When Enrico Caruso, the most famous opera tenor of the beginning 20th century returned back to Italy with his much younger wife and his 3 years old daughter in 1921, he was seriously ill. He stayed for some time in a hotel in Sorrento, but died in Naples when traveling to his pulmonologist in Rome. The author of the song, Lucio Dalla, stayed exactly in the same hotel room Caruso had rented many years before and was told the story by the old owner of the hotel.

Caruso, is an italian song, written, composed and performed in 1986 by Lucio Dalla as a tribute to Enrico Caruso, the most famous tenor of his time (late 19th / early 20th century). He was the first global singing superstar It has very quickly become a classic of italia music and the biggest names have covered it (Julio Iglesias, Andrea Bocelli, Josh Groban, …. and of course Luciano Pavarotti). But for many, Lara's version is the best ever, as she was able, with her unique ability to convey the emotions of a song, to reveal the real sad story written by Lucio Dalla. I was told that Lucio Dalla himself, after hearing this performance, said that she made it her song and this is the best version he has heard from it. The story is about the last days of Enrico Caruso, he knows he is dying, and he is remembering all his career on stage and telling his much younger wife how much he loves her. For Lara, this song is really important as this is a kind of anthem for Italy, and she is so much connected to this country. She spent the first few years of her life there with her sicilian mother and grandma. Her husband is also sicilian.

To answer your question, Caruso was a great Italian tenor and Lucio Dalla (The author) wanted to dedicate a song to him. The curiosity is that he wrote it in the same room of a hotel in Sorrento where Caruso was staying. Lucio Dalla went 'there' because his boat had a fault while he was sailing near Sorrento, then he decided to stop at the hotel and when they told him that Caruso was staying there', he wanted his room, where he composed this song in one night.

Caruso was the first global superstar due to the phonograph record. He remains known and dearly beloved in both Italy and America. He died young. This homage imagines his last moments/thoughts/ reminiscences.

Just sublime….. I always cry listening to her sing. And no it’s about the famous Opera Tenor, Caruso, on his death bed, remembering his life on the stage and telling how much younger wife about it and about how much he loves her.

Enrico Caruso (*1873 in Naples, † 1921 ibid) was an Italian opera singer. He is considered the most famous lyrical tenor of the early 20th century and one of the most important singers in the world of opera. Caruso was famous for his baritone-like timbre and stage presence. In a performance of La Bohème he sang an aria for the suddenly voiceless bass so convincingly that no one in the audience noticed. Caruso established a new, exemplary style of singing in which the focus was not on beautiful performance but on becoming one with the character being portrayed. Caruso is the name everyone knows and to which every opera singer is compared. Those who have seen him describe the onset of his voice with the warm power of an organ. Caruso still holds the record of 863 appearances on the Metropolitan Opera stage. And it was Caruso who initiated the triumph of the record with his work. Caruso's generosity was legendary. For example, during his most successful years at the Metropolitan Opera, he gave almost all employees Christmas presents. His sense of humor was also famous. Again and again he joked with his stage colleagues, for example sewing up a sleeve of a coat that a colleague in La Bohème had to wear during the performance, or filling water in a discarded hat that someone had to wear in the performance. 3 years before his death he married the American millionaire daughter Dorothy Park Benjamin. With her he had a daughter, Gloria, at the age of 45. He died at the age of 48 from protracted pleurisy and blood poisoning. It is dedicated to Enrico Caruso, an Italian tenor. The song tells about the pain and longings of a man who is about to die while he is looking into the eyes of a girl who was very dear to him. The lyrics contain various subtle references to people and places in Caruso’s life.

Lucio Dalla was a great Italian composer, singer and multi-instrumentalist, born and raised in Bologna. His home is a museum and he is loved here, especially by his fellow citizens. It wasn't at all difficult to meet him around the city center: he was at home here.

So glad you've got rid of that pop shield you had on your mic that obliterated half of your face. It was big enough to use as a spit guard against hot oil in a frying pan! And far more distracting than an occasional plosive pop during a real-time reaction, where facial expressions often say more than words.
