LAOWA 15mm f4 1:1 with KX800 Twin Macro Flash

The third of three videos looking at the path to create and shoot wide angle macro using the Laowa 15mm f4 1:1 with the Laowa KX800 Twin Macro Flash system. I made some of my own diffusion panels for the flash arms and finally got to test it out in a green area close to my apartment. These are the results.

    Did the arms ever snap on you? The right arm on mine snapped and it’s loose now. My version is about 4 years old. Did they improve e design?

  • @seawildearth

    @seawildearth

    Yep, the arm itself didn't snap but I think all the bending and articulation caused the breaking of one of the wires inside the arm. Now using the second unit I've owned.

    Do you recommend a flash ring for this lens?

    Hi there, I've never used a ring flash so I wouldn't really know. Macro shooters are split between standard, twin and ring flash users so I would imagine it would, or should, be OK.

    How durable is the flash ? Do you recommend it ?

    I would say 50 / 50 to be honest. I have now bought a second one as the first one simply died by over articulating and bending the support arms. I guess one of the internal wires must have broke. I did get a good year and a half out of it though.

    Hi @seawildearth, how long have you been using this 'franken' flash? I just wonder about its durability. I am interested to buy one but i am not sure about the long term use of the arms if they will get shaggy at some point, what has been your experience so far?

    Peter Brakels you can say I’m a fool, but I bought this flash 4 years ago and the right arm broke from minimal bending. Since then I’ve been using the youngnuo twin flash that attaches to the lens. It works very well BUT it’s easy to bump into bugs. So, today I ordered this twin flash again and will try to be really careful with the delicate arms. Hopefully the design was improved and I’ll keep you posted on how it works. I have my own little diffusers. What are you into shooting?

  • @MrGflan

    @MrGflan

    @@mike2687 it works, but I personally like the Youngno twin flash much better. It’s a lot better lighting and easy to use. I would choose the younguo if you are debating the two

    I'm late to the party, sorry about that folks. I did have a breakage but it wasn't the arm itself but I think all the bending and articulation caused the breaking of one of the wires inside the arm. Now using the second unit I've owned.
