Large Rifle Primer - Evaluating H4350 in .30-06 Springfield

In this video we test Large Rifle Primers with Hodgdon H4350 in .30-06 Springfield. We test the CCI- BR-2 and the FED-215M primers and evaluate the velocity response.

Notice how the hotter 215M not only yields higher velocities but also a flatter graph showing more consistent ignition with lower charge weights.

I am new to the channel but have been enjoying what you produce. Thanks. I have been casually reloading since 1984-85. More off than on the past decade. But I expect to get a refresher and learn a good bit from you and your guntuber buddies. I have a few questions I hope to find answers for in your vids.

IMO, there are still more data to collect in order to make a decision on primers. I'd zero on a charge for each primer and compare groups, velocity, SD and ES. Only then I would make a decision on primers. Still very interesting. You might convince me to buy different primers. Keep them coming.

I’d like to see you duplicate one of your next 10 shot velocity string tests with all the exact same components at the same time back to back. Curious to see how the 2 graphs would compare.

Really enjoy your reloading videos. I'm very new to reloading. I'm also going to be handloading for 30-06. In a previous video you talked about using magnum primers instead large rifle primers in extreme cold weather conditions, (which I'll be hunting in this November in northern Alberta. ) for more consistent powder burn rates. According to the reloading manuals this is an unsafe practice. I guess I'm looking for advice on weather to develop loads using magnum primers for my 30-06 for hunting in extreme weather conditions.

Hi Rod, While you are always responsible for your own loading practices. Generally you need to not use magnum primers with max loads. They will Likely have higher pressures. Just like anything else, start low and work up looking for pressure. You will see difference in velocities. I recommend you checking out this video: kzread.info/dash/bejne/dYujj6ZtYLCfiZM.html to see the differences the primers play in ignition and velocity. Best of Luck, BAR

If your calling both primers a tossup , why not go with the BR-2 cci. It stayed closer to your projection. THE GMM was high in vol but not as accurate. Depends what your doing again, hunting the GMM primer would do ok. If shooting match, the BR -2 has the edge.

Thanks you for your video, very informative chanel! Just a question/ a bottle in the sea of data... May be a bit of topic but not too far :), I try to develop a load for my 270 Bergara ridge (24'medium barrel) I would like to use the RL26 powder (pushing mostly 140/150grain projectiles) I bought the CCI200 Large rifle primer as standard ,since it's a relatively slow powder, would it be worth using some Magnum rifle primer like the CCI250? Or do I have my logic twisted wrong... Thanks

I have used magnum primers in applications that don't call for them, but I have always made sure you reduce your charge since the primers will probably be a little hotter.

Hey Marvin, I started reloading in '94 and a 30/06 was the first caliber I ever loaded for. I began with H414, which is the spherical powder, just like H380 is, but I (just preference) like the extruded powder better and switched over to the H4350 instead. Both powders shot extremely well in my gun. You can give it a try and see how well it shoots in yours and whichever shoots better is what I'd go with and never look back, but if neither satisfy your expectations, then you could start experimenting with other powders as well. I've never used H380 before, but my previous and my current 30/06, both like H4350,so that's what I've stuck with. I even use Hodgdon's website also, as they have alot of information to offer.

It is not a rimfire scope. It is just older like the rifle. It has handled the recoil of the rifle for its whole life. I will probably upgrade it for the next phase of testing but it still works.
