I've lived on a lake in South Florida for more than 60 years. For the past two or three decades we've kept our swim areas clean without raking or cutting aquatic weeds - instead we use a tarp - it's really easy. If you are still pulling weeds, or even worse, staying out of the water because of the weeds, we've found a really simple solution. Cover the weeds with a sun-blocking tarp for about five or six weeks. When you remove the tarp, the weeds are gone! The most difficult part is getting a new tarp to sink, but with a few weights, like concrete blocks or pipes, you'll be able to sink the tarp and prevent it from sliding away. Don't leave the tarp in one place for too long or the weeds can grow on top of the tarp and you'll have a hard time moving it. When you move the tarp, you'll find the weeds are gone and there is a fine layer of silt remaining, but that quickly goes away. Mechanically removing weeds can often make the problem worse because when you pull the weeds you break them into many pieces, each of which for many species can root and grow into a new plant. My neighbors and I share our tarps and help each other move them every so often. The best tarps we've used are those that we got from fumigation companies that cover buildings to kill termites and they had old tarps that they were going to discard. We've even used the cheap blue tarps from Home Depot or Harbor Freight. Try it; you'll like it.

Wish we could do that here in Minnesota, but that is very much not allowed

I have a very small shoreline area at my family’s cottage that hasn’t seen any real maintenance since my papa was diagnosed with ALS a few years before he passed, and I’d like to take on the mantle and try to make our shore enjoyable again next year. Looks like we already have everything except the roller so that’s helpful to know! Maintaining the water with that powered water moving system might not be feasible for us but if my papa could consistently maintain the area with his own two hands then so can I!

Pretty cool video . I just had to jump in and mention the benefits of using a liquid pond fertilizer . It promotes the growth of plankton ONLY . Plankton blooms feed ALL the baby fish so everything grows super fast PLUS plankton blooms shade the pond bottom as well so weeds don't grow as well .

To keep the lake clean, it must be regularly cleaned of silt and algae. This can be done with a dirty water motor pump and a Bagermaster suction nozzle.

Dont the weeds prevent shoreline erosion?

Hey, thanks for the video. We have a hydro sweep that cleared out the muck, and revealed a HUGE amount of tree branches, from tiny to large. Do you have any advice on how to clear those out? It’s in a part of the water that not feasible to stand there and pull them out.

Glad you had success with the hydro sweep, great piece of equipment. Branches would be tough. Maybe an anchor would be able to grab onto them and pull them up?

The hydro sweep is the best defense against muck. It blows the sediment out of the area so it never has a chance to collect on the bottom. Fix the muck, and the leeches will be gone too. They don’t like nice sandy bottoms.

Would the Hydro Sweep work without the first two steps if you start early in the season before growth begins? I have no weeds now. Nothing to cut, but I know they're coming.

I sure would think so. In theory, if you can stop the growth to begin with then you’d never really have a need to cut out anything. Get that sweeper blowing!

Do you leave the HydroSweep running when you're not up at the cabin, so non-stop 24 / 7?

It’s programmable so you can run it however you’d like. Honestly, once you first install it and run it heavily for maybe a weekend, it takes very little to maintain the area. Physically cut out the weeds first, roll and try to get roots up next, hydro sweep heavily for a few days, enjoy weed free lake swimming area! Hydro sweep lightly for maintenance as required.

Where does 1 gets the device in step 2?

Does it work for weed grasses that have grown above the water line if allowed to sink before pulling???

Oh most definitely, it’s sharp as hell!

i have more of a muck issue , but some weeds . do you think raking and the hydrosweep would make a big difference ? my trolling motor moves it a good amount , but some areas have about 12 inches or more of muck . i would think just stirring up the muck with the motor on would help also ?

The hydro sweep is going to make the biggest difference with muck. Raking can help too but for continual bottom maintenance, the hydro sweep is going to keep it clear. Constantly blowing doesn’t allow new silt to settle and become muck either.

@@suburbanacreage but the issue at my lack is partially exacerbated BY the turning over of the silt. I am seriously confused. shallow lake with too much boat activity and high wakes near the dogs churn up this brown algae that decomposes and stinks. So 1. Stinking decomposing algae mats 2. Lots of turned up silt. This was a pristine oligotrophic lake only 10 years ago. All I want is the ability to clean up around the dock and have it look better in that local area. Advice?

