Hi, I'm Peter 😊. If you enjoy this video, please leave a like and subscribe to see more videos. Feel free to leave a comment or question below. More: / @peterfritzphoto . Most people love a wide lens for landscapes. I prefer ultra-long. Let me demonstrate with my Canon RF 100-500 super-zoom lens. It replaces my much-loved RF 100-400, which in turn replaced my favourite lens of all, the EF 100-400.

Fair weather…yep! Love how you pluck out the perfect play on light and shadow in your landscapes. That’s some Lens, my shoulders hurt just watching you hoist it up! Scott is always juggling glasses and moaning about how gets in the way 😉. FYI your hair looks great. Take care my friend 🤗

Love this lens, for my hobby photography, this is THE lens, super quality and compact enough top bring on trips. On the R5 it surprises me everytime with how good the images get even though they look like crap through the viewfinder. I love to photograph all kinds of wildlife.

Me too! Each time I get the images onto my computer and do a 3-minute edit, I’m blown away by the resolving power of this camera. It’s brilliant.
Your style resonates with the way I like to shoot these days so this video was great in that regard. And I hear you about needing glasses - ugh! I thought my battery had died recently and it was only because I had forgotten to take off my sunglasses! Have fun with that new lens that looks like a gem.

Hahaha!! That’s so me! A couple of times I’ve gone through a Macca’s drive-thru, and the little screen that shows my order is all black. Polarised sunglasses…. 😂
I'd of never considered using this lens for landscape, thanks for the amazing images

I can relate to you I have blue eyes and have to wear my sunglasses all the time. I sold my 100-500 it was way to heavy so I got the 100-400 now its way better for me. Love your photos

Yes, the 100-400 is absolutely brilliant, and it ticks every box for 95% of amateur photographers. I’m now trying out a two-lens system: the 100-500 and the 24-70 f2.8. I just sold my beloved 14-35, as I hardly ever shot wider than 24mm. We’ll see how this goes. Take care, Angela.
I prefer a wider lens most of the time. As you mentioned, it helps me document the story I'm trying to tell. That said, a long lens is an essential part of the kit for many situations. I need both! Excellent video, buddy! Take care.

Thanks, mate. I think it just suits the areas I shoot because of the topography. If I shot shoreline or forest scenes, I’d be grabbing a wider lens more often, that’s for sure.

@@PETERFRITZPHOTO The right tool for the job. Take care!
Love your photos as always Peter. I don't go out too much in really bad weather. I am a bit older than you and not as nimble or agile as I once was. Where I live is surrounded on one side by heavy rainforest and a very steep escarpment. Mobile phone and gps reception is very poor so I can't afford an accident. Also in bad weather the authorities close the roads and trails due to landslips and rock falls. One of our major roads up to the Southern Highlands has been closed for months because a large section of road no longer exists. I have the M43 equivalents of the 28-300mm and 150-600mm lens, I tend to use these for birds and wildlife more than landscapes. The 28 -300mm lens is on my camera most of the time because I find it very versatile. When I can't shoot my usual areas I visit the local beaches and coastal cliffs. In this case I often find shorter focal lengths more convenient. Given the atrocious weather in Victoria I hope you and your family stay safe.

Thank you, John - I've always appreciated your wonderful support. I'd dearly love to shoot up around your area, but I imagine it would be very difficult -as beautiful as they are, heavily wooded areas are bloody hard to capture. I must admit, I've toyed with the idea of getting a really versatile lens like the Canon RF 24-240, but right now, I'm seeing if the 24-70 f2.8 (just bought) and the 100-500 (ditto) can satisfy all my creative and technical urges! As for our weather - yep, it sure is crap right now. We're in a lull right now, but I think it's going to get very wet again soon. Take care, mate.
I'm a fair weather photographer too Peter. I've always said, if I happen to get caught out in the rain when I'm out, that's ok. But I refuse to actually go out when it's raining. Apart from anything else, I use a mobility scooter which really doesn't like the rain. Plus being sat in the rain really isn't my idea of fun!

Haha! I wish I was more adventurous, but these days, I like to be comfortable given the choice. An no, the last thing you need is for your scooter to do a ‘flooded Tesla’! Take care, Ash. 😄
Totally enjoy your videos. I was wondering if you could mention your settings. Thanks

Thanks, Katie. I used to do that, but I’ve chosen not to for a couple of reasons. The first is I’m less of a teaching channel than say, Nigel Danson and more of an ‘old bastard with a camera in the landscape’ channel. The second reason is I’m lazy in that regard… 😄
Love the long lens but I am guilty of not using it half as much as I should P. The compression factor was supremely highlighted in this vlog, especially in the later layered shot, just glorious 🙏🙏🙏
@PETERFRITZPHOTO

Thanks, old boy. Yeah, I find that compression really appealing - especially when each layer is lit so differently.
Hi Peter, I have never used this lens for landscape, but seeing your images they gave me a lot of inspiration. However, I need to travel further than you to see vistas similar to those in your neighbourhood . Around Melbourne the 15-35 & 24-70 are my go to landscape lenses.

