TOOL LIST & TIPS BELOW. In this video I show you a FULL SERVICE on my Land Rover Discovery 4 Diesel. I'm not a qualified mechanic but I enjoy looking after my cars and these videos are to show that you can maintain a Land Rover on your driveway with basic tools and minimal cost.
As always, if you have any questions or comments please leave them below and I'll get back to you asap.

OIL CHANGE:
PARTS:
The manufacturer recommends: Castrol EDGE Engine Oil - 5W-30, A3/B4. You'll need 5.9 litres for a service.
LR013148 - Cartridge Filter and O ring.
1013938 - Sump plug and washer.
TOOLS:
13mm, 15mm and 32mm SINGLE HEX socket and wrench or spanner. To remove the Steel engine protective plate (Bash plate) and Sump plug.
Flathead screwdriver or similar to pop out the filter and O-ring seal.
Oil extractor pump (mine is a 9ltr)
TIPS:
Don't forget some rags for cleaning drips and spills.
Best to have the vehicle on level ground. Cold engine. Start engine for 1 minute to churn the oil and turn off.
I'd left this too long and there was only 4.7 litres of oil in the engine! 🤠 Should be done every 6 months!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
AIR INTAKE PARTS:
PHE000112 - Air intake filter.
TOOLS:
Crosshead screwdriver.
Vacuum cleaner.
TIPS:
Be careful putting the screws back in as over tightening can strip the plastic!
I used a vacuum cleaner to remove the loose debris from the housing.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
FUEL DIESEL FILTER PARTS:
LR009705 - Diesel Filter
TOOLS:
10mm Socket and Wrench or Spanner.
TIPS:
Make sure the car is COLD, the filter is right next to the exhaust which can be HOT!
I missed the replacement O rings so had to do the job again!
On the second time, I over tightened the sensor and snapped it! Cost me around $100 from a local Land Rover service centre and a day in time. - WKW500080
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
CABIN FILTER PARTS:
LR023977 - Cabin / Pollen Carbon filter
TOOLS:
None.
TIPS:
Make sure you check the filter air flow direction. Arrows point DOWN!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
You'll probably need a beer too!

Hello mate, really useful video and looked like a real pain to film some of the work. Was just wondering why / if there is a need to change the sump plug if you can drain the oil with that pump? Is it so you can do a bit of a flush? Just seems a pain removing the bash plate. Don't want to cut corners but also want to avoid making the job more difficult for a novice like me.

Hi, another Land Rover discovery channel called LR Time, recommends using 5W40 synthetic oil instead of land Rover's recommendation of 5W30. The LR Time channel says that 5W30 oil is too thin an oil and offers poor engine protection.

Hi @ahmedzeidan6099, this was exactly what I was referring to in the video. I may consider changing to 5W40 next service! Thanks for watching

Something I always do is to write on the air filter the date and mileage it was replaced.

Mate, that's a brilliant idea! Keep them coming 😇. I've expanded my service log to a new notebook where I keep all receipts and part numbers I rip off the packaging stapled to the page with the date and mileage (KMs in Australia), like my own record. Old school but nice to have with the vehicle. Thanks again for watching!

Great video, just convinced me to give it a shot (instead of forking out $1000 for a mechanic), just curious, where did you buy the parts kit from, or did you buy them individually?

Hey mate! Sorry for the late reply. (we've been moving house). Are you in Oz? I got this kit at www.youtube.com/@klrautomotive3772 They're a good LR service house in NSW. This one is a NON OEM pack, but i found the parts really good and comparible to the OGs. klr.com.au/land-rover/discovery/discovery-4/spares-and-parts/filters-and-servicing/service-kit-discovery-4-3-0-tdv6/ Let me know if you need anything else 🤠

Hi, I'm definately NOT a mechanic so might be best to call your local garage. That said, if your D3 has an electronic handbrake (parking brake) it my have seized. I'd start there... Best of luck!

I'm in Victoria, Australia. What do you think the benefits of 5W40 over 5W30 are for us down here?

  • @andieconcarnie

    @andieconcarnie

It is a bit thicker once up to running temp. It needs to be a bit thicker as the Rod bearings are thinner than normal and the way the crankshaft oils the two outer sets of bearings. You notice a difference in the running note of the engine once started and the rattle goes faster running on 5w40 instead of 5w30.

@@andieconcarnie That's really interesting, my D4 has clocked 235,000KMs (around 146.000 miles) in a sub-tropical environment ( Victoria and NSW) is it an 'age' thing or has the Oil technology changed? Also is there a specific Oil? Like the Castrol says 5W30 'A3/B4', I find the whole engine oil marketplace a minefield. What do you use? Where are you in the world? Sorry that's lots of questions but i'm usually a 'by the book' person. Cheers, and genuinely Thanks for watching mate.

So nice to see a rust free chassis! Every time I get under the D4 over here in the UK I think “how long do you have left?”!! used to live in Oz and the one thing you knew you didn’t have to fight on the car was a rounded, rusty, seized bolt. Still putting 5w30 in my 170,000 miles D4.

@@richardwinder9608 Oh mate, I know, took me a while to realise why the cars over here don't rust like in the UK! We have the sea salt but you soon get used to washing the car off after a swim. What year / spec is your D4? Thanks for watching 🤠👨‍🔧
