Had a 53 plate and the only issue was the leaking sunroof and dated to plastics. Think these things have a real retro cool look and at some point the price is going to creep up

Things to check that were not mentioned Exhaust manifolds warp and the studs snap in the head Rear shock mounts are prone to rust Check the carpets as the windscreen seal can leak Make sure all the lights illuminate on the dash when you turn the ignition on Listen to the fuel pump prime, if it’s loud, it’s on its way out Fuel pressure regulator prone to leak Check power steering box, diff seals and transfer box for leaks That’s just a few from the top of my head lol

I'm actively looking at D2s for an overlanding build, but keep being put off by all the noise online about terrible reliability. What's your experience of them?

I have had a D2 and a Td5 defender and had no reliability issues. Saying that I did definitely buy well and feel fortunate for that. If you want one defiantly waiting for the right one to come up for sale.

Helpful video. I'm actively looking at D2s for an overlanding build, but keep getting put off by all the noise online about terrible reliability. What's your experience of the D2 from that perspective? Obviously they're an old car now, but here certainly seems to be a lot of people getting good fun out of them.

They are great for overlanding and have a lot of space, the big one to look out for is chassis a new one is £4k plus install they can be over £7.5k, the engines are cheap and relatively easy to install. I would look for rust any water in the cabin.

td5 gets quite a bit of hate but I cant knock them. my first disco had 400k miles on, second had 250k and my current has 180k. all worked flawlessly

Morning, May I ask what price would a D2 in this condition fetch ?

Hard to place now, I would say around £5k is a good price and reasonable. People are wanting much more than that at the moment

I'm in Vermont.....one of the most land Rover worthy states.....I've had a 96 discovery and a 92 range Rover county. I'm obsessed....I can't stop looking at these vehicles. I'm. Perplexed cuz I want one of these to be a "practical" vehicle here in the states but everything I hear is that they're too far out of reach......every blip and oil change is too far out of reach.....toooo expensive

Discovery 2 is one of the best, and probably worst, cars ever to come out of a factory. Anyone who previously has, or like me, still does own one, will know exactly what I am talking about. But at least they are repairable which is more than be said for later models.

I’ve had a couple and our current one is a 2001 which my father had from new and handed down to us around 2014. I’ve done all the maintenance myself since 80,000 onwards and I done a deal with Merlin Land Rover of Cardiff that we would take it away and put a marine primer on the chassis and then bring it back for them to waxoil.. best thing we did! As for the worst.. I strongly disagree with you, ours has been absolutely brilliant apart from the dreaded oil pump bolt going at 83,000 but apart from that it’s been spot on! It’s taken me up inside the artic circle on a wild camping trip with my family, it’s been to 15 different countries, used to pick both my boys up from hospital and my eldest passed his test in it with my youngest about to do the same next June. This is me being honest but it’s never needed any wheel bearings, still has the original steering knuckles on front axle, shocks are the originals, both gearbox’s the same but a seal was put in the transfer last year.. never had a door card off the interior and everything apart from a electric seat switch and the binnacle are original. 205,000 on her now and I trust it 100% and I’d happily use it now to tow my Ifor Williams down to Spain and back if needed… absolutely great car which does everything we a want from it. I think my father paid just over £30,000 and I can definitely say we have had are money out of it..

I love these vehicles…. Never owned one but many of my family has. They have had a bad press …. The old jokes about comparing them with Toyota LandCruisers. they rust like f*** as well. Ultimately there is a conundrum …. These are magic for “green-landing” …. As good as over-priced Defenders …. But when you buy one for “green-landing” you want one that has not been used for that before. Not a joke but “green-leaning” rots out the very things that make these magic. They were built to a price and for Disco 2 s, that price was cheap.