Hydro sweep for sure will help. Remember that even high traffic areas are only busy certain times, like weekends during the day. The hydro sweep will be working 24/7 to clear debris away from your dock. Water clarity might suffer when boat traffic is high, but the sweeper will catch up eventually and win the battle through persistence. Good luck!

I think you’d need a different product. It would be difficult to judge whether it’s staying on the bottom of the lake while you’re pulling it. And it’s hard to judge how fast to go? I’m sure there are some products out there, but not these ones which are meant to be used by hand.

Triangle out of unastrute then all thread thought it around 16 " long. I added another peace of strut on the back for a sec row of all thread, also gives you a place to put a couple cinder blocks.

I use the Hydro Sweep in step 3 to maintain the area once I cut out the weeds with the razor in step 1. If you didn’t do any maintenance, I’d still think it would take awhile for the weeds to grow back and become a problem. You’d probably have to cut them out monthly or so. You mention canal so I’m guessing you’re trying to get boats through, not maintain a swim area. That should be less work and the razor should work awesome.

@@suburbanacreage yes just for boats. Lilly pads are drifting in bad. IV cleaned the out with a garden rake. But the weeds are coming up now. I am going to get the razor. Last year I borrowed a neighbor's sump and put a 6 ft water hose on it for circulation. And ambience. Mine is an airbnb.

For sure Richard! My goal is to only clear the area around the dock for the purpose of recreation. This is a chemical free, mechanical weed removal process and I try to leave plenty of cover for the fish/wildlife.

I would think this gizmo would hang up on limbs, rocks, etc. Has anyone had problems with that?

You know in Malaysia they sell this type weed..myve you can sell it online or to other country..

My goal is always to maintain the dock area only. Keep it clear for the boat to get in and out and for the kids to be in the water. Anything that isn’t in close proximity to the dock stays as natural habitat for fish and wildlife. All mechanical methods used in this video too, so no herbicides into the lake. I have spent the last hour watching videos and no one mention if they hit a rock or a log. How does that work? We have a 7 acre lake, but I would be clearing about 1 acre of it. BUT, I know there are logs at the bottom...Should I worry if I buy this? Thanks!

I wouldn’t be too worried about logs or rocks. I mean yeah it’s not ideal, but most of the time the tool will find its way over an object. Most of the logs are broken branches that have fallen in and sunk meaning if you did happen to snag one, you’d probably be able to pull it up and grab it and remove it, added bonus! That’s a big area to clear and it’ll be a ton of work. It’ll be tempting to hop in a boat and troll the blade around but you really want to give it time to sink, then quickly yank it to get the cutting action. Trolling it around will never allow it to settle on the bottom. I have links of the exact tools I’m using in the video description if you need them.

@@suburbanacreage THANK YOU SO much for taking time to reply. I did end up buying the tool and it does work very well. I am 55 yo and was able to toss it somewhat easily. Yes, our lake is private with 8 owners and the dam owner bought it the same day! ha So, he has a motorized boat (no gas allowed on lake) and we have one peddle boat and two kayaks, so he will help us get the rest that I cannot do from the shore. Yes, snagged a few small logs, but dragged them to the shore. I am making sure I don't ruin the blades. SUBSCRIBED! Thank you again. We do have an old lake rake that was left here from previous owner (been here 5 yrs) and I want a lighter one.

@sheripresloid7839 I’m glad it’s working out for you. I would seriously consider step 3, the blower, for general maintenance. It’s a big expense up front, but man do they keep weeds to a minimum. Doing weed work with the blade is hard work, kinda fun, but tough. The blower runs off a program and you don’t have to do anything. You need power at your dock though so not a solution for everyone. I hope you have a great summer and enjoy the heck out of that lake!

It's not attractive to look at, but does make the water healthy.

I’d encourage anybody to only clear the area they will use for swimming. No reason to decimate all aquatic vegetation, leave as much of the ecosystem in the lake untouched as possible.

I see you have a Electric Weed Roller. That doesn't keep the weeds out by it's self?

