I don't think Lando would want to go to Red Bull and be a designated number two driver - he's much better off at McLaren. I agree with you that's it makes sense for the teams to adopt the strategy of having a designated number one and number two driver - as a fan I don't like it, but I think it's best for the team. So that brings up the question of where does that leave Oscar Piastri?

@@WRC-FAN what do you mean where does that leave Oscar Piastri? He's McLaren's insurance policy for starters so if Lando leaves prematurely they have Oscar already primed for the lead driver at McLaren. They got him locked up until 2026. However, if Oscar decides to leave, he would have no shortage of suitors looking to take him. Red Bull have already expressed interest/regret and Ferrari would want a piece of that pastry also. Then there's also Audi and Williams if they ever manage to become top teams.

Lando recognises that RB is Max's team. He can work at McLaren and if it improves, he stands a chance at the title _not_ in the "best" car (if it's a Newey car, people will always say that). I think that today's younger drivers having loyalty to the teams that helped them get into F1 is lovely. Lewis definitely set the idea going by staying with McLaren for a number of years, only leaving them - having given them a WC - for Mercedes who'd been part of his journey alongside McLaren. We see it now with Max, Charles, George and Lando. You could say the same about Danny Ric realising where he was the happiest. Lando is very much aware of his personal happiness and his best mental state, and I'm absolutely 100% behind him on that. His choices are his alone and "fans" can stay out of it. As ever, Law, you've got it right again.

McLaren have been on a steady rise and I think they can make it past Mercedes in the long run. Who says they can't challenge Red Bull too? In that case, it's better for him to have a team where he has cultivated a great and healthy environment. Max has done that for himself at Red Bull, which is why Lando doesn't really fit in. McLaren is the best shot and beating Oscar at McLaren is much more likely to happen than beating Max at Red Bull, even though I rate Oscar as the potential next GOAT. Lando Norris still went up against tough teammates in his career. He started off with Sainz in 2019 and 2020, and which he was always close to in terms of performance, even in his rookie season when Lando beat Carlos in qualifying. Then Ricciardo joined for 2021 and 2022 to become the new leader at McLaren and Lando absolutely trashed him. Now he is challenged by Oscar who is one of the biggest prospects to join the F1 grid in the last couple of seasons. So whenever someone says that Lando is scared to go up against good teammates, it’s absolutely not true because Lando has faced quality teammates since 2019.

Missed that poll, but I guess there is something in the forehead that is loyalty and seeing what the future holds. In the back of the head however will reside the Max argument. Lando will need to be so much stronger mentally when teaming up with Max and even last year when he could be just let Max pass by. Max don't care when the visor goes down. I don't even think he has a bad personal opinion on Perez, but the professional opinion is to waltz over him. Same things goes for Lando. And this is specifically why I like Oscar. He don't care either. Learn what you can do in the car and see where you can close the gap. In contrast to Lando I think Oscar doesn't really see himself as a pretty boy, but just as a racer through and through. But we'll see this year what's what.

It's going to be very interesting to see how lando and piastri play out. working Together they might be able to claw a constructors championship for McLaren. But If piastri proves to be of equal or greater talent too soon, would he risk moving to another team or potentially leverage team politics with McLaren's project already being built around him. It's still early day's and piastri may end up just being a highly capable no.2 But I feel like he'd have higher emotional discipline to deal with inter team rivalry and not fall into the rabbit hole. I dunno!

It's absurd to me that this is even a conversation, much less specifically about Lando. Why isnt Lewis getting crap, or Leclerc, or George, or Alonso? Every championship-tier driver, in the eyes of the public, for that matter? They *all made the same decision*. Every #1 driver covets that spot. And they all know damn well how hard it is to come back from losing. Look at Ricciardo's stock after his stint at McLaren, or the nearly destroyed careers of Gasly and Albon after their stint at red bull! Its only in the last couple years that respect for them has come back. Hell, look at bottas! From the runner up in the championship and the best team on the grid to a narrow second to last. Kimi, who was regulated to second fiddle at Ferrari and ended up in alfa as well. And I don't want to hear "true champions would take the fight to max in his own team" - I've heard people cite senna, prost, and hamilton as "true champion tier drivers" that support that statement... But.. Prost had a contract with williams specifically keeping senna from being his teammate. They hated each other and only caused damage, and tore at each other's reputations with constant insults and insinuations. And Lewis? He has never really *chosen* to go for a fight. He was brought on to McLaren as the golden boy, and after the only real inter-team battle, himself and the team made sure that wouldnt happen again untill george came along - and george has gotten a hefty short end of the stick in 2023 on multiple occasions, including car direction. Lewis has been wishing for bottas back. What part of the "champion mentality" does lando not show by being... Smart? "A real champion would do whatever it takes to win" Correct. And you won't win against max in red bull. Lando is taking the best path available to him. Stick with a team that has put their weight behind him for like half a decade, a team who showed a ton of promise last year - and a team that - with some actual momentum preservation - could actually take the fight to max on merit. Lando saw what happened to checo, to daniel, to gasly and albon and bottas. Being stuck in the second seat with someone of equal or greater talent calling the shots is not a recipe to get influence in a team, much less dethrone that person. Even worse if, like max, he's in the form of his life. It would be easier for Albon to challenge with williams by 2028 than it would be for lando to hop in the red bull in 2025 and beat max. You don't go into someone's home turf, have his friends build your car, then challenge him to a race. It won't go well for you. Lando knows this. This is absolutely a winning mentality, just the way it is framed sucks. He's aiming to win by playing smart, not rushing like a hothead and getting destroyed for it. Same with Charles, same with Lewis, and likely the same with Alonso.

Taking the RB 2nd seat is only a great career move when you are only 1 or 2 seasons away from wanting to retire. You have resigned yourself to never being world champion or there is no completive number 1 seat in the top 4 teams you could get in. As for having a dream team, history has shown that has never worked out well when you have a team with 2 alpha drivers. I do think there is a Piastri vs Norris issue brewing that we have seen a little bit already and it will be interesting to see how they race each other and if either of them have radio problems and couldnt hear team orders.

to defend norris and for people who thinks f1 drivers are only good when they outperformed a legend take michael schumacher for example michael never had a teammate who is strong like jos ,eddie and ruben etc and yet he is still consider as one of the greats of f1 it is only when michael is out of his prime that he gets beaten by nico in mercedes what I'm basically saying is that you don't need to beat a legendary teammate in order to be consider as a great

With Michael at Mercedes, he was having to relearn F1 since it had changed drastically from 2006. By 2012, Michael had gotten the hang of it and could've been a title contender in the first half of the season had his car not failed him.
