Wow, amazing that Teotihuacan in Mexico and Caracol in Belize at one moment were the most populous places in the world. The fall of Rome was really disastrous, same as Baghdad.

It's crazy how Istanbul appeared in the top 20 in 60 AD and disappeared in 1900... For 1840 years it remained in the top 20 cities in the world, truly remarkable!

In the golden age of China (Tang Dynasty), Xian is really wealthy and prosperous, many foreigners come to Xian to learn chinese culture and technologies. I have read parts of Joseph Needham’s Science and Civilization and so am well aware of Chinese inventions and technology. My point is that China has also borrowed from the West. Let us start with bronze metallurgy. Although this is somewhat controversial, on balance I think there was a stimulus from the West. The chariot was certainly introduced from the West-it appears suddenly at Anyang whereas it had long been employed on the Western steppes. Iron is also much later in China, although the Chinese rapidly surpassed Western iron technology. Glass also, although not much used, came in from the West. Buddhism from India was a huge influence on Chinese culture. Sassanian metalwork influenced Chinese. Chinese chess is based on Indian chess and Shuanglu 双陆and polo are originally Persian games. The pipa is a Western Asian musical instrument that came across the Silk Road. Silk, paper, the wheelbarrow, the compass, gunpowder, porcelain manufacturing, etc were all important Chinese inventions that influenced the West. Interestingly, it is likely that cobalt oxide used to paint on Chinese porcelain was introduced from Western Asia where it had long been in use. And once the Industrial Revolution got going the flood of Western influences was unstoppable.

@@malin5468 yes that is only a little bit compared what the Chinese invented, the thinking, the crafting, the building… etc.

It's interesting to see that it was almost impossible to maintain a city of over a million people before modern transport systems in the 1800s. Infrastructure and especially goods transport are the unsung heroes allowing even modestly sized modern cities of 1-5 million people to exist at all.

Exactly. Enough fresh food and enough infrastructure just couldn't provide for much more than a million people before the industrial age. Cities just sank into sewage, pestilence and starvation when they tried to get larger. London's exponential growth in the 19th century was the prototype for all global metropolises that were to follow but soon found itself completely eclipsed by them. For the first time in human history, hundreds of thousands of tons of food and fuel could flow into a city each day at a sustained rate using canals, railways, paved roads and steam shipping. The Victorians quickly realised they also need to build enormous clean water reservoirs and sewage systems utilising thousands of miles of pipework and driven by steam pumps. Revolutions in brick-making, concrete production, and mass produced steel provided the cheap, abundant buildings that these new cities demanded. Also, the advent of medical science saw new hospitals, surgical techniques, hygiene measures and medicines flood the market allowing more people to live longer. On top of all that was the mechanisation of agriculture and finally the application of artificial fertilisers via nitrogen fixation. Today, 85% of the world's population are alive _only_ because of these vast implementations of chemistry such as the Haber process. From where we are today, it is difficult to reconcile that just 200 years ago, the urban lifestyles we so take for granted today were not only absent, they were physically impossible.

The wealthiest countries in the world in terms of national income per capita are still within Western Europe and North America.

Europe has serious demographic issues, and they have basic basic problems like being entirely dependent on Putin for their natural gas.

Japan is an interesting one. Large economy but relatively low GDP per head of population with massive debt.

@@Kaiserbill99 Indias advantage is that it doesn't have to do any one thing to do well. They have multiple realms where they can do well. Otherwise it isn't that india is so great, just that everywhere else has such a dismal future because of demographic issues/non democracies.

