Land Rover 3.5L Stage 1 V8 by Jerry

Welcome to my Land Rover stage 1 V8. A little walk around video and short drive for you, filmed in 2016. It is completely standard except for the parabolic suspension & wheels and has its original 3.5L V8 engine and LT95 gearbox.

I own a 1981 stage 1 thats completely original apart from truck cab conversion i did to it as the original full length hard top was a bit leaky and the heater couldn't cope in the winter, in the late ninetys i was forced to park it up in the corner of my front garden for a short while but the short while turned into about 14 years till i finally had to move it to get some work done on my house i wasnt optimistic but i chucked a half a gallon o fresh petrol in it and hooked up a crappy old battery i had lying around pulled the choke out and drove it out all done in less than 15 minutes. I decided it was time to get her back on the road but had to replace 2 outriggers that had rotted away (my own fault) weld the chassis up a bit and replace the tyres and a few other bits and pieces and shes now been back on the road for the last two or three years though i dont get to drive her much as my dogs wont go in it they prefer the comfort of my ranger, the landy has its original jack and starting handle and even as some service history and i still get optimists knocking on my door asking if i'd sell it for £500 i tell them all the same its not for sale but if they stick a nought on the end of the 500 I might think about it.

Real characters these machines with lots of foibles. That one Looks surprisingly good in white. And yes the Zenith carbs (specific to that engine). don't like the cold. There's a reason for this and you'll realise why in a second. And why the pre'heat gear is there for that specific purpose, and must never be removed! To prevent icing, they really struggle to start in cold weather also, if everything on the ignition or carbs isn't spot on, Ran mine on gas also, Which creates a whole world of issues on these. And all because the v8 engine in these vehicles has a lot lower compression ratio compared to other vehicles, making running on gas slightly awkward. They are a detuned engine similar to the other petrol engines in the range for that vehicle , for the purpose to create the option to run them on the lowest octaine fuel available. "(Which makes them) (susceptible to the cold)." ( Plus their no designed to run on today's high octaine fuels) ( I digress) Back in the day 2🌟 petrol or less if in real Dire Straits in the middle of back & beyond, with the timing adjusted to suit they will run on oil & petrol or diesel & petrol mixed, where no other fuel is available. This is one of the real secret success stories of the "series land rover" and why for decades no other vehicle could travel where they went. Sometimes it's the little things you don't see, that change the whole world around us, Real fun to drive & off road (Most going into military service abroad) Extremely capable dependable trucks if looked after. And if you like thunder & rattles With bags of charm & character for those of us who wish for something a little bit different, (that not many people know of,) Then this, which used to be & still are a real die hard enthusiasts vehicle, may just be the thing to put that smile on the face at the weekend. The perfect blending of a range rover & a series 109 Because that is exactly, precisely, what they are! Also owned & beloved by people such as Quentin Wilson who used to co-host the original Top gear. ( His I believe was green) I don't know if he still owns it? It may be worth finding out. Cheers

Nice motor. I had a Stage1 V8 pick up--It was a big mistake letting it go. Do you find you get problems with the carbs icing up? I had to replace the engine in mine, I put a V8 from a 110 in and didnt bother refitting all the inlet air preheating stuff then had problems on coldish damp days with the carbs iceing, especially after a good blast along a dual carriageway--it was OK until I stopped then it would cut out and wouldnt go again for about five minutes.