Thanks, Adnan. I’m only 25 minutes north of the city, and this video was shot just near Wallan, a bit further north. You have two class-leading lenses - a mid to long zoom might surprise you.
I have the Sigma 100-400 C in my fpL line up and I love it. In fact I started with an old Canon EF 70-200 f/4 with a x1.4 converter - but when used through an EF-to-L-mount converter the weight is only 23g lighter than the Sigma 100-400 so a no-brainer. I also have a Canon EF 17-40 but I hardly ever use it - most of the time it is the 24-70 that sits on the camera! Hope all is well with you sir? All the best from the UK
@PETERFRITZPHOTO
Жыл бұрын
Yep, the Sigma makes good sense. I just bought a 24-70 2.8, which will now be my ‘everything else’ lens. I found I almost never shot wider than 24mm, so this two-lens combo *should* cover all my needs. I’m very well, mate, and hope you are, too. I’m looking forward to watching your newest video on giving your subject space.
The 100-500mm is certainly my priciest lens, but worth every penny as far as I'm concerned! I shoot wildlife as well, so I recently picked up an R7 to complement my R5, and the lens produces amazing results on both, even with the 1.4x teleconverter. I haven't tried much landscape photography with it, I'll definitely have to give that a try! The issue I tend to have with landscapes at long focal lengths is atmospheric haze--it's usually a bit humid in these parts.
@PETERFRITZPHOTO
Жыл бұрын
Oh, this would be amazing on the R7. I used to use my EF 100-400 and a 2x converter on my M6 MKII for birds in the backyard, and the results were incredible. You’re right about haze. Unless that’s the look you’re going for, a long lens is definitely not ideal. What area are you in?
@wanderland_xyz
Жыл бұрын
@@PETERFRITZPHOTO It is indeed! I have (and do like) the 800mm f/11 as well, but the 100-500mm on the R7 is basically an 800mm f/7.1, plus it focuses a lot closer than 6 meters. :) I came up through various crop-sensor Canon dSLRs, from the 350D up to the 7D2, so I was missing the crop factor for wildlife and macro. Really liking the R7 so far (though of course I'm hanging on to the R5 for landscape, architecture, etc.) I grew up in the swamps of central Florida, but these days home is near Richmond, Virginia--a couple hours south of Washington DC. Beautiful area, with actual seasons (unlike Florida, which is basically varying degrees of summer year-round)!
Hi new subscriber, enjoy your perspective. Am deciding between the 100-400 vs the 100-500. I was struck that you didn't see a difference in image quality. How do you feel now a year later? I mostly do landscape in fair weather. Thanks!

Hi, and thanks for dropping by. The 100-400 is brilliant, but I couldn’t justify keeping both lenses. In reality, there was no technical justification for getting the 100-500 other than the extra 100mm. For landscapes, the 100-400 is perfect.
I worry about the weight of this lens for hand holding. How is it for an extended period - not leaning it on a fence, as in this video?
@PETERFRITZPHOTO
Жыл бұрын
I reckon you’d feel it, for sure. But then, if you were using it for motorsports or wildlife, you’d still be better off than if you were using fast primes. As for landscapes, I’ll likely have it on a tripod most of the time, so it should be okay. If nothing else, hand holding it offers much needed exercise!
I didn't know you went for the 100-500mm. I remember your videos praising the 100-400mm, which is a lot smaller and lighter, not to mention cheaper. You almost made me regret to have gone for the longer lens. Now I use it much too little. What made you decide to get the longer lens as well? Does the extra 100mm make such a bit difference. The R5 gives you plenty of pixels, and room for cropping.
@PETERFRITZPHOTO
Жыл бұрын
Hi Hans. The 100-400 is absolutely brilliant, and more than enough for 95% of us. I have no logical reason for getting the 100-500. In fact, the weight of it already bothers me, and the images it produces are no better than the 100-400. The only reason I bought it is because I had an opportunity to get one very cheaply. Plus, the scarcity of the 100-400 meant I could sell it for more than I’d paid. The extra 100mm reach is nice for my kind of shooting, and the extra speed might be useful if I ever decide to shoot wildlife, but other than that, I already miss the compactness and lightness of the smaller lens.

@@PETERFRITZPHOTO Thanks Peter! I spent many years in Africa, and still hope to get back there one day on a safari. But with that Covid crisis, and getting on in years, I am not so sure if I'll be hunting wildlife again. I bought my 100-500mm before the smaller lens came out. That's the main reason. I do use it for bird photography, but not enough.
