Land Rover Series 3 Restoration - Hubs & Brakes - Part 70

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Dear All,
Its been a while since I have posted a video and I am sorry about that. I never stopped working on the Landy or videoing my work, but just haven't found the time to edit and upload the content. So you will notice the scene is nicely set for Easter (or thereabouts) and I promise to catch up with my uploads. There are a good few projects waiting to be aired.
My Instagram account is more up to date, so do have a look if you like: my911projects
I hope you enjoy the update and that my daily 'suffering' helps you diagnose or prevent any pending issues on your Series vehicle.
Daily driving the Landy is great fun, but a lot of work.
Regards
Joël

Oil grease mix can be breather. Take the banjo off and try and blow through it to check if pipe, a thread die into the hole will clear any gunk down into axle

Long time no see, Joel. I think the oil can migrate to the bearings in the rear axle, there’s no seal to prevent it happening. Make sure the axle breather isn’t blocked, that would tend to make the oil move more. Any multi-purpose/bearing grease should be fine for the wheel bearings. If the brake linings were contaminated by oil/grease, you should definitely replace them. The oil will have saturated the lining and, even if you clean the surface, it will come back to the surface when the brakes are operating and producing heat. The rear brake springs appear correct. The trailing shoe doesn’t have a spring at the top as it is pushed back in by the rotation of the drum. It will also explain the slight dragging when rotating the wheel backwards. With the drum on, adjust the snail adjusters until the drum locks, then back off so that is a slight drag when rotating the wheel. If you leave them fully backed off, you’ll have a long brake pedal.

The wheel bearing grease does get diluted with oil on the back axle, it's not an issue to the running of the vehicle and quite normal. Rear hub seals seem to be a frequent maintenance job on Land Rovers. Regarding the brake dragging, check the pins in the brake shoes - it's not unknown for them to pop out.

@@My911 Sticky, stinky grease usually has a high percentage of natural fats in it, it's not something I'm familiar with though. My wheel bearings just get general purpose lith/molly grease.

The hub nuts should have a lock washer between them that should make it impossible for them to come undone. Either you haven't got that washer, or you haven't bent over the tabs correctly on the washer. Graham

Did you replace the seals in the rear hubs? How come the bearings were so loose? Usually bearings don’t loosen themselves unless they wear then you would have metal shavings in the diff oil. Spring on top should go from show to shoe.

Hallo Joel, tolle hilfreiche videos - vielen Dank!

I always meant to ask, did you ever notice the wolf rims being heavier as opposed to the original rims? also, which parabolic are you running and how are you finding them? best

  • @My911

    @My911

Hi, haven’t noticed any weight difference but the Wolf rims are definitely thicker steel. Maybe the pepper pot holes evens the added weight. Hmm, the springs are a sensitive matter. I bought them from paddocks and they are definitely sub-standard products. I complained, got a new front set which had the same problem and complained again. But they ignored me the second time which was not cool. I recon I would go for the famous blue springs whose name I have forgotten. More money but they are handed (sided) which is important. Mine are the same both sides and do not even out the extra weight of the fuel tank, driver and transfers case. My Landy is therefore lop sided.

@@My911 thanks Joel. I had found some wolf rims with 500 mile tyres fitted on eBay for £125 a few weeks ago. I was going away for a week the day after and couldn’t be bothered for the 3.5 hour round trip in the landy that day. Regretted it ever since. I also haven’t had the best experience with parabolics. I bought a second hand “unfitted” set that bare the same markings as yours. They were flat the day I put them on... the blue ones you are referring to I believe are GB springs, but even with them I’ve heard some bad experiences, it’s more that swapping springs is an annoying job. Anyway great video as always!

@@My911 I read a lot about various springs and the horror stories. I ended up going for GME standard type leaf springs, made in Sheffield. Not too expensive and GME is a supplier for Morgan and Jaguar Land Rover. They are quite springy taking a bit of effort to get them on, but have a very nice smooth ride. They are also handed so the Landy sits level.

I’m catching up with your videos - so you may be way past this now ? But shoes definitely absorb oil - I’ve heard of people burning them to reuse them, but I think replacing them is normally required. On the back right - it looks like you might have the shoes on backwards? The friction material is closer to the cylinder on the back shoe - rather than the front shoe. They are handed so that the leading edge of the leading shoe contacts first and the friction supports the pistons moving out - if the trailing shoe touches first then the friction fights the piston coming out. I may not have seen it right on yours - nor describes it well…. But if you search for drum brake serve affect, you should find it explained.