The Spanish record that it was 4 times larger than Seville and comparable to Constantinople. I don't understand why it never even appears in this video until it became the Mexican capital.* *2) Kano suffered famines all throughout the 1800s (at least 10 separate famine years are documented) and thusly never had a population as large as claimed in this video. In fact the highest estimate I've ever found anywhere put it at 200,000 and that was the absolute highest. Making it the second largest city in the world after London with a population more than 15 X the highest estimate is very suspect here.* *3) Luanda never even reached 1 million in population until the 1980s so to see it here larger than Chicago (once the world's fastest growing city) in the early 1900s makes no sense whatsoever.*

Fascinating chart, and very interesting to see it put together like this! I would be interested to know how you decide on the city sizes though. I feel like some of these cities include the metro-areas/continuous urban area (as they should) and others include only the administrative city-proper, which doesn´t give a true reflection of the size. e.g. Los Angeles metro area is around 20,000,000 plus and so is bigger then New York, but according to this chart it is several positions down. Likewise, the Jakarta Metro Area is the second biggest on earth (I believe around 28,000,000), after Tokyo, but doesn´t even make it onto this chart. Likewise I was looking out for Tenochtitlan around the time of the Spanish conquest, as it was supposed to be one of the biggest cities in the world, but it also doesn´t make it onto this chart.

You are not Assyrian, you are not sumerian, you are not babylonian, you are not Hittite, you are not canaanite, you are not Phoenician. As for London, the figures at present depend on which boundary you choose, figures range from 6.5m to 30m in 2021. I suspect many other cities in this list are the same.

This video isn't even accurate. One that sticks out like a sore thumb in the early 1900s is Luanda, Angola. It's population is listed as being larger than the population of the entire colony was! It's listed at 5.2 million in 1940, when in reality it had 60,000 people. Kano, Nigeria is also inexplicably shown as one of the largest cities throughout most of the 20th century. With mistakes that glaring it's hard to take this video seriously.

Tenochtitlán population by the time spanish invaded in 1519 was estimated to be about 400,000 people. Lisboa had a terrible earthquake and tsunami in 1755. By that time it was estimated to have a population of about 300,000 people, 10,000 to 90,000 of which were killed in that disaster. None of these are reflected in this video.

I think that in that particular case they assigned country population to capital city population by mistake, which for an agrarian country makes a huge difference. Also Tenochtitlan, according to multiple sources, had some 400,000 inhabitants around 1500 (before the smallpox pandemic and resulting population collapse of the 16th century) making it the third/fourth largest city in the world at the time, certainly larger than Constantinople, and this is nowhere to be found here.

Interesting but context is very important here. I have been studying Ekistics for years and most people don't appreciate the difference between a 'city proper' and a 'metropolitan area' and even this varies from country to country. The list here (as stated) seems to be taking into account the whole Metro area. 36 million for example is the population of Tokyo Bay which also includes Yokohama, Kawasaki and Chiba alongside the 23 Special Wards of Tokyo 'proper' and they are all cities in their own right. Not surprised to see the figures at the end though. African cities like Kinshasa are exploding in population. Here in the UK, the 'City of London' is actually extremely small - about 8,000 people in the historic Square Mile. What is generally seen as 'London' is the 32 boroughs of the Greater London Metropolitan County which is about 9.2 million Interesting video. Thumbs up.

For sure, there's a ton of this in the US as well. Many cities that are technically small or medium but if you count the metro area are actually massive. I think for the most part looking at metro area is the sensible thing to do, since people living contiguously in an area is what we really care about here, not imaginary lines.

it seems to be arbitrary. Based on metro population, Jakarta Indonesia is the second largest city in the world with about 33.5M. New York @18M seems odd since the entire state is < 20M, and Albany + Buffalo + Syracuse = 3M... they must be including New Jersey numbers.

Yes, it is the metro area, if you can tell when you have crossed from Los Angeles to Burbank then you are doing pretty good, likewise between Tokyo and Yokohama. Same thing exists in the Ruhr valley in Germany, not particularly huge but there are like 10 small cities there, good luck with boundary finding.

@@jrus690 and likewise, if you can tell when you pass from Jakarta to Tangerang or Bekasi or Depok, it would be a surprise, and therein is another ~10M people. Its really quite funny. The NYC Metro area includes 34,500 square km to reach the population of 20M. Jakarta metro is only 6350 square km and has a population of 32-34M. The didn't count that, only the city. The population density in Jakarta metro is almost 2x of NYC metro.

