LALLA MUSSA DAL
Preparation time 10-15 minutes
Cooking time 20-25 minutes
Serve 2-4
Ingredients
For Boiling Dal
3 cup Chana dal, soaked, चना दाल
1/2 cup Masoor dal, soaked, मसूर की दाल
1 cup Urad dal, soaked, उड़द दाल
4-5 cups Water, पानी
½ tsp Turmeric powder, हल्दी पाउडर
½ tsp Degi red chili powder, देगी लाल मिर्च पाउडर
Salt to taste, नमक स्वादअनुसार
For Masala
1 tsp Cumin seeds, जीरा
1 tbsp Black peppercorns, काली मिर्च के दाने
Salt to taste, नमक स्वादअनुसार
2 tsp Ghee, घी
For Tempering
2 tbsp Oil, तेल
2 tbsp Ghee, घी
2 medium Onion, chopped, प्याज़
4-5 Garlic cloves, chopped, लहसुन
2-3 tbsp Curd, beaten, दही
Boiled Dal, उबली हुई दाल
Salt to taste, नमक स्वादअनुसार
1 ½ tbsp Prepared Masala, तैयार किया हुआ मसाला
1 tbsp Coriander leaves, chopped, धनिया पत्ता
2-3 tbsp Ghee, घी (for Finishing)
For Garnish
Coriander sprig, धनिया पत्ता
Process
For Boiling Dal
In a pressure cooker, add chana dal, masoor dal, urad dal, water, turmeric powder, degi red chili powder and salt to taste.
Cover it with a lid and cook for 2-3 whistles or until the dal is cooked well.
Keep aside for further use.
For Masala
In a pan, add cumin seeds, black peppercorns, salt to taste, ghee and roast it well.
Transfer it to a grinder jar and grind into a fine paste.
Keep aside for further use.
For Tempering
In a handi or deep kadai, add oil, ghee, once it's hot, add onion and saute for 2-4 minutes on medium flame or until golden in color.
Add garlic cloves and saute it well. Add curd and cook well.
Add cooked dal and mix everything well. Add salt to taste.
With the help of a wooden spoon, mash the dal and let it cook on medium flame for 5-10 minutes or until thick.
Add prepared masala and mix well. Add coriander leaves, finish it with melted ghee and give it a boil.
Transfer it into a serving dish and garnish it with coriander sprig.
Serve hot with naan.
For Finishing
In a pan, add ghee once it's melted, keep aside for further use.

As a Pakistani, let me share with you guys, that in Pakistan this daal is like a legend. If you are traveling from Lahore to Islamabad through the Grand Trunk Road (where lala moosaa is located), stopping at Mian Jee's Dhabaa and having this Daal as a mid-journey meal is like a sort of traveling custom over here. And yes. It tastes, ammmmaaazing!!. Thank you so much Chef Ranveer for giving it the much-deserved recognition.

I am a vegetarian and tasted lots of variety of daal, and I made this recipe today, trust me I never had any daal like this. It turned out to be truly delicious and the best part is it has very less ingredients and so simple to make.
Lala Musa is a city near to Gujrat city of Pakistan in Punjab province mian ji restaurant is famous for mash daal and mixed daal it's favour is out of this world whenever we go to Gujrat we eat it with naan salad and raita it's also not very expensive as compared to it's taste

Yup, this daal was so popular in our neighbors home back in the 80s-90s. They were a Muslim fam. I make this dal a lot. They used to make safed urad dal as well. I try it too and it’s delish. One daal by itself that I’ll never like is Chana daal 😂

Hi again tonight…..tried this dal…added less ghee..but result is amazing…while eating added some fried onions, Julian ginger and a dash of lemon…tasted almost like haleem(off course minus chicken)..thank you once again 🙏🙏

In my family we prepare a similar type of (dal) recipe, last 3 to 4 generations with a combination of dhuli urad and chana dal and called that "kyuti daal" extremely delicious.. a thick daal cooked on low flame, flavoured with a balanced amount of adarak-lahsun-brishta -hing and generous amount of ghee..its heavenly delicious with any type of Indian chapati 👌😋👍

Ranveer Bhai yaar it's La-La Musa (not Lel'la Musa), When it comes to exquisite dishes and food items, there is no Parallel to the city of Lalamusa. Lalamusa’s Samoosa is known for its spicy and excellent taste. The barfi of Noona Halwai is most famous in Pakistan and near Lalamusa Daal of Mian-G Resturant is also a delicious dish to taste. People of Lalamusa are of very hospitable nature and live a simple life. Most people residing in Lalamusa are from lower middle class. People of Lalamusa in most cases have small self owned businesses or do manual labor. Land of Lalamusa is fertile and many people are also linked with agriculture sector as well. Also there are many people from Lalamusa who have settled in Europe and Middle East and contributing a good share in foreign remittance.

This dal..I have known and have been cooking since 6 years. This exact dal is cooked in Andhra Pradesh & Odisha border regions. The difference is they don't add dahi, use khada lehsun, and long dry chilli.

@@satishvennelakanti I learnt it 6 dals from my cook..she was from vijayanagaram. I can't remember names of dals. I can only speak rudimentary telugu.
दाल तो बनेगी बाद में उसका स्वाद तब पता चलेगा पर आपकी बातों और अदाओं से भरपूर मज़ा आ गया, अब जब खाएंगे तो सोने पे सुहागा। सच में 13-14 मिनट कब बीत गए, पता नही चला।
