I was born and raised in Dubai and let me tell you this is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to exotic animals being sold. I am a firm believer that wild animals belong in their rightful habitat and NOT in cages. Sure some of the cages are clean and maintained well, but it's quite sad to see overcrowding in some of them as well. Its all about the status you hold and how well you can 'flex' that, which started the exotic trade. I have visited this place a few times and truly feel for all the animals that are caged up for days. The ones that get sold are considered the 'lucky ones' because God only knows what happens to the ones that aren't sold. When asked, every store owner says the same thing "they go back to the farm". It is just heart breaking to see this being done in one of the most developed countries in the world.

  • @foxy3711

None of these animals is lucky. Who knows who buys these and if the owners will provide a suitable habitat for them. I highly doubt that you can cover the needs of most of these animals in a desert like Dubai. And for each sold animal, another will be "produced" on farms or taken from the wild under cruel circumstances. How can anyone think it's a good idea to buy dogs from puppy mills in Ukraine, separate them from their mothers and transport them over thousands of miles to a desert?! I don't want to know how many animals die before they even reach the shop windows.

@@foxy3711 exactly!! God knows what happens to the ones that dont get sold... i really do not like thinking about it. And on top of that they do the same for exotic animals, where does it end ? I only frown upon the people keeping animals that they know are unhappy. Conservation by commercialization is key. With out these animals in captivity a disease could wipe out wild populations over night and we'd have no way to help. Also before you say let zoos keep them there's not enough zoos to save them all and most zoos rely and private keepers for their information.

Aw, don't be hesitant of snakes and spiders, they're more often than not, very chill animals. Those big morbidly obese snakes are albino burmese pythons, and /wow/ is Dubai overselling them. They're typically around 1-8k for big females like that, and around 300-500$ for hatchlings. They get to be the fourth largest snake in the world, and if you socialize them right, they are /puppydog/ tame. They are wonderfully passive and very lazy, so they'll just vibe on your lap most of the time and fall asleep. Pretty sure they couldn't eat a person, even if they tried. If you've seen a big snake in a movie or a show, it was very likely a burm. Dogs and Cats in those containers typically only stay there for a day or two, then get rotated out for other animals and brought back to larger holding buildings with bigger rooms for them. At least that's how it works in the USA, especially for dogs. If anything, the questionable part may be where they're sourcing them from, since pure breeds are often mass produced in puppy mills all over the world, so hopefully they come from reputable breeders. Most of these places look decently well kept though, and the animals pretty healthy, despite some overstocking. Meerkats must make horrible pets, but I guess when in a place where a lot of people own tigers and other big cats, that's not even surprising to see in a shop.

Burmese pythons and African Rock pythons and other kinds of pythons we’re accidentally released innthe Florida Everglades and they have decimated the native wildlife…to the point that now the snakes have eaten most of the food supply in the wilds and are moving closer to people, onto farms and into the suburbs, one snake attacked and ate 70 pound dog, a Husky! One python attacked and ate a deer. They eat chickens pigs , as well as calves and lambs and baby goats. If they can eat a deer, a 70 pound dog, and adult pigs then they can eat a child. There have also been attacks by pythons on humans , so they do see humans as a possible food source. They can be aggressive to humans and the African rock pythons are definately agressive.
