Ultraviolence is so perfect, shades of cool is a true masterpiece

shades of cool is actually from another album of hers, Ultraviolence. this album is less about storytelling but more about the state of mind of a woman who struggles with drugs and addiction and is in relationship with probably an older man who's already married. it's basically written from the perspective of a depressed woman typically called as "the mistress" or "the other woman".

Well said, you can see that his fantasy is a young sexy girl, so the thought of her haunts him when she's not around. That's why she said he calls for me and not for you, referring to his wife or current lover.

My interpretation like everyone else is she's haunting him. He's older, she's the same age. And he's seeing her and imagining her everywhere. He has a guilty conscience

you were right! this is the video where she’s a ghost haunting him. this is from her second album, ultraviolence, which is a lot grittier/rock sounding than the songs you’ve listened to before. i’m excited for your reaction to ride which was on an ep that came out between born to die and ultraviolence. the music video is beautiful and it’s one of the first songs that really made me fall in love with her. anyways, great video and reaction! hope your day is going well :)

Ultraviolence has a very moody sound. It's not for everyone. So it's okay. It takes few listens to get it. That's why there are many fans who loves this album sooo much and many who thinks it overrated 😅

I'm really enjoying these! Shades of Cool is off of her second album, Ultraviolence, so as you noticed it is sonically a bit different to what you've heard from her first album. Ride comes from the Paradise EP between Born to Die and Ultraviolence, so it's great that you'll hear it before (hopefully) going into more songs off of Ultraviolence. Also, Ride happens to be my favorite music video of hers! Also, just a note about the lyrics and how you're looking at the storytelling-- If I were you, I would try to separate the lyrics a bit more from the videos in some cases. The videos are very much an artistic project that very appropriately suit the vibe of each song, but they can't always word-for-word match up with what you're seeing-- especially since she does write heavily from personal experiences and relationships, and (obviously) she didn't die in a car crash lol. I actually think this song fits in narratively quite well with other songs off of Ultraviolence, even if music video-wise it's more in line with the BTD videos.

I also need time with Ultraviolence. This song came from her sophomore album. But once you dive deep into her discography, this album would grow. I used to struggle listen to this album. But once I'm at Norman Fucking Rockwell era to Chemtrails Over The Country Club era, I suddenly miss the ultraviolence sound. I just listened Blue Banister album and it's so incredible. I never regret listen to her discography for months now and I almost finish it.

You should listen to the whole Born to Die album and then listen to the whole Ultraviolence album. They are two separate projects and so SO different. From the treatment of her songs, Ultraviolence uses her voice more as an instrument than the main part of the song. Also you should listen to Young & Beautiful, it's amazing.

Constructive Criticism: Dont read to much into interpretation of every single track towards Born To Die, Only her first “era” / album gravitates around it; you starting to unpack things way past her first album narrative. This song wasn’t even the first one to come out Ultraviolence, you have started with West Coast. Please do a little research in terms of which song or video you reacting belongs to what album. Lana is an artist that wether talking about the same topics thru her albums, she evolved step by step. Born To Die left a mark but did not control every aspect of the LPs to come after that. Also that ranking system even tho its interesting YOU HAVE to edit it towards the end, it feels such like a spoiler to have it at the beginning. Anyhow keep giving concept and ideas, its really nice to see what you come up with.

She is one of the few artists that has such a large body of work. And I love each of them for diff reasons & for diff moods…but out of her 100’s of songs, I can safely say that I love some way more than others, but she has only 2 songs that I really do not like. So I can pretty much play any of her albums from start to finish. No skips. NFR fav album of all time. No question

I think he's imagining her. Maybe now that he is old he can't help let lana go as he killed her. Even if Lana herself is not haunting her but her memories are. In the second part he looks at the pool and she comes out of pool (her ghost) (Remember blue jeans, he drowned her)
