Lakewood HV-4 Fan | Repairing the Broken Motor

Ойын-сауық

After many months of sitting around, the little Lakewood HV-4 finally got its turn at the repair shop. This fan was damaged in shipping, causing the rear bearing housing to crack and dislodge the motor. In the process, the blades were crushed and left the fan in an inoperable state. In this video, I diagnosed and repaired the fan, with a few hiccups along the way. Thanks for watching! There will be many more restoration videos coming soon.

Thanks Lemont! I was also happy to finally see it run. I think your fan is the same colour as mine, perhaps my lighting made it look a bit off, but it's the same blue-purple. Glad you enjoyed it! :)

I found another one of those in a black color at a Goodwill and it had the same problem where the motor fell off

Interesting to hear another identical problem! I’m guessing it’s the type of metal Lakewood used for the motor bearing housings. It’s a cheap pot metal or some kind of die cast zinc, and it doesn’t seem to hold up well over time.

Sorry, I personally don't have the CAD file of it. You could try designing one if you have access to a CAD software.

I used zip ties to hold the grill of my vintage super desk fan

Nice, have you tried using twist ties? Those might be more ideal for grilles since they can be reused.

It's probably similar if not the same fan, just in another colour. I believe the HV-4 was sold under a couple other brand names, including Hawaiian Breeze, though I'm not certain if those were true Lakewoods or very good knockoffs.

I know this question might sound silly, but is there nobody that sells bearing holders for small shaded pole motors like the one on this fan up in Canada? Almost every motor repair shop has them in stock since people here fix things so much. What are you gonna do with this fan by the way? I know your standards is way too high to keep a fan in this state?

Unfortunately nope, finding individual parts for motors is pretty much non-existent here. Heck, even finding a replacement motor unit is difficult. It's a throwaway society so there's hardly any "salvage and repair" mentality. I don't like that. It's a huge waste of resources and an unnecessary garbage production. I plan on keeping this little fan. I definitely won't try to find it a new home because the repair is so crude and unreliable lol. If I ever come across a fan or fan heater that has problems other than the motor, I'll do a motor transplant and hopefully give the HV-4 a good motor.

@Alexthefancollector Walker Agreed. It's not just fans, it's pretty much the same with all appliances. Companies today are so money-driven that they don't take quality and longevity into consideration. Even the best of the appliance manufacturers nowadays are always looking for ways to cut cost under the radar.

It’s insane how hard it is to find parts like these here. I was looking for new bearings for a 70’s Torcan box fan, and all the parts shops here only have ball bearings, and even then they’re mostly just ones for vehicles and industrial equipment

@TheSuperFanMan Sorry, English is not my first language. It is the part that goes in the center, goes around and moves the air, the one that was bent in your video. After I saw your video, I kept trying until it worked. I had to flatten the center of the part and push until it fit. I had to replace the back screws and clean it as well. Thanks for your video and for taking your time to respond. I am a 67 year old lady who likes to fix things around the house, following my brother's example. Thanks again. I will keep watching your videos to learn more. ❤❤
