I lived there many years ago as a young US soldier. I can express in words how I fell in love with this beautiful town and all my German friends. I think about it often and look back with great fondness. They were the happiest days of my life. I have been over those streets many times, even slept in the church one night, the door was unlocked. I also spent a year in Landsberg as a U.S. soldier, attached to the West German Army, billeted on their base just outside of town. I was part of the very first NATO unit as a nuclear support unit to a German artillery battalion. Everything you said in your comments are straight out of my own sentiments about the wonderful experience I had in the town and among the German friends I made.

Summer of 61 to the summer of 62. I was in the original group that was formed into the 24th Missle Detachment at Ft. Sill, OK. We trained there for five months and then shipped out as a unit of 20. We were the first to occupy the building on the Neue Kaserne in Landsberg. The base might of had a name change by the time you served. I went back to Landsberg in 2017, 55 years after I left in 1962. It was a surreal experience.@@waderivers3304

@@danielkeough1412 Incredible! I went to college afterwards and knew way more than my professors. The time I spent there was the education of a lifetime. I went everywhere but Berlin. You were there at the height of the Cold War. I wasn’t, it was the best of times. As you know very well, now is the most dangerous time since then. God help the people there. I hope to go back and see it, loved everything about that beautiful city.

@@waderivers3304 Yes, we (my unit) arrived and moved on to the German base a week before the Berlin wall started to be erected in a midnight move. We were awaken early and every NATO soldier in western Europe was put on alert, and preparations were under way to advance into the field. It was a very volatile week until whatever the powers that be did to defuse it. Being there made me acquire a deep interest in the history of that entire madness of WWII and sociopolitical breakdown that allowed it to happen. Where do you reside in the U'S.? I n the last few years on a cross country motorcycle trip, I recently reconnected and met up with two Army buddies from our hitch in Landsberg, that I hadn't seen since I rotated back to the U'S in 1962. That was a real joy to see them and talk old times. Did you know that when the cold war ender and the soviet union collapsed, all those nuclear detachments were deactivated? The German base In Landsberg was closed and turned into a condo village. The interiors of all the buildings were reconfigured into apartment units and the entire area is a little condo enclave. Regarding your closing sentence, the Germans shouldn't have closed the base. they might need it now.
