Landing In Aspen With A 16 Knot Tailwind

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Should we land with a tailwind, hold over a narrow canyon, or divert? On this flight, communication was the key to getting into Aspen in one piece.

Excellent Aeronautical Decision Making, you made the call to not land with a tailwind and stuck with it. Also I love these videos keep them coming.

Years ago we flew into Aspen in a non-turbo 310 and were n umber two behind Aspen Airways for rwy 33. As they landed I turned final and was set to land with full flaps but left the mixture lean. I was less than 300 feet AGL when the airline pilot said he was making a 180 to taxi back, The tower told me to go around which I did and came around landing safely. As I taxied to the FBO I noticed the mixtures were still lean and realized that had I pushed the mixtures forward in my initial landing approach , the engines would have quit as soon as I attempted the go around. It was pure luck that I didn't push in the mixture - I just didn't think about it.

I spent a decent amount of time last fall/winter flying in/out of the airport in FSX (a flight sim). It is a wonderful airport with plenty of challenges through the winter months. Wish I had seen a video like this during those times. Great to see the real world mountains after being around the virtual world ones. (The real world ones look much better, though the price of seeing them is much, much more:-) )

You're right about not raising flaps. You'd probably unconsciously increase airspeed/groundspeed, and greater groundspeed = wider turning radius. Plus, raising flaps = potentially losing altitude if you're not careful. The 2006 Cory Lidle NYC Cirrus building crash was because he didn't plan his turning radius and was traveling fast. If he would have slowed down and dropped flaps before turning, he could have significantly cut down on his turning radius. As you said, you were flying at 100 knots, well above stall speed, and still had throttle response left if you needed it. Good decisions.

great vid ! that is the way to teach aviation, SAFETY first. you decide, your responsible for the safe completion of the flight, not the 'peer pressure or the tower. may the wind be at your back :)

That 8006’ becomes very short when you have a high Vref and a 10-15 knot tailwind at that high density altitude. Correct me if I’m wrong, but Aspen seems like an airport that requires some of the most planning for departure and arrival, especially in IMC, not to mention those extremely high climb gradients should you lose and engine.

Good management there. Were you close to fcm limit on tw? I also think there are about 3-5 empty 5-min slots to accomodate you on the other end... Still, its super correct that you teach to analyze hw/tw/sw conponent and if needed divert

Just about every corporate jet I’ve flown has a 10 kt tailwind limit. I’ve flown into Aspen multiple times in my career and rwy 15 is the only runway to land in a jet and rwy 33 is for takeoff. ATC was delaying you for the departing aircraft since no jets were landing because of the excessive tailwinds.

If you circle over the city counter-clockwise when the tower clears you to land, you can roll out on base leg. This makes holding and the approach much easier. Also, you can cancel the terrain warning to keep that noise to a minimum when it's severe clear. The Aspen Flight Academy uses two DA-40 for flight training in Aspen. Most of our students are Aspen High School Students. AspenFlightAcademy.org, come see us, we can teach you about Mountain Flying!

Did you get the feeling after parking, you were a pair of brown shoes in a room full of tuxedos? A Cirrus would be considered a very nice plane at most small airports. How many private jets can you see and count? LOL.... I stopped after 35.

Maldmorfs04 The airports location near terrain and mountains makes it so one runway is near impossible for most jets to safely make the approach.

Aspen airport is restricted to landing on 15 and taking off on 33 for most faster airplanes (jets) due to the terrain surrounding the airport.

Yes, some have tried high tailwind landings at Aspen, and it has not worked out well. NetJets, SkyWest all have tailwind limits along with specialized KASE training. That why they are great KASE frequent users! The last accident was a Challenger (from Mexico) that tried to land with a 38K tailwind. That resulted in an accident killing one - Injuring two.
