Land Rover Rock Sliders: The Dumb Way

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

I got some Discovery 2 sliders without tree bars, and simply added my own. It actually wasn't that simple, and it confirmed for me that trying to modify aftermarket parts instead of making your own is often more trouble than it's worth.
I did finally get to use my tubing bender and notcher, and of course the ol' TIG machine. Overall, not a bad way to spend a weekend.
Here are some links to some stuff in the video. An no, even with my massive following of ~600 subscribers, none of these are sponsored products. I just think it's helpful to know specifics sometimes.

They look great though. I'll have to try out that paint, thanks for the share. I'm going to add nerf bars to my sliders as well, but I'll be using square tube - I like the step stability of them. Tyler, watch that acetone, it absorbs into the blood stream very easily and it's a carcinogen - Wear them nitriles buddy!

Thanks! Glad you're enjoying it. There seems to be a shortage of Disco 1 content when compared to Disco 2, and I think representation matters.

@@tfrasca142 I agree mate! When I replaced all the wheel bearings and rotors, there were only 1 or 2 channels that had videos on the process. The same can be said for gearbox removal......

Great work! You have talent and skill. Thanks for sharing. I too have a D1 V8i. One day I may get something done to the side steps.

Thanks, I appreciate that. I actually forgot to mention how useful these sliders are as steps. Now I can actually reach the roof rack. Highly recommend it.

Thanks, Luc! I haven't had time to pull the diff apart yet, but it didn't sound too catastrophic, and both axles are still fine. I'll probably pull the third member and replace it with the one from the parts car, then rebuild the original with a locker.

@@tfrasca142Man I wish I was as mechanically inclined as you are. My father in law has a few old Land Rovers rotting on his property and wanted to give one to me (I think an old Discovery) but I simply don't have the time or knowledge to take on a fixer upper like that - heck my currently truck is new and just upgrading that is a lot of work (and money) for me - let a lone something older. 😅 My dad had an old Land Rover when I was kid and it broke down all the time - once I remember the sick shift completely broke while stuck in a swamp...ha ha. That as a shitty hike out but those memories will always live on. Would love to own a Land Rover one day. Keep the updates coming - love them.

@@lucacadianalbert Yeah, it seems like the best stories happen when things go sideways. But I totally understand not wanting to take on a project car. I technically have 3 of them, 4 if you count the parts Disco. It's a lot to keep up on.

From now on, your Disco would be more daring to tease the trees and rocks! It's really sad what happened to your diff-locker. Could you please better describe the circumstances that caused this malfunction? I too tried my own experiment like you for an HD rock-slider five months ago. it weighs 25kg each, the design of which remains quite particular. Don't hesitate to take a look if you have time.

Mostly just by trying stuff. A friend taught me the basics of TIG welding, but the rest has just been learning by doing.
