30-06 Insane Velocity! (Part 1)

Ойын-сауық

In this video I take a Winchester Model 70 to the range to try out the Winchester 190 gr ABLR. I test the velocity and accuracy, I also do a ladder test with 6.5 Staball. Hope you enjoy the video!

    Have you ever took a bore scope and look in the bore of that model 70 to see how it looks I had bought a Remington 721 at a pawn shop and it didn’t shoot it was also a 30-06 and I have a hand-load that generally shoots really good in my other 30-06 anyway to make the story shorter I took it to a friend who has a bore scope and I discovered that the barrel has longer rifling’s on the one side of the lead and shorter on the other side meaning the chamber wasn’t cut straight to the bore and as I understand it that if it is screwed up there they won’t shoot that is why I am re-barreling it to a 280AI I’m going to do it myself since I have never built my own before

    Good afternoon RW, Regarding that M70FW 30-06. Couple of things I noticed. First the placement on the front bag changed ever so slightly during the 3 shots. Not much of a change but those Feather Weights are notoriously picky. Might be the bedding, might be the barrel "whip". Some of them are frustrating, while others are just a joy to shoot. Secondly, if would have been interesting to see a 4th or even a 5th shot (I know you didn't want to waist the ammo). I say this because I've had FW's that needed a "fowling" shot. No matter how many dry patches went down that barrel, they still needed that first shot. If the rifle was left uncleaned it was fine. I never figured out if it was the thinnest of an oil film or what. Thirdly, I had M70FW's that are pickier about bulket weight than any other rifles I've owned. Maybe, for grins, throw some 150's, 165's, 200's and 220's at her to see what she can do. Or you just have a beautiful rifle that has a ghost living in her. Unfortunately the only answer to a haunted rifle is to spend her down the road to a new home. Or an exorcism. Good luck. Cheers, Jeff

    Wow, I’m pleasantly surprised you got better than box posted ammo. May have to snag some of these next time I see them. As for your accuracy, there’s a strong chance your barrel just doesn’t like those. Seating depth changes with tangent ogive bullets, such as the AB/ABLR, ELD-M/X, etc. Will yield little to no improvement. It’s a great way to chase your own tail and waste components. I’d try changing powder first.

    If you want accurate readings from your Chrony make side curtains from cardboard & attach to the guide rods with zip ties. The light has to come straight down so the shadow of the bullet passes directly over the skyscreens. Looks goofy works awesome . Not good on windy days .

    My thoughts as well, sometimes you you have to choose between velocity and accuracy. You don't usually get both. Also, I have gotten decent accuracy with the 190 grain ABLR @ .070" jump in a Browning X-Bolt,.300WM at close to maximum charge listed in the Hodgdon manual. However, when groups were fired in a minus 20° temperature change, groups opened up to 1 and a quarter inch. Still good enough for hunting to 300 yards with a steady rest.

    If I may, I would advise adjusting your shooting technique slightly. I shoot a budget Remington 783 in 30-06 with a 22" magnum contour barrel. My load at this time is 57.7gr of local Somchem S365 powder. Even after bedding the action and stock with a solid epoxy which added some decent weight to it, it still has some serious muzzle lift off the front rest. O couldn't get a group smaller than 2.5" at 100m. After adjusting my shooting technique by holding the rifle down in the position like I would be shooting it in a hunting situation, I drastically improved my groups and have recently settled on a 0.3" group at 100m. I would shoot those same 190gr ABLR factory loads again through the same Winchester M70 rifle, but just adjust my ahooting technique slightly. I'm almost sure you'd be able to get a sub-MOA group, as the group formed a nice triangle shape on the target.

    @ruanschmidt6207

    @@Marcus-jg4jb that's exactly what's happening. Because the rifle has a sporter barrel and is relatively light weight with that 22" barrel, it does generate a considerable amount of extra free recoil. I watched a video of "Desert Dog Outdoors - Load Development Tips" and he explained this very issue on that video. I took to his advice on the shooting technique he prefers off the bench with a lightweight rifle setup and has definetly improved my shooting experience. I highly recommend watching that video. It has a ton of good information which I believe can help any shooter who wants to improve their load development process.

    Never got great accuracy with accubonds testing in over a half dozen calibers with hand loads and ladder testing. .7/.8 at 100 was the absolute best. Never liked how they did on th8n skinned deer with broadside shots. Never opened up for a lot of energy dumping dropping in their track’s performance. All deer shoot with a broadside heart and lung shot either stood there after the shot or ran like they weren’t hit. Same shot placement with a good old ballistic tip will drop them in their tracks 99.9% of the time. It doesn’t shock me that it didn’t group with a darn. It seems like most bonded Boolits I’ve tried don’t group as good as cup and core. I think they just don’t expand enough inside the barrel, when going down the rifling to stabilize well enough for grouping.
