This performance is one of the, if not the most legendary live performance in francophone music history…everybody remembers it almost 25 years later. Johnny was the biggest singer in France and invited Lara who just arrived in France a year earlier…she was the only female artist invited to that huge concert. Johnny considered Lara as the female version of himself.

Lara Fabian was the surprise guest here: this is a Johnny Halliday concert in Stade de France, in front of 80,000 in 1998. The song itself was a song made for him only, that he started to sing in 1976. He converted it into a duet for this concert for the first time I believe. He wanted Lara to shine so the mic balance was tuned to favor her belts vs him. The song itself was created as a parallel with an old classic french movie called “Le jour se lève” (1939) where the “heros” is barricaded in his house, surrounded by police, having murdered his girlfriend. Legendary perf. I am glad that english speaking world starts to discover this masterpiece. Kudo to you. Good job and react!

I am a huge huge fan of Lara (that’s why I subscribed to your channel) but don’t underestimate Johnny: he sold more than 110 millions records WW thru 79 albums during a 57-year career. He was the most admired singer in France, also aan enormous powerhouse, and considered as the Elvis of France. When he died in 2017, there were national funerals with 1M fans lined up and the french president and the 2 living predecessors paid tribute.

@@stephanieellis5399 yes she absolutely did. She is the absolute vocal powerhouse and she was the only one to support the power comparizon with him. Johnny said from her “she is me as a woman”. They had a project to do something big together again but his young wife was jealous and let it not happen. I am personally not a fan but Johnny was a legend in France since the 60s: just to give you an idea, he hired Jimi Hendrix, then not yet known, to support and open his concerts during a tour. That’s how the first scene from Jimi Hendrix Experience trio appeared to be in France.

@@ericsicard910 that comment of his could be seen as rather egotistical, but at the same time being saying to people, "look, if you love me, you'll love her her". It's sad (but somewhat understandable) that his young wife didn't have faith in her own marriage and was threatened...but I'd struggle not to be totally intimidated by Lara, too. Still, it's unfortunate. I'm glad they did this, at least, AND that it was televised. I'm so glad Johnny was gracious enough to share it with Lara and share Lara with us.

You was looking for Lara, but the biggest star was Johnny Hallyday. He was the biggest french star for over 50 years. He was influence by Elvis and became the french Elvis and was the one who brought rock and roll to France. You will follow Fabienne, but if you are curious about him, look for "L'envie" (the one with the japanese drums) or "Diego". But he have so much more. He was the only to be able to full the "stade de France" (biggest stadium at Paris). He also bring around 2 millions people around the Effel tour. I had the chance to see him 3 time in concert and it was just legendary.

Johnny Hallyday (1943 - 2017) is born Jean-Philippe Smet in Paris from a french mother and a belgian father. One day, he saw Elvis Presley in "Loving You" in a cinema and knew he wanted to become singer too. His first single came out in 1960 and it was the start of a career that would last more than five decades. 51 studio albums, 29 live albums, 165 singles 110 millions records sold (40 golden records, 22 platinum records, 3 diamond records) 3257 concerts (187 tours - 40 countries - 29 millions spectators). Mostly a rocker he could , like a chameleon, sing in almost every genre. Covering almost all rock hits (Elvis, Beatles,...) or Edith Piaf but also singing in duet with the french rap group Minister Amer or with opera singer Montserrat Caballé.

Thank you so much! Johnny, who passed away few years ago, was THE French superstar, even if almost unknown outside the Exagone. Lara Fabian was so stressed to sing in front of his very Rock'n'roll public that she got stucked at him like a clamshell! But as Johnny is very kind, his loving public is too. Johnny have always had the courtesy not to cover the voice of his guests, and her performance blows our mind! It was in Stade de France of Paris, the biggest of french stadiums. It was raining that night which gives even more intensity to the song! The Symphonic orchestra and the Chorus give even more intensity! Thank you so much! Lara should have had the same career as Céline Dion, but her career was a bit impeached by Céline's absolute triomphe abroad at that time ! Anyway, she might not be the same international superstar as Céline, she stays our queen in France !!!

you're right : they switch the pronouns to make a duet of this very famous and dramatic song of him. He's the best selling and famous rock singer in France. Even if we don't all like his music (that's my case), people in France all knows him and can sing one or two of his songs. He was also very famous for his stage performances, the high quality of his concerts and for spending energy without limits, and above all his peculiar way to pronounce the vowells ("u" instead of "ou" for example, "amuuur" instead of "amour" ^^)

Thank you... your reaction to this is one of my favourites for the song. You are the only other one who articulates her classically trained technique so well, and notices what she does when she just basically jumps from a growl to an operatic voice/sound. The performance is truly remarkable, and definitely intense, dramatic. You are aware that Lara had an auditory accident in 2013, right? It has affected her voice ever since. Now she looks like she strains more, but still, my absolute favourite female pop voice of the planet. No contest for moi.

Some people can think the gestures are exaggerated. You have to put in context. This is a live concert in a stadium with 90 000 peoples, in a rainy day.

He loved his fans and the idea of disappointing all these people who were there for hours had been a real pain for him. I really love this concert with the two of them but I prefer by far the first time they sang this song together, it was on a tv show ("Les Enfoirés" where a lot of French and non French artists sing together for charity) and it was after that performance that he invited her to join him on stage to perform this song with him. *Requiem for a madman* I'm warning you, don't come closer, Whether you're a cop or onlooker. I'll kill the one who makes a move. No, I'll not do any favors! And turn off all these search-lights, And lower your guns pointed on me. No, I'll not fly away without her. Tell the priest, tell the pastor, That elsewhere they go and be hanged. The devil came earlier, And my soul is no longer for sale. If you grant me this night, At dawn, I'll give you my life. Cause, what would be my life without her (him -> Lara)? I was such a madman. But due to love, She made out of me a madman, a madman of love. My heaven, it was her eyes, her mouth. My life, it was her body, her body ... I loved her so much that I killed her to keep her. Because for a great love to last forever, It must die, it must to die of love ... The day rises, the night's palling, Hunters and dogs are starving. It's time to sound the hunting, The beast must die this morning. I'll open wide the shutters, Aim for the heart; I'm waiting. I want to fall asleep with her (him -> Lara) forever. I was a madman. But due to love, She made out of me a madman, a madman of love. My heaven, it was her (his -> Lara) eyes, (his -> Lara) mouth. My life, it was her (his -> Lara) body, her (his -> Lara) body ... I loved her so much that I killed her to keep her. I'm just a madman (You're just a madman -> Lara), just a madman of love A poor madman who dies, Who dies of love ... Notice: There are two versions of this song, the original sung only by Johnny Hallyday. And of course this one which has today become the most famous version.