Seguramente lo mismo que a la mayoría de las ciudades mayas que se abandonaron. Cuando las ciudades prevalecen durante siglos sin realmente cambiar sus métodos de sustento, serían testigos de climas cambiantes y estacionarios como las sequías o catástrofes climáticas pueden diezmar su fuente de alimento y basta con un par de años para decidan emigrar a otro lugar en busca de sustento. Si incluso en la actualidad hay ciudades que han pasado décadas de sequía, sobreviven gracias a que pueden traer el sustento de otro lugar gracias a los transportes modernos. En el pasado era imposible, la única opción era dejar todo atrás y buscar un nuevo lugar con buen clima.

Interesting. Having spent a lot of time in both Kinshasa and Lagos I don't believe either of those cities are stable enough to grow like that. They will come apart at the seams first.

probably a looooot of guesswork involved, especially when you go back to the BC times and the video is showing #s down to the 1 on all those cities lol, zero chance it is possible to be even remotely accurate when it comes to that. Still a cool video, and I imagine most of the #s are at least in the ballpark

A lot of these countries (including the ancient ones) had the bureaucracy to actually keep these records maintained, especially the Chinese which were sort of obsessed with it.

Everything pre bronze Age collapse (1156 BC?) will be speculation at best, and pure fantasy at worst. We know next to nothing about the cities in the Sumer city states (kingdoms) of present day Iraq, that is the 2900-2100 BC period. We have quite a bit more info of the Akkadians, Assyrians, Babylonians, etc, but still its speculation. Rome and Greece were the first well documented areas because they are apart of European and the America's history.

The destruction of Baghdad reported to the world population that time is now the equivalent of destruction of New York, Shanghai and London combined. @@Turkic_Soul no the city. It's called istanbul today, formerly constantinople, which was formerly byzantium. I know the "byzantine empire" never existed, but the city at one time did, hence how historians got their name for the eastern roman empire

São Paulo jumped from the 20th in 1962 with over 3 million to the 5th in 1979 with over 9 million. Still 5th now with 21 million. That's a huge increase

When i see Iraq and remember how they have beautiful country without no terrorism , people had great life and then american democracy came .

I'm from Nagercoil, Tamilnadu , Currently living in Germany . I recently compared the population of cities in both Germany and Tamilnadu and surprised to know that even with almost same area Germany is way ahead with number of cities . I lived in Nagercoil with a population of 200k but at the same time almost with the same population cities here in Germany are well developed . So how could that be possible . What should we implement here to improve the cities . Any idea?

You're missing Tenochtitlan. Largest city in the world back in 1521 AC. Spanish conquered that city and said it had 700,000 inhabitants.

To be honest diseases ravaged through the city before their siege. Tenochtitlan could likely have stood against that attack with the full population being healthy. This is why africa withstood and eventually gained independence while americans never did and are still basically forced to living in the badlands which make up 2% of their original lands. They could not have beat a city of 700 000, the diseases helped their devilish conquest

If these figures are accurate, I'm really happy that I'll be dead by 2100. That final Top 20 is straight out of a horror movie.

These are based on evidences. Dwarka is oldest stipulated till now but obviously there were many more ancient cities but there is no evidences discovered yet.

It's great to see our vijayanagara dynasty on the top, feeling proud being a Telugu man.

Surprised to see my hometown Shenyang on the list in the 16th and 17th century. It used to be the capital city of Manchu people before they moved the capital of Qing Dynasty to Beijing.

Yeah, most of the projections are wildly unrealistic. Malawi is landlocked, ethnically diverse and in the southern hemisphere - all highly detrimental to economic development. Even if Africa does somehow become the most populous and technologically advanced continent by 2100, I wouldn't expect Malawi to be one of the main benefactors.

@@retropaganda8442 Yes, I think the first Philadelphia was in Turkey, in the Hittite region of the ancient world, the name comes from the Greek that was the language of that time in the Turkish region, another similar name is Delphos of Greece that has etymological similarities with Philadelphia. It was in Philadelphia where one of the seven churches of the apocalypse, described in the christian's Bible, was located.
