Even tho it was posted fourteen-years ago, this was a good entry tutorial. I've just gotten a region and was trying to figure out how to start terraforming it. Thanks for posting it.

It is good - as far as it goes. Inworld tools aren't brilliant though and if you have a full homestead, my recommendation is to got to SL Marketplace and look for RAW files, that were made in Paintshop Pro or a similar tool outside of Second Life. You can buy those and then have the estate owner load them. I have just done this. After 10+ years building my old homestead, I threw it away and started again. It's fun, frustrating and many other things. So I wanted to do it again :) You can still do terraforming inworld - I do it to create a flat surface underneath a house or something man-made that needs to be level. I found a leveling tool, which is just a prim with a script in it, to do 2x2, 4x4 and 8x8 - and with those you drop them on the ground, edit to the level you need and just move them around. When all of this is done though........there is still one really annoying thing - you can TRY to use the Region tools, to set terrain textures, and this simply does not work well. If you have a lake or ocean, you CANNOT get the shoreline to extend a set distance above the waterline and be horizontal & level all the way around. In the end, with textures, the only solution I have found is to use textures that blend well and mess about until you get the least bad appearance. Then place rocks, trees and other objects on top of the texture, where it should not appear. It's stupid, I know. But no-one has solved the problem of creating a level or even nearly level texture blend. But still - enjoy yourself. I have another 10 years building ahead of me. Can't wait.
