Lark Voorhies | Memory Lane: The Cool Like That Fashionista

Музыка

I loved the dance scenes Lark Voorhies did with Michael Jai White and Dwayne Martin in the 1999 movie Mutiny so much so that I thought one day I had to do an edit of. And I did!
So, early last year I was listening to some songs my mother loved, reminiscing on the good times listening to her sing these oldies but goodies. A song by the incomparable Minnie Riperton played, and all I could hear myself say, "I got to mix this." I then searched to find what other song would blend well with Minnie's vocals, and in came Digable Planets' Rebirth of Slick (Cool Like That). The perfect background music to lay Minnie's vocals on, and so this remix was born.
Once the remix was done and, I was able to find time in between my busy schedule to put together the edit, I just knew I had to add the dance scenes with Lark, Michael, and Dwayne. I did not stop there. I also included dance clips of incomparable and elite performers such as Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson, Dorothy Dandridge with the Nicholas Brothers, Cab Calloway, James Brown, and Sammy Davis Jr.
This edit is reminiscent of a time when dancing was alive, carefree, and fun or, at least, that is what I was trying to capture. You can also see clips of Digable Planets throughout the edit, to pay homage to their ingeniousness in engendering such an old style, yet futuristic, jazzy, free flow sound. And of course, the incomparable Minnie Riperton is also featured in the edit.
Incorporating the dance scenes with the fashionista and crew as well as with those great performers--and topping it off with a gem of a remix with the incomparable Minnie Riperton and music from the Digabale Planets--is purely icing on the cake!
I hope you all enjoy!

The clips of dancers paired well with this beautiful, emotionally layered song. In context of the collection of videos, this one added a different flavor to the depth. The tone reminded me a bit of interviews with Janelle Monae on NPR, particularly her latest, with Ayesha Roscoe from 4/17/22 , about ner new collection of stories called, " The Memory Librarian", which was rooted in her album, also diacussed with Terry Gross on, " Fresh Air" in '20. In part of both, she discussed her album, " Dirty Computer". Monae reflected on taking care of one's mind, and how the brain is a data center that stores a collage of experiences that must be processed with rest and creativity. Lark Voorhies's resiliency, perspective, and acquired knowledge is worth consideration and respect.

The advocacy for people was the highlight of the article referenced here in context toward cultural sgifts of perspective. ( *Disclaimer: To be clear, I believe that we continue to learn about mental health, which is similar to physical health: Some challenges are temporary, and some are chronic, some are from injury, and some are from genetics. When it comes to humanizing people living with mental health conditions, there is certainly room for improvement. -The same goes for accurate diagnostic tools to reach more effective treatments. Even so, although this author makes fair points about client rights and consideration to their safety, I do not think that experiences might be "cured", but perhaps go into remissions. For instance, arthritis, migraines, and multiple sclerosis can all flare up sometimes, but people living with them can learn to treat themselves with care and find support when that happens. Some medications might work better than others, or mileage may vary. Even so, they are not at fault, and their perspective is still valid. Healing is not always returning to the past plateau, and can include adaptations for new paths). Dr. Susan Swim's recent article in Nov. '22, was emphasizing the importance of " collaborative recovery". There is also a website called, " Now I See A Person", which focuses on care that honors that people are more than just a medical diagnosis. The article was titled, " Shedding The Limits Of ' Severe Mental Illness' Labels". ( *This "AllThingsLark" channel was another reminder that Lark Voorhies is a whole person, with her own past and her own future. With trusted support , she can continue to create in new ways, and has much to contribute. Thank you for showing that : )

@@allthingslark Thank you for your kindness and patience, as it took me a bunch of words to explain what I hoped to communicate. This response has been edited in hindsight to clarify. Lots of people working towards change were mentioned, with the goal to widen the view of possibility. Maybe one day, much like an autoimmune disease like diabetes, learning to live well and accept mental health conditions will be only a piece of someone's story, and not the entire identity other people see. ( Understood, you are not obligated to check these out, or keep the comment up, if you find it distracts from your goal.) Advocacy groups like, Bring Change 2 Mind, co-founded by the Close family, addresses stigma and research. Interviews like that given by Keris Myric and Brandon Staglin on NPR on 3/20/22 where people were speaking for themselves, and the whole 5- min clip expanded on new discoveries from wider research about connections between autoimmunity and mental health also help navigate different ways of thinking about care. I had a different diagnosis than a loved one, but understood his frustration with feeling blocked and judged by a label and how that hurt. Jac Den Houting's TEDx about autism, and how society needs more researchers who live with it, because much like the game we call "telephone", information sometimes gets mixed ^ up as it circulates. This concept could also be applied to mental health movements for better insight to counter, as she put it, " the social model" of disabilities, by having more direct conversations between people, instead of indirectly about them. Elyn Saks was able to explain in her memoir and TEDx, how her pivot from studying law to teaching mental health law was influenced by personal experiences, too. Another pioneering professor, Dr. Kay Redfield Jamison, and filmmaker, Paul Dalio, have teamed up to do interviews numerous times. One was with Brandon Staglin as well, actually, though Dalio's stage name for poetry slams was used, Luna. About five minutes before and after the 30 minute mark is my favorite. ( ^ To put someone on the spot is not fair, and I tried to change the language here, in kind. I do not believe anyone owes the world details of their personal experience. As an actress, writer, and artist, this person brings stories to life. That is certainly good enough. For someone to simply persevere is a gift of hope and resilience.)
