Lairig Ghru | A Cairngorms MTB Route in the Highlands of Scotland

A short MTB adventure loop taking in the Lairig Ghru in Aviemore, Cairngorms. This gem of a descent lies just near Aviemore in the Cairngorms National Park in the Scottish Highlands.
Normally when I head to Aviemore I ride the trails in High Burnside however this time I decided to make a point of doing a route I had wanted to do for a while. This is the Lairig Ghru.
I rode a few trails at Badaguish and Glenmore before heading along to the singletrack at the side of Loch Morlich. From there I went along to the Rothiemurchus lodge and up to the start of the Lairig Ghru descent which is marked on Trailforks. I was racing against time with the weather but luckily made it!
The descent was fast with lots of small roots and some random rocks scattered down the trail. Nothing too technical so one for many abilities while still interesting enough for anyone who wants to see how fast they can ride it. The lower section didn't have as much on it and was again, just quick! Views were great, as they always are in the Cairngorms and there was a lot of lovely purple heather around too.
The loop didn't take too long - probably a couple of hours if you're starting from the base of Loch Morlich. It was a little longer for me coming from the Glenmore side so you can either do it as a short loop or link in some of the trails from Badaguish and Glenmore for a fuller day out. I did this in 1995 on a hardtail GT Tequesta. It was a brilliant trail. Fab memories.

It’s a good one and nice that you get an adventure without it needing to be a full day out. I enjoyed linking it with some shorter trails for a good mixture. Worth doing :) thanks!

Same! Wanted to do it for years and finally made it happen. It’s a nice one worth doing when up there
Always a must do trail on any visit to that area. It can be made into a good loop if you hike a bike up through the Chalamain Gap then a stupid steep tech descent down into the Lairig Ghru then down the the descent in this clip.

Thanks! It was fun. Ah I can’t remember too well but I reckon I was about 4 hours for the full route with the trails at glenmore too. That was a chilled pace with stops though. Not too long for the lairg ghru part on its own, maybe a couple 👍

Yeah! I had heard so much about it for years and have been in Aviemore loads but never rode it until this summer. Feels like a wee adventure yet not too far from everything else there :) totally!!
I was totally underwhelmed when I did it. Maybe I was expecting too much..? Was pretty greasy also. Night be one to try again another time.

I know what you mean - when I first heard about it I thought it would be a really rocky techy descent all the way down but then I saw a video of it and realised it was a bit more mellow so that helped with my expectations going in. I really enjoyed it as a fast trail to add on to some of the natural techier stuff around aviemore :)

@@LauraJaneWeeTamMTB yeah that's very similar to how I felt I think. Plus, we ended up trying to do more of the route which was only semi rideable and ended up with me exploding a chain. So maybe I wasn't in the best mood! 🤣

Ouch 😂 mechanicals can definitely have an impact haha. Yeah I’d heard the bit further up was unrideable in a lot of places so just stuck to this lower bit. Well enjoy if you do head up another time to try it but def worth doing some other techy stuff too with it :)
