The thing is Lando is just 1.5 years older than Oscar. I don’t think he’s going to stop improving anytime soon, he’s very much an echo of the Max Verstappen story; a young prodigy teenager who a team put all their faith in. I think he could seriously be a dominating force if he is in perfect harmony with future cars / upgrades and the strategies at McLaren take a step up too. Which is why I think we’ll see Oscar in red after Lewis is done…maybe I should make videoes sometime too 🤔

Also don’t get me wrong here I think highly of Oscar too, I just think they won’t stay in the same team for too long precisely because of that reason and ultimately McLaren his Landos team (as I see it at least) but I think we could see those to fighting for a title in the future…in different teams, because I think McLaren would back Lando for the fight if others are involved such as Max or Charles. And I personally think they’re both better (currently one of them) is than Charles’ potential

If I were a McLaren fan, I would not be getting my hopes up for a title fight just yet. The problem for me is that Lando hasn't yet proved that he would be able to handle the pressure. In fact, he's proven that he crumbles when the pressure turns on. We saw what happened to Leclerc. Sure Ferrari strategy didn't help but his spin in France and Imola was all on him. I think people are being unnecessarily harsh and hyperbolic when it comes to Oscar's tyre deg problems and race pace issues. It's like everyone's forgot he's still a rookie for all intents and purposes and instead expects that he should be equaling a driver who's now not only into year 5 at McLaren (5 years of experience and tailoring to McLaren), but a driver who entered into his prime form in 2023 and 2024. It's not Carlos Sainz he's being compared - you know when Carlos Sainz was still mid. It's Prime Lando, who showed that he had better one lap pace than Carlos but in his rookie season. Even then, Lando was still ways off in the races and race pace and that persisted for 2 years. Don't forget, Lando said himself that he didn't truly get on top of his tyre management until last year. If Oscar is this close to Prime Lando and Prime Sainz already, as a rookie driver, as long as continues to learn and improve and work on areas that need work on, he'll be right up there with them soon - year 3 or 4, which is roughly the same time frame that the other two took (though Sainz took a bit longer). We also can't discount the car or Pirelli's role in this, either. Since 2022, it's been the worst period for a rookie to come into F1 in terms of tyre performance and deg and the handling of the cars (more front limited). On top of this is the fact that the McLaren still is rather peculiar and requires a very particular driving style and soft touch, something which Lando has honed around the car for almost 5 years now. In contrast, Oscar has a much more aggressive driving style on the brakes and acceleration and is a significantly shorter corner driver, getting on the power much earlier than Lando out of a corner. This is partly why he's so fast, but also why he struggles with tyre wear, as reeling that back to look after the tyres while still being fast over a race distance is a fine art in and of itself. You can check the onboards yourself if you want to see proof of what I'm saying.

i heard mark hughes say something interesting on the Race podcast recently about piastri's driving style, he always has quite reliable inside knowledge. He said piastri prefers a very strong front end, much more than norris, in fact he even said only two other drivers have had this preference, that being Schumacher or Verstappen who loved very pointy fast cars and can handle that extreme rear instability. It's interesting because McLaren aero balance has always been known to be the complete opposite of that i.e known to be very weak on the front end.

  • @JC-lu4se

Is it really Prime Lando? Are you suggesting he's at his peak at 23? He might go higher or he may plateau. This being F1, Oscar is going to get more and more criticism about his race pace if he doesn't start getting closer to Lando by year's end or by some point in 2025. It's F1 and everyone is either "underrated or overrated" depending on which way the wind is blowing. Oscar will cop it by social media "experts" and perhaps by some pundits as well if he can't get his head around the Pirellis. Personally, I think Lando's mentality will hold him back while Oscar will get through this flat spot and will improve as nothing seems to affect him.

Might not be exactly what you want to hear but I have a sneaking feeling McLaren won't be able to pull this off. None of the teams I think truly understand the car hence the inconsistencies in 2023. Redbull really know what they are doing and Max has a habit when pushed of turning into Ayrton. McLaren would need to straight up nail the regulations on this one for it to work.

the fact that parc ferme reopens after the sprint race could actually be a bonus for McLaren because they'd have a mini race with those upgrades and then have the opportunity to fine tune even more before the actual quali and race. I wanna be optimistic but I have been disappointed before so we'll have to wait.

Let's see how they go on this Miami strret course, i'll think youll find they will settle back behind the Ferraris and possibly the Aston of Alonso. (Stroll is a threat to no team)

McLaren is bringing the smile that Ferrari wiped away back to my face. My F1 fandom origins are very much a late 90's, early 2000's story, so Ferrari and McLaren are imbued with nostalgia and good memories for me. I've always been on the red side of that fight, but seeing McLaren return to the forefront just fills my heart with joy and excitement. Especially if Ferrari can remember to not go down the road of the last couple of seasons and stay competitive with good decisions. Red Bull may be out of reach still, but damn it if I'm not excited for the battle just behind them! (And who knows, we might even see Red Bull clawed back into this battle as well at some tracks further down the line this year.)

With the grid closing up more and more I really don’t want these new regulations to come for at least another 2-3 more years so we can hopefully see multiple drivers go for a tight championship like 2021. I’ve accepted Mercedes will most likely never get these regs right but seeing mclaren, Ferrari and Red Bull neck with Aston knocking on the door would be epic. Also Law are you gonna do a video on the new regs and how many experts are saying they are gonna be absolutely horrible?

He has previously denied offers from Ferrari, but it is Ferrari.. cos I think theirs a slight chance he comes to Williams considering, Williams and Head aren't their anymore and Newey likes an underdog he can take to the top

I’m honestly amazed how you can still back Oscar over Lando as a McLaren Fan. He’s the full Package, better driver, better personality, better results. Oscar is nice, he’s kinda boring as a person but I have no doubt he will develop into a great F1 driver once he gets there. But Lando is a great driver right now that is only getting bested by world champions in better cars right now, and is pure sunshine when it comes to personality
