap. Great vid as always!
I'm more into leatherworking than larp, but I do have a soft spot for neatly arranged trunks. And as far as I'm not sure whether or when I'll try this inspiration, I do love watching the videos for sheer pleasure of seeing your enthusiasm. :)
no wonder this man is always so eccentric, hes got coffee brewing stations from glass bottles
My god. The demonstration won me over completely. That "magical" back-and-forth is so cool. Beautiful, flashiest brew imaginable and probably more than decent coffee.

I love that you explain the science behind how the siphon coffee pot works as well as the creation of your kit. I've been looking for plans that are easy to follow to make a siphon coffee pot myself and I love this. My wife also wants one for making tea
As a leather worker and a SCADIAN this has been added to my GOING TO BUILD LOST. thank you
I'm preparing for my next LARP character, an alchemist and medic and OMG, this is just what I was looking for in terms of how to fill my beautiful alchemist box!! Thank you for the inspiration, and my husband and I loved it!!
This is such an awesome project I am totally going to have to build my own portable coffee kit
Gotta admit, the reverse suction was just awesome to see. I was so worried (inefficiency worry me lol) that you had another step you would have to do to filter it, but it being just a natural result of taking off the heat it awesome!
A little trick I learnt as a technician, bung up one end of your pipe with a bung then fill the pipe with fine sand tapping the sand down to get it tightly packed then when you have only enough room to jam in a bung in the other end you can now gentle bend the pipe to suit your needs. The second things are to do with the finish on your wooden box. A friend of mine renovates furniture, as you can imagine when the woodworm has been through your chair for lunch some of the wood ends up unusable, so of course you make a replacement part. Apparently the thing a lot of people don't realise is that without the worm holes in the wood the new part won't match. The solution is to get a disk of wood about the size of a one cent piece and put seven panel pins, randomly, all the way through so that you have a little disk to tap randomly over the surface of the wood to give the effect of woodworm. the other thing you can do to age your wood is to wax your wood, don't be mean with the wax, and instead of polishing it back with a cloth polish it back with fine wire wool. This will give that lovely effect you get on aged wood where the grain has swollen and been naturally rubbed back down and you get that slight rounding to the wood grain edges.
