Landslide creates massive hole near Jackson, Wyoming
A portion of Teton Pass “catastrophically failed,” Wyoming authorities said Saturday, leaving a massive hole along a mountain pass that's a critical link between small eastern Idaho towns and the tourist destination of Jackson, Wyoming.

Drove on that road 2 days ago. It happened because of all the rain and flooding there. Plus, in winter, the highway is getting closed a lot from avalanches. It's very steep mountains. It's part of the Teton range.

@@gregknipe8772 Isn't that depressing? Obviously, things like this are going to happen to mountain roads...in the 1930s we built the Empire State Building in about a year. You would think we could repair a few hundred feet of road in less time.

@signsofplay Alot of people who live in Victor, Id work in Jackson Hole. I know some kids who got a summer job and commuted to Jackson. By the end of the summer they all had more than 4k in their bank account. Atleast most people there own their homes.
This is a spectacular failure of engineering. When I was a kid my dad knew a guy at WYDOT who told stories of the civil engineer that designed the current roadway in the mid 60s. The engineer was apparently incompetent and had been fired from other engineering gigs before designing the pass.
I have traveled that route many times.
What was going on with the other side of the road? Maybe it contributed?

No, it was weather related. It’s been raining and snowing here for the past few weeks
@WYruAFRAID

The pavement was already cracking and they were trying to build a temporary “work around”… and yes, possibly added more stress to the already weakened areas? Mother Nature prevails. We haven’t has any unusual amounts of rain or snow this spring… it was just time perhaps.
Fantastic drone flying photography! I would have liked to see downhill a little bit further.

Yes, some wider/higher altitude footage.
Obviously this type of thing is expected in mountain terrain...the true question is how long it will take to be repaired.
They will have to build it like a train trestle bridge...
The brave highway workers who put out the cones❤❤ respect❤❤❤
That is not something that was knocked off. That is something that had the rug pulled out from under it.
The report did not mention anyone injured or worse, so I hope that was the case.
@Quadrenaro
Ай бұрын
Yeah. The road was closed for some time before it washed out. I got a notification hours before the collapse that the pass was closed. Nobody injured, but some people who depend on this route will need to find new jobs, and may lose their homes. Jackson pays alot of money to workers in Victor who commute daily. I just woke up to this news. Fortunately I only go over the pass once a year or so, unfortunately, I was going over it next week. Luckily there is the Holbrook route to the south, and lesser known northern route just north of the Tetons.

Wheres all the dirt? Why are trees still stanfing at the bottom? Odd....
@irenafarm

The dirt is under the part that broke away. It dropped away in basically one chunk. The trees at the bottom aren’t standing. They’re smashed underneath the part that fell. The trees you see were on the roadside.

There was a lot of fuss over the infrastructure bill. The proceeds will probably be spent more on replacing damage wrought by climate disaster than improving infrastructure to avoid. I can't imagine a government accomplishing both through better design or innovation.
