Language Teaching Methods: Audio-Lingual Method

Language Teaching Methods explores various methodologies of English language teaching. This was a joint project by Diane Larsen-Freeman and the U.S. Information Agency and was produced in 1990. This video demonstrates the Audio-Lingual Method with Michael Jerald.

No teacher will use one single method, and that's not the purpose of this video. The reason is to make teachers aware of the range of possibilities they have to face the different situations in class. Audiolingual method covers one part of students' needs and thanks to this method teachers can foster ss learning english in one way or another. Wonderful lesson and thanks to Diane for such great knowledge being shared to everyone interested in second language learning.

  • @brunocoriolano
    @brunocoriolano11 жыл бұрын

[2] I liked the drills (from the ALM) and I think we should use them in the classroom in order to provide students with more vocabulary. I liked when the teacher asked a student to perform the dialog. The way the teacher corrects the student is focusing on the ‘correct’ grammar structure seems to be a strong characteristic of this method.

This method and the others like natural approach and total physical response are the best ones to teach those who are interested in speaking English, nevertheless, for those who want to learn the language deeply obviously must study Grammar deeply. So this method is perfect for people want to adquire the language and learn grammar subsconciously.

    1. The teacher role-played the dialogue by himself. (Presentation). What can we use instead of role-play nowadays? 2. Why did the teacher role-play the dialogue twice? 3. Why didn’t the teacher have the students read from a copy of a dialogue? 4. What was one of the main roles of the teacher in this lesson? 5. Language learning is a process of habit formation. What does it mean? 6. What does ‘backward buildup drill’ mean? 7. Why is it important to prevent students from making errors? 8. How do ‘a single slot substitution drill’ and ‘a question-and-answer drill’ work? 9. Why did the students see the written version of the dialogue at the very end of the lesson?

[1] For a demonstrative lesson it is okay, but imagine this in progress in an everyday course. I guess, again, it is easy to use with the first levels but what about the upper-intermediate and advanced ones? I strongly feel that the communicative approach, mixed with other features from some other methods, is the best method, although we are in the post-method era, the communicative approach seems to be the most effective one.

This is the accent charm. Homework was memorization Why???

If I were the teacher of this class I would provide the written form of the dialogue while the practice is going on. After completing practice, I would show a video of requesting and responding to the request in a different context. Then I would divide the whole class into pairs and ask them to choose a situation and prepare their own dialogue in the light of the practiced conversation. Appreciation would be given to them by clapping after each performance.

The teacher is giving more emphasis to enhance the speaking and listening power. It is a very typical way. The teacher can present a real life scenario of that incident to his students. It may help the students' to understand the situation better and they can communicate with others in their practical life.

Yes sir, he is. but I want to show them a real life conversation between a homemaker and a salesman. Or I would have suggested them to go to a grocery or any kind of shop. Then, they can have the idea of 'seller and buyer' conversation. I would like to pursue them to write an experience of their own about this 'selling or buying' thing. It will be very helpful for the students because then they can relate their real life situation with the conversation. At the same time it will help them to develop their communicative skill. The most important thing is, if the whole idea proves effective for the learners then it will help the learners to meet with four main skills.

WIthout grammar instructions and rules, communication could not be flexible in specific contexts. Real-life situations are full of unexpected expressions and verbal responses. This method may be suitable for children classes only at the discretion of the teacher. Besides, students would be exhausted to be forced all the time.

My first impression is that ALM as demonstrated here is not suited for anything like a communicative language approach. There is much to be said for parroting as a pronunciation technique -- suprasegmentals especially -- but telling students what to say rather than eliciting what they want to say or ask or communicate about has real limits.

The teacher shows a better way to teach language. However, I am going with my teacher Mr. Zohur Ahmed as he suggest to give some written form. I want to add two new things 1. Pair work 2. Written from with picture. I mean graphical or pencil sketch of the whole act. (because I think the pictures will give the students an involvement with the situation)

Well, friend, I'm ignorant about methodologies, but as far as I know, the last two steps of audiolingual is reading and writing. I have adopted this in my classrooms. Besides that, I couldn't agree more with you when you said their should be more free interaction.

It doesn't matter what method you use, if the teacher doesn't have charisma even using treats and the lastest teaching method won't do.

If it used for the pronunciation and fluency part of the class and it is handled well, it is a very fun and useful way to practice. It really helps students who suffer from anxiety when speaking.

This approach is good enough.but much improvement could have been added to this.i like the fact that the instructor is using a real situation.but repeating the same lines makes me boring. i think the students also might have felt monotonous at some point.if i was the instructor i would have asked the students to make sentences in that structure and i would have involved them in such a way that they keep interested through whole process.

from afroza luna here students are look like talking parrot........what their teacher told them to do they were doing that by memorizing it which is not good for students always. but i cannot deny the effort of this teacher. so according to me i want to add few things like - 1. if written form provide by the teacher 2. students also have to know that beside this dialogue they have much more to say or to face in real 3. teaching style should be more realistic not artificial
