My dad had a 1966 diesel land rover in the same green as this one.i was about 9 years old when he had it.i remember the red&yellow 4 wheel drive select sticks well.noisy thing, but loved the sound of tge diesel engine.it started every time without fail&was deff 100 times more reliable then the modern electronic crap nowadays

Thanks was useful, just borrowed a 1958 Land Rover and had no idea why is it going very slow only in 3 gear it was in low range, now works good :)

You can switch from low to high range "easily" because 3rd low range is very close to 1st high range. The tricky bit is timing the shift because the transfer case gears aren't synchronized.

Sometimes when I do that it stays in 4 wheel, so what I do is stop then put it in reverse go back a few meters then push red lever forward and then it is fully out of 4 wheel 😊just a little tip there

The reason it stays in 4wd is transmission windup occuring when 4wd is engaged when traversing hard road surfaces. Your technique of reversing a few metres helps relieve the windup and then disengagement becomes easy.

@@78a67h hi there, my yellow lever is not popping up, I'll try driving in reverse next week when I get home to my land rover. What is transmission windup? is a common issue or I have to replace a part so it wont happen again. I'll appreciate your help.

  • @78a67h

@@aavenderr Your yellow lever should pop up when you pull the red lever all the way back, as shown in the vid. You must know that on Series LRs you should only use 4WD on loose surfaces eg mud, snow, sand, dirt roads but not on hard tarmac. Transmission windup will occur if you break this rule in which case you may lose vehicle momentum and steering becomes difficult or impossible. The transmission components will come under undue strain and bind, but this problem is only temporary provided you stop asap. To correct things reverse a few metres and disengage 4WD. If you keep repeating this mistake, especially for extended periods, transmission components will fail prematurely due to overloading or you may even suffer a catastrophic failure while on the go signaled by a loud bang.

I'm thinking of getting a 1980 series 3 ffr ex mod, but they say it will only go into gear when engines off. Dyou know anything about this or could it be commented to these levers? He wonders if its to do with the clutch going.

That’s correct. This can be solved by installing free wheeling hubs on the front axle. But then you need to get out of the vehicle to engage them when you want four wheel drive.