It’s actually a blower and that’s step 3, I have it linked in the video description if you want more information about blowers and how they work. I find that they work best as a “maintenance” step to keep the area clear of weeds rather than getting rid of the weeds themselves. Cutting out existing growth through mechanical methods first, razor and roller in steps 1&2, is the fastest way I have found to get results. The blower by itself will make the water undesirable for future Weed growth, and maybe over time the existing weeds will die off, but cutting them out first and then using the blower to prevent future growth is my preferred method.

Hey Chris, thanks for the comment. No, my methods are mechanical vs chemical. I haven’t felt the need to go the herbicide route and my thoughts are always if I can avoid chemical intervention AND get the desired results, that’s always best.

I liked it better before, the aquatic plants looked beautiful!

Weed cleans water, really! Offcourse to much plants, are bad for swiming.

You could but it might not work as well. To be most effective the retrieval is a series of pulls followed by brief pauses to let it sink again. You want it dragging across the bottom to cut out the most weeds. Trolling it behind a watercraft will be a constant pull so it won’t get down close to the bottom. Also you want a quick fast yank to get it to cut. Slowly dragging through the weeds won’t cut as well.

My goal is always to be as least intrusive as possible and I think a small recreation area can be created while maintaining the majority of the eco system for fish and wildlife.

That is sort of like mowing a lawn. How do you get the weeds from growing at all? Is it not a question of getting the right weeds to grow to keep the water clear? It should be like a self contained microcosm that takes care of itself. You would treat a fish tank in the same way. I believe in self sustainability. It is ok to skim the duckweed off the top from time to time. Maybe in a pond you can have fish that eat the duckweed but not the bottom plants. It is all sort of a question of balance.

The hydro sweep blows water and creates a slight current or turbulence. Weeds love stagnant water that doesn’t move much and by adding the blower you create an environment that is harder for them to grow in. It’s similar to how a fountain in a pond can help keep it clear of algae.

Does one need a permit from the DNR to run the Hydro Sweep?

We didn’t get a permit but the DNR did notice the addition to the dock and left a note. It’s a family cabin so nobody was there when they stopped but after calling them about it they just wanted to make sure we understood the correct operation. It can’t sit on the lake bottom , it has to be up a bit. You also can’t shoot it directly downwards. They are perfectly legal when used correctly and the DNR won’t give you any problems.

Manual removal of aquatic weeds is permitted for recreational use (swim areas or getting boats in and out of docks). Automated removal (step 3 in the video) requires a permit that we have. DNR is pretty chill, they don’t want you significantly altering the bottom of the lake. Here’s a link for Minnesota if you want more info www.dnr.state.mn.us/shorelandmgmt/apg/regulations.html

They totally are but you have to set it up correctly. The issue comes in when owners drop them all the way to bottom and point them downwards. When you start changing the bottom of the lake, dredging, that’s what isn’t allowed. They have inspected ours and we had a conversation about proper use.

My weed free sandy bottom swim area, evidenced at the end of the video, suggests otherwise. In my experience, the weeds float to the surface after being cut and I then collect the trimmings. I tried that due to the cost of the hydro sweep and it really didn't work that well. We are now budgeting to get the hydro sweep. I think it's the tube around the prop that makes a huge difference. Also like the fact that you can program it. With the trolling motor I had to be out there to baby sit it. But for a $100 used trolling motor off of marketplace it was worth a shot.

step 1 get a tractor with a logging winsh , step 2 get a anchor and some big old chain step 3 throw the anchor onto the beach , step 4 get the chain with a boat out in a big loop step 5 pull the chain til the loop is completely out of the whater with a big ball of weeds on it step 6 collect floating weeds repeat twice step 19 Profit from clean whater and weedless bathing spot

Sharp razor blade, sharp metal teeth…both seem like tools that need to be respected. The T Weeder is similar to the roller I use in step 2 in that it uses serrated teeth to pull out roots. It looks like a good tool though, thanks for the recommendation.

If you have a lake place you’ve probably had problems with mice at some point. I have a method for staying mouse free that doesn’t involve traps, chemicals, or killing mice at all. Where is “here”? Every state is different obviously and I’m just some guy on the internet that can’t keep up with laws in places I don’t live, BUT, everything I showed in the video is legal in Minnesota. Step 3, the automated blower, is the only thing that requires a permit and we did get one.
