i had the same problem with a hp2000. I bought a batttery first and tried this procedure. and it failed. I had a generic after market 90w charger and plugged it in and worked. so i compared the 2. the voltages are slightly different by 1 volt. but the amperage is 1amp greater on the after market charger. I'll run a meter on both chargers and see if there is a voltage problem.
I didn't know you can turn on a laptop, without the battery. Mind Blown!

nick i just did the tutorial on my laptop, that was fantastic, its working again, and it was so simple. especially for someone like me who is not to good with computers. thank you!
This instructional is the gift that keeps on giving. I followed the steps and it appears to be working. Thanks!
Hey you guys, just wanted to let you know this does work! I hadn't used my laptop for over a year (since 2015). I finally pulled it out and got a new charger for it (previous one broke). noticed I had this problem and came up here and followed the steps. When I first turned it back on after putting the battery back in it stayed on one percent for a few minutes maybe like 10. so I closed my laptop and opened it back up. it was still on 1%. I turned my head and looked back and it was at 20% and now it's charging steadily. This is the first charge so I haven't let it die yet, but I will once I get to that far. I'll let you guys know how it goes from there. Jan 11, 2017 (hp pavilion dv6)
Genius! This was soooo easy to do and it worked. I was so worried that my laptop was doomed and I'd have to pay a fortune to get it fixed or buy a new one, but I decided to give this a try and it worked. I'm not at all a techy or computer person and I got it on my own on the first try. Thank you, Nick!!! You rock :-)

Some batteries are not removable because they use an epoxy to seal it. This is often seen on the really slim stuff. Basically, you are fucked. You could bring it to a tech, but usually it will cost more to repair than to buy a new one. Next time check that you can replace the battery.
OMG!!! I am one of the most computer illiterate people you'd ever meet. However, I followed your instructions with precision and my battery is working like charm!! Thank you so much!! Simply amazing and problem solved! :)

So far so good, it started charging again after I followed the instructions. Cheers
Hi, I tried the steps in your video, and they WORKED! So, my question is, what is the reason for the problem, and why do these steps fix it? Also, on the first and second recharges, the battery was charged up to 100%. However, on the third, recharging stopped at 80%. I let the battery discharge down to ~77%, then plugged in AC power, and it recharged again up to 80%, and stopped. BTW, it was at 80% when I first noticed the issue, which your video steps fixed. Any ideas about what may be going on? Thanks!
This would work for me, but my laptop is always on "0% available, (plugged in not charging)" so the moment I remove the charger the laptop will shut down, thus I can not proceed in doing the rest of the steps.

+Caprica Six , and everyone on this thread. You have to shut down the PC and unplug it (for safety reasons) BEFORE you take the battery out. THEN, (without the battery) plug it in, turn on to Windows, uninstall drivers mentioned on the video, shut off again, unplug, put battery back on, re-plug, turn on PC. That's it. PS. If your PC doesn't turn on with just the power adapter, you might have (1) a broken AC jack, or (2) a bad power adapter.

Works like a charm! To me, key was to let the battery drain completely in step 12 even after the laptop shut itself down by itself by hitting the power button and letting it continue. I tried several other suggestions for over six months and the battery full charge kept dropping. Thanks for the video and simple to follow instructions.

Thank you! This is working for me. I have a quick question. After you turn the laptop back on, you mention to do the battery drain 3x. If the laptop is down to 50% power after doing all your steps, should I charge it to 100% before doing the battery drain OR just let it drain from the 50% mark?
thanks it worked perfectly, the question I have is even if the computer says 'not charging' is it still charging but not displaying it or is it really not charging??
Brilliant! After I upgraded to Windows 10, I started seeing "plugged in, not charging" on my laptop. Tried various suggestions, then yours. Yours worked-- and I didn't even have to drain/recharge the battery. Cheers.

