I really think there are two honorable mentions. Ship in a bottle (21313) for dumping 284 of the same piece into the bottle with a single step, and the already mentioned Roller Coaster (10261), which asks you to chain together 203 tiny chain links in one step. These aren't the most pieces in a box, but possibly the most you'll see (or deal with) at once.
@dropfish3109

not technically on the same piece but bonsai tree makes you do something similar to ship in a bottle where you dump 200 small pieces into one container.
@danielleanderson6371

@@dropfish3109 The bonsai does also have one hundred pink frogs you have to attach more or less all at once, so that's something, especially if you think more novel pieces get more credit than generic tiles, plates, and pins, which I do.

I don't really count ship in a bottle as you're literally just dumping a bag into the lego bottle, nothing is actually being attached. It's not tedious at all and can be done in about 5 seconds if you have the bare minimum of hand eye coordination. Whereas the looping coaster actually requires you to stick a bunch of pointy jagged chain lift pieces together, your hands feel raw once it's done

Would be interesting to compile a list of what the most used pieces are overall. Would be a lot of work. But could be done with computer image processing to scan through instruction manuals and deposit the tally in an excel sheet. Just wanted to clarify. If you could get pdf's of all Lego set instructions you could run a very simple image processing program over the index of all the parts in the set. That's just the first few pages and is very doable. I think what I originally said came off more as scan every page lol.

I'm about to start the robie set. It's hella expensive where I live so I build it on studio with the instructions for free. Can't put it on a shelf but it will be awesome as a wallpaper
I do like most of these construction styles better than a lot of the overly specialized large parts. I'm reminded of things like bionicle Piraka bodies where they had like 7 pieces for the entire torso and 4 of them were snaps. That's nice and easy to construct but what if I want to make something else out of that set? Probably the only alternative use for that huge part was like a limb piece or something. But then you need a build with limb segments about 11-13 studs long or something and very robust, and that's getting to the point where you would expect not to be using large premade parts as an entire limb segment.
