The amount of engineering that goes into designing and building a ship like this is mind boggling. When i was a kid a ship of this type, smaller obviously, came into Kahului Harbor on Maui and loaded an entire railroad. Not the cars, but the running gear, locomotives and steel rails. The captain and first mate operated the entire lifting apparatus, it was really amazing to see.

The engineering of this thing is insane, it's basically a mobile floating dry dock they flood the ballast tanks and the entire hull submerges with just those superstructure towers above the water, then another massive ship is manoeuvred over the submerged hull between the towers and the ballast tanks are pumped out again to lift the ship on top up out of the water.