Funny thing. The new replacement battery for my laptop failed after 3 months but within warranty. The company gave me a procedure to try, along with a link to this video. I tried a couple of times but the new battery remained at zero charge. I thought I would try the old battery and it showed 4% charge and started charging! Thanks, your procedure proved the new battery had failed.
This didn't work for me, but what finally did is simpler: Key concept: An OS like Windows will automatically shut the laptop off when it THINKS the battery is low, even if the voltage is still OK. BIOS setup will let it run until power is truly gone and the voltage drops too low. 1) With the battery in and the laptop plugged in, turn it on. 2) Immediately go into BIOS setup. Hit ESC, DEL, F8, F2, whatever your laptop takes. 3) Do not leave setup. Just let it sit there. 3) Unplug the laptop, but leave the battery in 4) Let the battery drain until the laptop shuts off due to lack of voltage. 5) Plug it back in and boot it up. Presto! The battery fully charges.

Appears to have worked on an HP 15 Windows 10, version 10.0.16299.125 (at least it's charging now - until the next Windows 10 update, lol). It was stuck on 1% and not charging. Following the instructions in this video produced the desired results. It took about 4 minutes to perform the steps. It may not work for every situation but if your battery is good and your charger is good then you should try this. A biG THANKS for the quick video that got right to the point.
Could a two prong adapter short circuit and ruin the ac plug because I went through 3 of those and always use the adapter. I tested with my moms plug and it always works with my battery. She has a three prong wall outlet so she doesn't need an adapter.
Thank you so much! You've saved me a lot of trouble.
My battery drained out completely, leading to sudden and abrupt shutdown of the laptop. When i plugged in the charger and started windows again the charge icon showed "plugged in, but not charging" also the battery hardware light was constantly flickering. I immediately searched the net and found out this post. First thing I did was properly shutdown my laptop. After the shutdown was complete I removed the charging cable from the laptop and plugged it in again after 3-5 seconds and voila ! No more filckering of battery charging notification light, everything went smooth as before from there on.This happened on my 5 year old Dell XPS 15, running windows 7 home premium.

+REF1EX I think you mean your battery is not externally seen? o.O Some laptops you have to take the entire bottom plate off in order to remove the battery.

Built-in battery?
10 years on and new laptops lol. Process is good for learning, even today, and issue was gradually lowering % of charger working over couple of years that has come down to 3%+ up to 12% max and I will try a new battery as a test tomorrow. Hope all enjoy good learning 😃
Good on yer Nick. This saved me from throwing out a perfectly good battery.
Ok it worked all right! but I don't quite understand the last step. Like I need to charge the battery full, remove it, let it cool, the drain it, re-plug the charger and that's one round of 3? or is it that I need to charge the battery full, then remove the battery to let it cool and only then resume the procedure?

I'm thinking the same! Is there an effective way to drain your battery? I know on IOS devices, there is an app to drain the battery and then charge it to full again, but not sure if there's an easy way to do it with a laptop? O.O

try borrowing another charger, I have 2 chargers, 1 turns my laptop ON but it won't charge the battery, the second charger turns my laptop ON and it also charges my battery, I think the charger has a battery charge sensor that can go bad, good luck

Great video. What do I do if the battery is not externally removable.
Worked THUS far and I couldn't disengage battery... Battery charging again, 2 more battery drains to do…. Thanks, Nick!

So you just answered my question. One must charge then "drain" the battery 3 times...then it will solve the problem. Will try this, Thanks
My dad suggests buying a new battery for my laptop. Will that also work?

***** This guy. Everyone listen to this guy. I took off my battery and sure enough both male and female ports on my laptop/battery were dusty as hell (kinda embarrassing but true). Turned on my laptop and everything was back to normal. You just saved me a butt load of time. Thanks!

Great video. Tried everything. Realized I am missing the Microsoft Composite Battery - driver. I can't find it anywhere online, to install. Is not reinstalled after following the instructions in this video. Still missing.
