Lakeside Classic: Bob Jane's 1971 Holden HQ Monaro GTS 350

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Yes, you are looking at my dream car, but brought up to early 1970's race-specifications.The General Motors Holden weapon of choice was the diminutive Torana at the time, so just a handful of Monaros were tasked with track work. The most famous of them was this very one.

A magnificent car. Restored to it's former glory by the late Des Wall, (Wall Racing). The car is currently for sale at Australian Muscle Car Sales for heaps. Great video, brought back some very fond memories.

Haha! Yes you really love the HQ! And you have good taste there: the coupe is really a great looker! For me, not being Aussie, it's rear feels like a mashup of various late 60s and early 70s cars, but I bet it is all original Australian design. ;) QOTD: Masaru Kubota's legendary 1982 Toyota Carina ST that entered the Paris Dakar rally, and unexpectedly won it's class. It wasn't about the power and speed back then: all that mattered was reliability... It still exists in his back garden (you have seen the video) but I would like to see it in real life!

The 1972 model HQ Holden Kingswood station wagon was our family car for about 12 years when we were growing up,it was only a 202 powered one with the trimatic automatic transmission, but it was a nicer car to drive than the Mitsubishi L300 van which replaced it only it was twice as thirsty as the van,the HQ Holden is my favourite Kingswood. In the Bathurst 1000 race, they preferred to race the LC-LJ Torana GTR XU1 with the worked 186 cubic inch engine & triple Weber carburettors as they performed well plus they outbraked & outhandled the Ford GTHO Falcon with the 351 cubic inch Cleveland V8 engine fitted around corners. Peter Brock raced a Torana fitted with a worked 202 cubic inch engine & triple Weber carbs as well. I'm surprised Ford didn't race the smaller bodied Cortina in that race because they were about the equivalent size of the later Torana & would've handled & braked just as good.

Awesome video of a drop-dead gorgeous Holden racer! Love the enthusiasm for that car! Which leads me to QOTD: my favorite racer is the Sunoco/ Penske 1968 Chevy Camaro. Beautiful car, great driver; plus my Dad had a 1968 Camaro when I was a little kid! Great video, take care Dan.

One race car I wish I had seen, is Richard Petty's number 3 Plymouth Superbird, known as The King. With that HQ Monaro, you see where Nissan got the inspiration for its Laurel coupe, the Butaketsu. And that design cue was also used on some Chevys, Buicks and Pontiacs of the same era, here in the States.

I wish I could see the Yatabe Speed Trial 2000GT, but sadly that car basically went missing and I heard it burned in a track accident, so definitely the Shelby-raced 2000GTs and the 1974 Safari-winning 510. Two cars that hold a special place in my heart. Oh and maybe the M3 GTR.
